Big South Coach of the Year honors in back-toback seasons. Last year, the Flames were 8-3
and a perfect 4-0 against Big South foes.
Jay Mills became the second coach in
the history of the Buccaneer program, taking
over as head coach in 2003. Over the past
six seasons, the skipper has posted a 30-32
record, highlighted by a share of the Big South
crown in 2005 and league Coach of the Year
honors.
Homecoming Happiness
Today’s game will mark the 36th
Homecoming football game in the history of
the program. Liberty has been very successful
on the festive weekend, as the Flames enter
the game having posted a 23-12 overall record
in previous Homecoming contests.

Sweet Sixteen
For the 16th-consecutive season, the
Flames and the Buccaneers are meeting on
the gridiron, making the series the longest
running in Liberty history. The Flames have
proven victorious during 13 out of the
previous 15 match-ups, including both under
head coach Danny Rocco. Liberty has only
lost once in eight games played at Williams
Stadium against Charleston Southern, falling
25-0 in 2000.
Home Sweet Home
Today, the Flames welcome visiting
Charleston Southern to Williams Stadium, a
facility Liberty has called home for the past
20 seasons. Liberty rallied for a 37-19 victory
over Towson State on Oct. 21, 1989, and has
won 65 percent of its contests since, having
posted a 69-38 record at the on-campus
facility. Last year, the Flames went undefeated
at home for the second time in program
history, posting a school-record 6-0 record, en
route to their Big South title run.
Sensational Sellouts
For the 10th-straight home game, the
Flames filled Williams Stadium beyond
capacity, as 15,483 fans packed into the oncampus facility last weekend. The attendance
figure was the second largest in the 20-year
history of the stadium, falling 148 shy of the
school record. Since head coach Danny Rocco
has arrived at Liberty, the Flames have filled
Williams Stadium beyond capacity 12 out of
16 games. Liberty has posted a 13-3 record
during those contests, averaging 13,198 fans.

Attending to the National Numbers
Following its 10th-consecutive sellout
crowd at Williams Stadium in the Flames’
35-21 setback to Lafayette last weekend,
Liberty ranks as one of the nation’s elite in
terms of home attendance figures. The Flames
rank No. 8 nationally among FCS programs in
filling stadium capacity (123.49 percent), No.
9 in total home attendance (59, 274) and No.
14 in average home attendance (14,819).
Saturday Night Lights
Under head coach Danny Rocco, the
Flames are 11-3 in night games. Since 1976,
Liberty has compiled a 53-65-3 in night games.
In Broad Daylight
Under head coach Danny Rocco, the
Flames are 8-6 in games played during the
day. Since 1976, Liberty is 112-113-1 in day
games.
Natural Versus Artificial Surfaces
Under head coach Danny Rocco, the
Flames are 15-7 on artificial turf and 4-2 on
natural grass. Overall, Liberty is 96-107-4 on
natural grass and 75-75 on artificial turf. The
Flames play their home games at Williams
Stadium, which has an artificial surface, as
new state-of-the-art FieldTurf was installed
prior to the start of the 2006 season. Liberty
has posted a 13-3 record at home since the
new surface was installed.
Overtime Update
The Flames enter today’s game having
posted a 3-5 record in overtime games.
Liberty’s last overtime game came on Sept.
15, 2007, when the Flames dropped a
48-41 decision to William & Mary in double
overtime in Williamsburg, Va.
Liberty has only played two of its eight
overtime games away from Williams Stadium.
Liberty’s first extra-period game was a 34-28
road lost to Morgan State on Sept. 21, 1996.
Liberty’s last victory in an overtime contest
came on Nov. 22, 2003, when it closed out the
2003 campaign with a 49-42 win over Hofstra.

Liberty captured its first-ever Big South
championship last year, sweeping through
the conference with an unblemished 4-0
league record. Liberty was the fifth program in
league history to finish a conference campaign
undefeated, winning its Big South games by
more than 30 points per game (47.8 average
points scored to 17.0 average points allowed).
Raising Up No. 71
Prior to the start of the Flames’ contest
against Tusculum on Sept. 1, 2007, Liberty
ceremonially honored founder Dr. Jerry
Falwell, who passed away the previous
May, by starting a new game day tradition.
