Today’s Game
A pair of unbeaten programs clash this
evening at Williams Stadium, as Liberty closes
out a two-game, early season homestand
by welcoming Glenville State to Lynchburg.
Both programs are coming off defensively
dominated season-opening victories. The
Flames scored early and often in a 49-10
victory over North Greenville last week, while
the Pioneers held Lock Haven scoreless in a
30-0 road victory.
Perfect against the Pioneers
The Flames will be looking to make it four
in a row against Glenville State on Saturday, as
Liberty is unbeaten in three previous meetings
with the Pioneers. In all three games, Liberty
has held Glenville State to a single touchdown,
including their last meeting when the Flames
posted a 31-7 victory on Sept. 9, 2006. The
series began with back-to-back meetings in
1997 (W/ 56-7) and 1998 (W/ 21-7), with all
three games taking place at Williams Stadium.
Home Sweet Home
The Flames welcome visitors Glenville
State to Williams Stadium today, a facility
Liberty has called home for the past 20
seasons. Liberty rallied for a 37-19 victory
over Towson State on Oct. 21, 1989, and has
won 64 percent of its contests since, having
posted a 67-37 record at the on-campus
facility. Last year, the Flames went undefeated
at home for the second time in program
history, posting a school-record 6-0 record en
route to their Big South title run.

Coach’s Corner
In just two seasons at Liberty, head coach
Danny Rocco has taken the Flames from 1-10
(in 2005) to Big South champions. The thirdyear skipper has posted a 15-8 record since
taking over the program, helping him garner
Big South Coach of the Year honors in back-toback seasons. Last year, the Flames were 8-3
and a perfect 4-0 against Big South foes. The
Pioneers’ Alan Fiddler has also established
a solid program at Glenville State in a short
period of time, posting a 26-19 record as he
begins his fifth season. Fiddler has won more
games at Glenville State in his first four years
than any other coach in program history.
Squeeze On In
The preseason buzz about Liberty’s year
of “Unfinished Business” motivated a near
record-setting crowd to assemble at Williams
Stadium on Saturday, as 15,311 fans saw
Liberty defeat North Greenville, 49-10. The
attendance figure was the second highest in
program history, ranking only behind Liberty’s
Homecoming crowd of 15,631 against William
& Mary on Oct. 14, 2006.
Still Streaking
Liberty pushed its home winning streak
to nine-straight games last weekend with
its 49-10 victory over North Greenville. The
longest home winning streak in program
history is also the nation’s current best FCS
home winning streak. Liberty is currently
tied with Dayton for the best home victories
run, as both programs have captured nineconsecutive home wins.

