Mandarin Language and Chinese Culture - Stage 3
20 weekly meetings, 1.5 hours each
A course for those who have recently completed an Elementary or Stage 2 class
and feel confident enough to speak at a basic level. You must be able to read some
simple Chinese. It aims to build on the knowledge of basic language structures and
functions allowing you to express yourself more freely in everyday situations.
The course aims not only to develop learners’ reading skills but also communication
in Chinese at a higher level. You will be reading more complex materials in Chinese.
A course book is used along with other authentic supplementary reading materials,
which may be from Chinese newspapers and public displays or notices you might
see in China if you travelled there. These materials will enhance familiarity with
different genres in Chinese.
The syllabus will aim to cover the following topics and language structures in
addition to the revision and consolidation of those in earlier courses.

Transport and traffic • regions • state and result of works • current
affairs • social problems • Chinese industries and business
market • International travel.
Grammar
and
functions:
Giving an opinion/expressing feelings • Language usage of 的、
得、了、过、给、离、呢• Time words, adverb and a complement
locate in a sentence • Continue tense (present, past and future) •
Expression of one hand… and another hand…; as well as…;
from … to… • subjunctive forms • Format of simple note, personal
letter and business correspondence •
Certificate of Completion
At the end of the course you will receive an individual Record of Learning on
request, giving details of the course and your achievement of the aims and
objectives. If the tutor considers that you have gained as much as possible from the
course, have achieved the learning outcomes and have participated in the assessed
activities, a Certificate of Completion of the course will subsequently be issued, on
request.