Members of the University Police force raised
a No. 71 flag underneath the Liberty Flames
flag above the South end zone, just prior to
the team taking the field, bringing the 14,925
fans in attendance to their feet.
The new tradition has become a
permanent part of the Flames’ pregame
ceremonies at all home football games.
A different person/group will receive the
honor of raising the flag at each game.
Today’s honorees are members of the Liberty
University Alumni Office, as this weekend is
Homecoming Weekend on campus.

At the Top Again
For the second year in a row, the Flames
were named the preseason favorites to hoist
the Big South trophy at the end of the season.
Liberty garnered 12 out of 13 first-place votes
in the annual Big South coaches and media
preseason poll and finished 19 points ahead
of second-place Coastal Carolina in total
votes.
Noting the Streak
Liberty had its 11-game winning streak
snapped on Oct. 18 with a 35-21 loss to
Patriot League contender Lafayette. Below is
a breakdown of where the streak ranked on
the program, conference and national scenes
heading into the contest against the Leopards:
• It was the longest winning streak in
program history (bettering a 10-game winning
streak which spanned the 1988 and 1989
seasons)
• It was the second longest in Big South
history (longest was 14-straight by Charleston
Southern over the 2005 and 2006 seasons)
• It was the nation’s longest active winning
streak among FCS program (ranking head of
Sacred Heart, James Madison, San Diego and
Elon, who all had won six-straight games)
Not Many in the NCAA Could Say the Same
Liberty’s 11-game winning streak ranked
as the longest active winning streak among
FCS programs prior to its loss to Lafayette on
Oct. 18. At the time of the loss, Liberty was
one of six NCAA programs to own a doubledigit winning streaks out of 629 total NCAA
programs (FBS – 120, FCS – 123, Division
II – 150 and Division III – 236). The Flames
were joined in the elite group by BYU (FBS,
16-straight), Tuskegee (Division II, 20-straight),
Bloomsburg (Division II, 12-straight), American
International (Division II, 10 straight)
and Wisconsin-Whitewater (Division III,
18-straight).
Big South Barrage
Despite the Flames 11-game winning
streak coming to an end against Lafayette
on Oct. 18, one streak remains alive for
Liberty as the Flames have reeled off eightstraight Big South victories dating back to
the 2006 season. The last time the Flames
dropped a Big South contest was on Oct.
21, when Liberty fell, 27-24, to GardnerWebb. The league run is tied for the best in
conference history, as Coastal Carolina also
had an eight-game conference winning streak
(11/22/03—10/29/05).
Fierce In Front of Their Own Fans
Not only did the loss to Lafayette on Oct.
18 snap the nation’s longest FCS winning
streak, but it also halted an 11-game home
winning streak for Liberty. The successful
home victories run was the longest in program
history and was the second longest in the
nation at the time among FCS programs. San
Diego currently holds the nation’s longest FCS
home winning streak at 28 games.
Still Ranking Among the Best
The Flames lost to Lafayette last weekend
snapped Liberty’s 11-game winning streak
and dropped the Flames six spots in the
Sports Network and FCS Coaches polls. Liberty
enters today’s match-up with Charleston
Southern ranked No. 20 in the Sports Network
poll and No. 21 in the FCS Coaches national
ranking. The Flames have been ranked among
the nation’s Top 25 programs for sevenstraight weeks, setting a program record for
consecutive weeks in the national polls.

Speaking of votes, Liberty Head Coach
Danny Rocco and Sparky, the program’s
mascot, are currently in the running for two
national honors. In the fan portion of the
poll for the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year
honor, Rocco ranked second in the Division
I-AA listing, as of Thursday, while Sparky is the
leading write-in candidate in the Capital One
Mascot Challenge. Voting in both fan polls
opened during the first week of the year and
will conclude directly following the conclusion
of the regular season.
Rocco Revels in Defensive Effort
The offensively minded Flames brought a
smile to a 20-year defensive coaching veteran
on Oct. 11, as Liberty shutout Big South
newcomer Stony Brook, 33-0, at Williams
Stadium. The blanking was the fifth shutout
under head coach Danny Rocco and the 18th
in the history of the Flames football program.