Oh Those Openers
For the sixth season in a row, the Flames
opened their home schedule with a victory,
defeating visiting North Greenville, 49-10,
last Saturday night. With the 39-point victory,
Liberty has now won 20 out of its last 22
home openers. Overall in the 35-year history
of the Flames’ football program, Liberty has
posted a 22-13-1 record in its first home
contest of the season, including an 18-2 mark
since moving to Williams Stadium (first home
opener was in 1990).
Sensational Six
Not only has Liberty reeled off ninestraight home victories, but the Flames
have won six-straight games dating back to
last season. The run currently ranks third in
program history, as well as third nationally in
current winning streak among FCS programs.
The last time Liberty won six games in a row
was over the 1992 and 1993 seasons.
Plentiful Points
Liberty’s offense seemed to pick up right
where it left off in 2007, rolling up 49 points in
a victory over North Greenville last weekend.
The figure was the seventh most points scored
last weekend by any FCS program. Last year,
Liberty surpassed its previous program record
by over 100 points scored (469), finishing the
year ranked No. 3 nationally by averaging
42.6 points scored per game. Following the
first weekend of the year, Liberty ranked No.
7 nationally in scoring average, as they scored
49 points in their season opener.
Jennings Joins Nation’s Elite
Last week, senior Rashad Jennings was
named to the Walter Payton Award preseason
watch list, marking a first in program history.
The award, often called the Heisman Trophy
for FCS football, is given annually to the
nation’s best offensive FCS player. Jennings
was one of seven running backs named to the
16-player list, along with six quarterbacks and
three wide receivers.
Terrell Still on a Tear
Despite being moved to a predominately
wide receiver type position during the
offseason, Zach Terrell still found a way to
continue his amazing stretch. The senior has
recorded a rushing touchdown in 17-straight
games, extending the streak with a 15-yard
scoring burst in the first quarter against
North Greenville. Terrell currently ranks No.
5 in Big South history with 27 career rushing
touchdowns.
Near Perfect Passing
Brock Smith completed 14-of-17 pass
attempts against North Greenville last
Saturday night, passing for 171 yards and two
touchdowns. His 82.4 competition percentage
was the best mark of his career at Liberty,
while his 205.67 passing efficiency rating was
the second best among FCS quarterbacks
during the first weekend of college football
this season.
The Big South’s Best
Jonathan Crawford was named Big South
Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday,
after the senior returned a kickoff 76 yards
for a touchdown against North Greenville.
Crawford helped carry on a recent Liberty
tradition, as the Flames won six out of 12
Big South weekly special teams awards in
2007, including the first three weeks of the
campaign.
Big Day for Brown
Chad Brown had a career high against
North Greenville, leading the Flames
defensive efforts with seven tackles. The
inside linebacker finished the contest with two
solo stops and five assisted tackles, including
a solo tackle for a five-yard loss. Last year, the
sophomore finished his rookie campaign with
eight tackles in seven games of action.
Saturday Night Lights
Under head coach Danny Rocco, the
Flames are 7-3 in night games. Since 1976,
Liberty has compiled a 49-65-3 in night games.
In Broad Daylight
Under head coach Danny Rocco, the
Flames are 7-5 in games played during the
day. Since 1976, Liberty is 111-112-1 in day
games.
Natural Versus Artificial Surfaces
Under head coach Danny Rocco, the
Flames are 11-6 on artificial turf and 3-2 on
natural grass. Overall, Liberty is 95-107-4 on
natural grass and 71-74 on artificial turf. The
Flames play their home games at Williams
Stadium, which has an artificial surface, as
new state-of-the-art FieldTurf was installed
prior to the start of the 2006 season. Liberty
has posted a 11-2 record at home since the
new surface was installed.

Overtime Update
The Flames enter today’s game having
posted a 3-5 record in overtime games.
Liberty’s last overtime game came on Sept.
15, 2007, when the Flames dropped a
48-41 decision to William & Mary in double
overtime in Williamsburg, Va.
Liberty has only played two of its eight
overtime games away from Williams Stadium.
Liberty’s first extra-period game was a 34-28
road lost to Morgan State on Sept. 21, 1996.
Liberty’s last victory in an overtime contest
came on Nov. 22, 2003, when it closed out the
2003 campaign with a 49-42 win over Hofstra.
Raising Up No. 71
Prior to the start of the Flames’ contest
against Tusculum on Sept. 1, 2007, Liberty
ceremonially honored founder Dr. Jerry
Falwell, who passed away the previous
May, by starting a new game day tradition.
Members of the University Police force raised
a No. 71 flag underneath the Liberty Flames
flag above the South end zone, just prior to
the team taking the field, bringing the 14,925
fans in attendance to their feet.
The new tradition has become a
permanent part of the Flames’ pregame
ceremonies at all home football games. A
different person/group will receive the honor
of raising the flag at each game. Today’s
honoree is Josh McDougal, Liberty’s former
cross country/track and field standout and the
2007 NCAA Cross Country National champion.

league record. Liberty was the fifth program in
league history to finish a conference campaign
undefeated, winning its Big South games by
more than 30 points per game (47.8 average
points scored to 17.0 average points allowed).
At the Top Again
For the second year in a row, the Flames
were named the preseason favorites to hoist
the Big South trophy at the end of the season.
Liberty garnered 12 out of 13 first-place votes
in the annual Big South coaches and media
preseason poll and finished 19 points ahead
of second-place Coastal Carolina in total
votes.
Record-Setting Crowds
For the second-straight year, the Flames
shattered attendance records in 2007. After
packing 66,765 fans into Williams Stadium
in 2006, the Flames drew in nearly 20,000
more spectators last season. In 2007, Liberty
finished the year with a program-best 85,140
screaming fans watching Liberty claim it firstever Big South title. Liberty averaged 14,190
fans per home game, allowing the Flames to
finish the year ranked No. 6 nationally in filling
stadium capacity (118.25 percent).
Following the first weekend of the
season, Liberty ranks No. 2 nationally in filling
stadium capacity (127.59 percent), while the
Flames’ victory over North Greenville was the
fifth highest attended FCS home game in the
nation (15,311).
Wonderful Wins
Last season, the Flames captured their
first-ever Big South title by posting a perfect
4-0 record in league play. Overall, Liberty
finished the season with an 8-3 record,
marking the fifth time in program history the

