Renovating a home built before 1978?
Only one teaspoon of dust from renovation spread inside
an entire house can cause a child to become lead poisoned.
Contractors and Landlords:
The Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule is being enforced, and
applies to anyone who is paid to do work that disturbs paint in
housing, day cares, or schools built before 1978.
To comply:
• You must certify both your company and yourself or another worker
• Distribute the “Lead-Safe Certified Guide to Renovate Right”
to both property owners and tenants before starting work
• Contain the work area and clean up thoroughly
• Don’t use prohibited methods to remove paint
• Learn the rules at: www.epa.gov/lead
Not complying can cost you up to $37,500 per day, per violation.
Homeowners:
To hire an EPA-certified contractor:
• The list of contractors is available at: www.epa.gov/lead
To do the work yourself:
• Cover the ground or floor around the work area with plastic
• Contain and minimize dust by using water when scraping or sanding
• Do not use power tools to remove paint
• Clean up the work area with plenty of water