Yardage Monsters
For the fourth-straight game and the sixth
time this year, the Flames surpassed the 400
total offensive yard mark against Lafayette
last Saturday, finishing the game with 137
more total offensive yards than the Leopards
(475 to 338). Liberty currently ranks No. 6
nationally in the statistical category, averaging
453.0 total offensive yards per game.

Passing Prowess
For the first time under head coach Danny
Rocco, the Flames finished a game with 300
or more team passing yards. More than 70
percent of Liberty’s offensive numbers came
via the airways, as Liberty passed for 344
yards. Liberty’s previous high during Rocco’s
three-year tenure was 281 yards against
Presbyterian last year. All 344 yards came
from senior Brock Smith’s arm, marking the
15th best single-game passing performance in
school history.
Run Game Reserved by Leopards
For the second time this year, Liberty
failed to surpass the 200-yard team rushing
mark, as Lafayette held the Flames to a season
low 131 rushing yards. The figure was the
lowest team rushing total since Liberty was
held to 74 yards by Elon in 2007 and was the
sixth lowest under head coach Danny Rocco.
Despite the fewer rushing yards, Liberty still
ranks No. 9 nationally by averaging 233.9
rushing yards per game. Since head coach
Danny Rocco’s arrival in 2006, Liberty has
averaged 208.5 rushing yards per game and
has surpassed the 200-yard plateau in 14 out
of 29 games.
Points a Plenty under Rocco
Ine five out of seven games this year, the
Flames have scored 30 or more points, doing
so last against Stony Brook on Oct. 11. Liberty
currently ranks No. 18 in scoring offense,
as the Flames are averaging 34.3 points per
game. Last year, the Flames were No. 3 in
scoring offense, averaging a program and Big
South record 42.6 points per game. Since head
coach Danny Rocco took over the program in
2006, Liberty has averaged 33.3 points scored
per game, and Liberty is 16-2 in contests when
the Flames roll up 30 or more points on the
scoreboard.
Don’t Forget About the “D”
Despite Liberty’s gaudy offensive numbers
over the past two seasons, the Flames defense
has played a significant factor in the team’s
success, bringing a smile to head coach Danny
Rocco’s face, as he is a 20-plus year defensive
coaching veteran. Since 2006, Liberty has held
its opponents to an average of 19.6 points
per game, meaning Liberty is outscoring its
opponents by almost two touchdowns per
game (an average of 13.7 points per game).
A Decisive Number
The Flames prolific offense is starting to
catch the eye of the nation, as Liberty ranks
No. 18 in scoring offense (34.3 points per
game). The 30-point mark seems to be the key
number for a Flames’ victory, as Liberty is 16-2
under head coach Danny Rocco when Liberty
scores more than 30 points in a game. The
Flames are 3-7 under Rocco when Liberty fails
to reach the 30-point threshold.
An Active Chain Gang
One of the busiest crews on the field
during a Liberty football game is the “chain
gang”, as Liberty enters today’s match-up with
Charleston Southern ranked No. 2 nationally
in third-down conversion rate. Liberty has
picked up a new set of downs 52.1 percent of
the time in third-down situations (49-of-94).
The only team to have a better third-down
conversion rate nationally than Liberty is
Monmouth at 56.4 percent (53-of-94).
Frequent First Downs
Liberty’s potent offensive attack and high
third-down conversion rate have the Flames
ranked among the nation’s elite in another
statistical category. Liberty ranks No. 16 in
first down offense, picking up an average of
21.7 first downs per game. Should the Flames
continue to pick up first downs at the same
rate, Liberty would break a school record.
The Flames are on pace to pick up 260 total
first downs this year, which would surpass the
1993 squad who finished the year with 241
first downs.
First Down Frenzy
Liberty finished the Oct. 11 contest
against Stony Brook with 28 total first downs,
including 17 via rushing plays. The 28 first
downs were the second most under head
coach Danny Rocco, ranking only behind
Liberty’ 29 first downs during its 31-0 shutout
victory over Gardner-Webb to wrap up
Liberty’s first-ever Big South championship.