Making the Most of the Chances
With the new game timing changes the
NCAA is implementing this year, experts say
a typical game could be shortened by 10-12
total plays. Well, as long as Liberty follows its
pattern of success from last year, the Flames
shouldn’t have a problem. In 2007, Liberty
set a program record for average yards per
play (6.8). The previous school record was 6.5
average yards per play, set in 1997. Against
North Greenville last Saturday, the Flames
averaged 7.7 average yards per play, posting
440 yards of total offense over 57 plays.
Piling on the Points
The Flames finished the 2007 season
ranked No. 3 nationally in scoring average,
putting up an average of 42.6 points per
game. The figure was the highest in both
school and Big South Conference history.
Liberty’s previous record for points scored
was 356 set by the 1997 squad, who finished
the year with a 9-2 record. Following the first
weekend of action this year, Liberty currently
ranks No. 7 nationally after scoring 49 points
against North Greenville.
Better and Better
Although Liberty’s offense took most
of the limelight in 2007, the Flames defense
also did a number on opponents. The Flames
finished the year ranked No. 24 nationally in
rushing defense by allowing 128.5 average
rushing yards per game. The Flames set a
new school record by holding opponents to
1,413 total rushing yards, besting the previous
year’s team by 20 yards (1,433 yards allowed
in 2006). Liberty surrendered only 69 team
rushing yards against North Greenville last
Saturday, placing the Flames No. 18 nationally
in rushing defense.
Taking Care of the Ball
Since Coach Danny Rocco arrived at
Liberty, the Flames have taken great pride
in taking care of the football. Last year, the
Flames ranked No. 7 nationally in turnovers
per game (1.27), by giving the ball away on
seven interceptions and nine fumbles lost. In
2006, the Flames set a new program record
by committing 14 turnovers (6 fumbles and 8
interceptions), finishing the year tied for No.
20 nationally in giveaways. Liberty committed
two turnovers in its season opener against
North Greenville, fumbling the ball away
twice.
Protecting the Passer
The Flames set a new program standard
in 2007, allowing only eight quarterbacks
sacks during Liberty’s 11-game schedule. The
previous school record was nine quarterback
sacks allowed in 2004. Only three other FCS
programs nationally allowed fewer total
sacks, as Davidson allowed seven and James
Madison and Samford finished tied for the
national lead with six sacks allowed. Liberty’s
revamped offensive line struggled in its first
outing of the year, allowing quarterback Brock
Smith to be sacked three times in its season
opener against North Greenville.
Coaches on the Field
At halftime of the Flames’ annual Spring
Football Game on April 19, head coach Danny
Rocco tabbed six players for leadership
roles in 2008, when the skipper named his
team captains. Quarterback Brock Smith,
running back Rashad Jennings and center
Mike Godsil were named offensive team
captains. Defensively, nose guard Colin Dugan,
linebacker Nick Hursky and defensive back
Ryan Greiser were recognized as this year’s
defensive team captains.
The League’s Elite
Rashad Jennings was tabbed the Big
South Preseason Offensive Player of the Year
at the conference’s annual media day on July
25. Jennings, last year’s Big South Offensive
Player of the Year, set new Big South records
in rushing touchdowns (15), all-purpose yards
(154.3 per game), total touchdowns scored
(17) and points scored (104). Jennings, along
with seven other Flames, was named to the
Big South’s preseason all-conference team,
giving Liberty more preseason selects than
any other program in the conference this year.
Duo Grabs All-America Honors
Rashad Jennings and Dominic Bolden
were named to the Sports Network’s
Preseason All-America teams on Aug. 22.
Jennings grabbed first-team honors as
the nation’s premium FCS running back,
while Bolden was recognized for his stellar
return abilities as a third-team honoree at
kickoff return specialist. Both Jennings and
Bolden were named to the Sports Network’s
honorable-mention All-America squad at their
respective positions at the end of the 2007
campaign.

