Processing Academic Action
Academic action follows the rules put forth in the RIT Grades policy (D 5.0). Based on term GPA, a
student can be in good standing or be placed on Academic Probation or Academic Suspension. Once the
grading period concludes students will receive a system-generated academic standing status based on
the following rules:

Academic departments will receive a report from the Registrar’s office of all students who are not in
good standing once academic standing statuses have been generated. This report will include all
pertinent information about the student including the resulting action. Departments must review the
status for all students on the report. If the primary academic department determines that an academic
standing status should be changed, they may select from the values below:

Important Notes
1. All undergraduate students with a Pending Action (PA) must be reviewed and given a status by
the primary academic department. Pending action is placed on students whose cumulative GPA
falls below the acceptable threshold (2.0).
2. For any student being suspended or receiving a suspension waiver, a suspension/suspension
waiver form must be submitted to the registrar’s office.
Reports
A schedule for reporting will be released to departments each term. For fall term, the schedule is
below:
1. Academic units will be given initial academic action reports on Monday, November 19th.
2. Students on the report should be reviewed and decisions noted on the report – either confirm
the action or request a change.
3. A copy of the initial reports should be returned to the registrar’s office – with as much
information completed as possible – by Tuesday, November 20th @ 12pm. The Registrar’s office
will use the information on this report to make any necessary changes to the student’s academic
action.
4. On Wednesday morning, November 21st, a 2nd report will be issued to academic units indicating
anyone who has not been confirmed and adding any student who has had grades posted that
puts them in danger of academic action.
5. The 2nd report is due back to the Registrar’s office by 12pm on Wednesday, November 21st.
6. On Monday, November 26th, a final report will be issued to departments confirming all
academic actions for the Fall quarter.
Remember that departments must confirm or note changes to the academic standing status for each
student on the report.
The Registrar’s office is responsible for updating final academic standings in the Student Information
System.