Fewer Infractions
During the first three games of the year,
Liberty averaged 10.7 penalties per game
for an average of 101 penalty yards (32 total
penalties/303 total penalty yards). Over the
last four games, Liberty totaled 19 infractions
for 148 total yards (averaging 4.8 penalties
and 37.0 penalty yards per contest). Despite
the marked improvement, Liberty still ranks
No. 85 nationally in penalties per game (7.29)
and No. 86 in penalty yards per game (64.43).

Taking Better Care of the Rock
For the first time in three games, the
Flames gave away the ball, committing two
turnovers in its game against Lafayette last
weekend. The Flames rank No. 38 in turnovers
lost, having given the ball away 11 times in
seven games. During Liberty’s first two years
under head coach Danny Rocco, the Flames
valued possession of the football, ranking No.
7 in turnover margin in 2007 (1.27 per game)
and No. 20 in 2006 (0.55 per game).
The Ideal Job
If you are looking for the “cushy” job on
the Flames roster, you’ll find it in the area of
punting. Liberty enters today’s game as the
team with the fifth fewest total punts among
FCS program so far in 2008. The Flames have
been force to punt the ball away 19 times
over seven games (2.7 times per game). Fewer
punts mean Liberty’s offense is successful,
but it has hurt its punting game, as Liberty
ranks second to last among FCS programs in
net punting (averaging 25.53 yards gained by
punting).
Run Stoppers
For the third time in seven games this
year, an opponent was able to surpass the
100-yard mark in team rushing. Lafayette
rushed for 162 yards on 39 carries, finishing
the game with the second highest rushing
total Liberty has allowed this year. The only
other team to finish with more rushing yards
in a game against Liberty this year is Glenville
State, who ran for an opponent season high
209 yards. The Flames currently rank No. 31
nationally in rushing defense, allowing 115.6
team rushing yards per game.
Punt Return Power Down
After five games, the Flames were ranked
as one of the top punt return teams in the
nation, averaging 17.6 yards per punt return.
However, Liberty’s last two opponents have
kept the Flames from returning punts, as the
Flames recorded one punt return against both
Stony Brook and Lafayette. Despite the lower
punt return totals of late, the Flames still
rank No. 11 nationally in punt returns, now
averaging 15.5 yards per return.
Protecting the Passer
After allowing three sacks in its seasonopener against North Greenville, the Flames
offensive line has banned together to allow
just two sacks over the last six games. Liberty
currently ranks No. 6 nationally, as the Flames
are surrendering 0.71 sacks per game. Last
year, Liberty finished the season ranked No.
4 in the country, as the Flames allowed 0.73
sacks per contest. All in all, the Flames have
allowed less than a sack a game (0.82/23 in 28
games) since head coach Danny Rocco took
over the program in 2006.
Kings of the Return Game
James Madison held onto its No. 1
ranking in FCS football in its last outing, thanks
to a last-second punt return for a touchdown,
the Dukes’ third such return of the season.
Liberty and James Madison are among a select
few in the nation at the FCS level, as the two
programs are joined by five others who have
returned at least one punt and one kickoff
for a touchdown in 2008. The remaining five
in the elite group are Florida A&M, Georgia
Southern, Hampton, Northwestern State and
Tennessee-Martin.
Great Out of the Gate
For the second time in program history,
the Flames started the season with a 6-0
record before falling to Lafayette on Oct. 18.
Liberty also accomplished the feat in 1989;
however, the Flames are hoping for a better
finish than the previous 6-0 squad, as the
1989 team lost three out of their last games to
close out the year 7-4.
Legends to be Enshrined
Today during Liberty’s annual
Homecoming game, the Liberty University
Athletics Department will be honoring longtime head coach Sam Rutigliano and former
AFC Rookie of the Year and Pro Bowler Eric
Green. The pair of Liberty legends will join
founder Dr. Jerry Falwell, as jerseys which will
be retired in honor of their accomplishments.
