Minnesota Fatty Acid Oxidation Disorders (FAOD)
and Organic Acidemia (OA)
Family Group
Fatty acid oxidation disorders (FAOD) is a group
of rare conditions that affect the way the body
breaks down fat for energy.
Organic acid disorders (OA) is a group of rare
conditions that affect the way the body breaks
down parts of protein and can lead to the buildup of harmful substances in the body.
There are many types of inherited (genetic) FAOD and OA conditions. Raising a
child with an FAOD or OA or having a FAOD or OA yourself can be challenging. It
can help to connect with others who understand and share these conditions.
The Minnesota Department of Health
supports the parent-led Family Group to:
•Support families of children with
with FAOD and/or OA
•Provide a way for families to meet
and connect with other families
•Share information and resources
about FAOD and OA

The MN FAOD/OA Family Group meets throughout the year.
Families connect, share experiences and get to know each
other at all meetings. Some meetings also have an
educational focus on topics of interest to families.
Parents or adults with an FAOD/OA can also can also
connect through the Minnesota Department of Health’s
private Facebook group.