The 2-0 Tradition
Liberty will be looking to make it threein-a-row on Saturday night against Glenville
State, as a Flames victory would raise Liberty’s
record to 2-0. During the first two seasons
under head coach Danny Rocco, the Flames
started both years by winning their first two
contests. Liberty defeated St. Paul’s (27-0) and
Glenville State (31-7) in 2006, while downing
Tusculum (38-14) and Shippensburg (35-14)
last year.
Been There Before
With the United States’ eastern coast
being in the heart of hurricane season,
weather forecasts are predicting portions of
current Hurricane Hanna to be lingering in the
area come game time against Glenville State
on Saturday. Liberty is no stranger to severe
inclement weather of late, as the Flames
opened up the Danny Rocco era of football
on Aug. 31, 2006, under the remnants of
Hurricane Ernesto. The Flames dominated the
rain-soaked game, winning 27-0 in front of
8,546 faithful fans.
Twice as Nice
Rashad Jennings finished the North
Greenville game with 100 rushing yards and
two rushing touchdowns. The pair of scores
gave the senior 10 career games with two or
more rushing touchdowns, including six out of
his last seven games.
King of the Kickoffs
Liberty only returned three kickoffs
against North Greenville last Saturday night,
but the Flames certainly made the most of
their limited opportunities. Liberty returned
the trio of kicks for a total of 122 yards, aided
by Jonathan Crawford’s 76-yard return for
a touchdown. Liberty’s 40.67 kickoff return
average has the Flames leading the nation
after the first weekend of competition. Last
year, Liberty finished the year ranked No. 10 in
the nation, averaging 23.66 yards per kickoff
return.
Rushing into the Top 10
With his 13th career 100-yard rushing
performance this past weekend against North
Greenville, senior Rashad Jennings moved
into the nation’s Top 10 for active players with
100-yard rushing games. Jennings is tied for
No. 8 along with Appalachian State’s Armonti
Edwards. Liberty’s Big South foe Coastal
Carolina will be facing the nation’s leader in
the statistical category, as the Chanticleers
will welcome Colgate’s Jordan Scott and his 24
career 100-yard games this weekend to Brooks
Stadium in Conway, S.C.
Big Boys in the Big South
Liberty’s Rashad Jennings and Zach Terrell
both rushed their way inside the Big South’s
career best rushing list with their yardage
totals against North Greenville last weekend.
Jennings rushed for 100 yards and currently
ranks No. 4 on the list with 2,233 yards, while
Terrell’s 70 rushing yards moved the senior
to No. 6 on the list with 2,174 career rushing
yards. Terrell needs 41 more yards to pass
Coastal Carolina’s Patrick Hall, who rushed for
2,214 yards, while Jennings needs 111 yards
to surpass the Chanticleers’ Andres Perkins
2,343 yards.
Dynamic Duo
Rashad Jennings and Zach Terrell provided
the Flames with three of their seven total
touchdowns scored in Liberty’s season opener
against North Greenville. Jennings found the
end zone on the ground twice during the first
half, while Terrell opened the Liberty scoring
with a 15-yard rushing touchdown 10 minutes
into the game. The contest marked the 10th
time Jennings and Terrell have rushed for a
touchdown in the same game, since Jennings
joined the program in 2006.

top FCS honors, as the running back was named to the preseason Walter Payton Award watch list on Aug.
29, 2008.
The preseason list of the 16 best FCS offensive players in the nation was announced by the Sports
Network, the organization which will conduct the voting for the prestigious honor. The selections included seven running backs, six quarterbacks and three wide receivers.
The Walter Payton Award watch list will be updated three times throughout the season, before voting takes place after the conclusion of the regular season. The list will be updated early in October and
November before being finalized on Nov. 24.
The top three finalists will be announced by the Sports Network on Dec. 1, while the winner will be
announced at the Sports Network FCS Awards Dinner, held on the eve of the NCAA Division I Football
Championship game (Dec. 18). Jennings is Liberty’s first-ever football player to land a spot on the Walter
Payton Award watch list.