An “HC” jersey will be hung in honor
of Rutigliano, while a No. 86 jersey will rest
next to Rutigliano’s paying tribute to Green’s
storied career at Liberty during a halftime
ceremony.

Quickly Joining the Elite
With the Flames 33-0 victory over Stony
Brook last week, head coach Danny Rocco
picked up his 20th career victory at Liberty.
The skipper (20-9/three seasons), who
reached the 20-win plateau the quickest in
program history, is currently tied with Morgan
Hout (20-29-1/five seasons) for third-place on
the Flames coaching charts in terms of overall
victories. Rocco ranks one behind Ken Karcher
(21-46/seven seasons), while legendary coach
Sam Rutigliano holds the coaching record with
67 wins (67-53/11 seasons).
Coaches on the Field
At halftime of the Flames’ annual Spring
Football Game on April 19, head coach Danny
Rocco tabbed six players for leadership
roles in 2008, when the skipper named his
team captains. Quarterback Brock Smith,
running back Rashad Jennings and center
Mike Godsil were named offensive team
captains. Defensively, nose guard Colin Dugan,
linebacker Nick Hursky and defensive back
Ryan Greiser were recognized as this year’s
defensive team captains.
New Leader in the Clubhouse
Rashad Jennings rushed for 148 yards and
a touchdown against Lafayette on Saturday,
marking the 18th 100-yard rushing game of
the senior’s career. The performance moved
him to the top of the Big South’s all-time
100-yard rushers list, surpassing Liberty’s Dre
Barnes, who finished his days in the league
with 17 career 100-yard games.
Standing at the Top
For the fifth-consecutive game, running
back Rashad Jennings recorded a rushing
touchdown, reeling off a 58-yard scoring
scamper against Lafayette. The touchdown run
gave the senior 230 career points at Liberty,
moving him atop Liberty’s all-time career
scoring list among non-kicking players.
Dynamic Duo
Dominic Bolden and Jonathan Crawford
both posted career numbers last Saturday
against Lafayette, as the pair individually
hauled in 150 and 106 receiving yards,
respectively. The duo became the 15th pair in
school history to surpass the 100-yard mark
during the same game. The last time two
receivers accomplished the feat was against
Charleston Southern on Nov. 10, 2001, when
Adrian Hall (133 yards) and Daniel Thomas
(110 yards) helped the Flamed down the
Buccaneers, 45-31.
Kevin Keeps Them Moving
Kevin Richard finished the Lafayette game
with three of Liberty’s four team quarterback
hurries, marking a new single-game career
high for the senior. The trio of quarterbacks
hurries was the second highest singlegame total this year by a Flames’ defender,
ranking only behind Asa Champman’s four
quarterback hurries against North Greenville
Mr. 3000
With his 148 rushing yards against
Lafayette, Rashad Jennings eclipsed the 3,000
career rushing mark. Since joining the Flames
in 2006, the senior has now rushed for 3,006
yards in 26 games (an average of 115.6 per
game). Only two players stand between
Jennings and the tops of Liberty’s and the Big
South’s all-time list. Dre Barnes tops both lists,
as Barnes rushed for 3,409 yards as a threeyear member of the conference and 4,035
four-year member on the Flames’ roster.
A Scoring Machine
Rashad Jennings, who currently ranks
tied for No. 4 nationally in scoring per game
(11.0), scored his 11th touchdown of the
season, bursting through for a 58-yard rushing
touchdown against Lafayette. The fourthlongest rushing of his career gave him 230
career points, making him LU’s all-time leader
in scoring excluding kickers as he passed
Lawrence Worthington’s mark of 228 points.
Biggest Day for Brock
Brock Smith had a career day against
Lafayette, throwing for a career-high 344
yards. The senior completed 24-of-37 pass
attempts, tying a career high for single-game
passing attempts.
Big Against the Bucs
Brock Smith enters today’s game needing
172 passing yards to become the fourth
quarterback in program and Big South history
to surpass the career 6,000 passing mark.
And if history is any indicator, he has a very
good chance against Charleston Southern.
The senior has thrown for 734 yards and six
touchdowns in three previous games against
the Buccaneers, completing 43-of-70 pass
attempts (61.4 percent).
Prior to his breakout game against
Lafayette last week, Smith’s previous career
high for yardage came against Charleston
Southern, as he passed for 315 yards and
three touchdowns during his freshman year,
earning him the starting role he has never
since relinquished.

A plethora of preseason distinctions for Liberty’s Rashad Jennings culminated with one of the nation’s
top FCS honors, as the running back was named to the preseason Walter Payton Award watch list on
Aug. 29, 2008. The preseason list of the 16 best FCS offensive players in the nation was announced by the
Sports Network, the organization which will conduct the voting for the prestigious honor.
The watch list was revised on Oct. 16, and Jennings was one of 13 holders from the original 16
preseason watch list members. The trio of newcomers to the list include Sam Houston State quarterback
Rhett Bomar, Weber State quarterback Cameron Higgins and Monmouth running back David Sinisi.
The Sports Network will revisit the Walter Payton Award watch list two more times before voting
commences. The list of 16 candidates will be reviewed early in November, before the finalized list will be
handed over to the voting panel at the conclusion of the regular season.
The top three finalists will be announced by the Sports Network on Dec. 1, while the winner will be
announced at the Sports Network FCS Awards Dinner, held on the eve of the NCAA Division I Football
Championship game (Dec. 18).

Liberty extended its FCS nation-leading
home winning streak to nine-straight games,
opening the year with a 49-10 win over visiting North Greenville, on Aug. 30, at a packed
Williams Stadium.
With the victory, Liberty opened the
year with a 1-0 record and moves its mark
to 20-2 in its last 22 home-opening contests.
The win was Liberty’s third-straight by 30 or
more points and fifth time in the previous six
games. The loss dropped North Greenville to
0-1 on the season.
The victory also pushed Liberty’s overall
winning streak to six games, dating back to
the previous year. The run was tied for third
longest in program history and the longest
since the Flames won six straight during the
1992 and 1993 seasons.
The game was played in front of 15,311
fans, which ranked as the second-largest
crowd to attend a Liberty home game and
the largest to ever see a Flames victory.
The figure only ranked behind Liberty’s
2006 contest against William & Mary, when
15,631 fans packed Williams Stadium for the
Flames’ annual Homecoming contest.
Early-game jitters plagued both squads
with a pair of miscues leading to two turnovers on each squad’s opening possession.
Liberty won the coin toss and elected to
receive, but on the 10th play of the drive,
quarterback Brock Smith was sacked by
Emmanuel Davis at the North Greenville
30-yard line, and the lost ball was picked up
by Johnell Bell.
Not to be outdone by the Crusaders,
Liberty’s defense made its presence known
six plays later. North Greenville passer Richard Harb tried to find an open receiver over
the middle, but the Flames’ Ryan Greiser
tackled him just as he was trying to catch
the ball, which caromed into the arms of Tim
Torrence for his first career interception at
Liberty’s 39-yard line.
Eight plays later, Zach Terrell, who was
moved to wide receiver in the offseason,
found a way to continue his amazing rushing touchdown streak. The senior took a
pitch from Smith and found the end zone
15 yards later for a score. The scoring burst
gave Terrell his 17th-consecutive game with
a rushing touchdown and lifted Liberty to a
7-0 edge with 3:01 left in the first.
Liberty’s defensive backs made their
second big play of the game, when Chuck
Duffey stepped in front of a Harb pass at the
North Greenville 36-yard line and returned it
27 yards, deep into the Crusaders’ red zone.
Big South Preseason Player of the
Year Rashad Jennings was handed the ball
three-straight plays. On the third run, the
senior found a hole over the left tackle for a
two-yard rushing touchdown, giving Liberty
a 14-0 lead with 1:19 left in the opening
period.
On the second play of the second
quarter, Harb was picked off again, this time
by Greiser at the 40-yard line. Nearly three
minutes later, Jennings took his third handoff
of the drive and found the end zone for a sixyard rushing touchdown to push the Flames’
lead to 21-0, 12:00 before halftime.
After the first three-and-out series of
the game, Liberty quickly added to its lead
with its first big offensive play of the game.
Smith dropped back in the pocket at midfield
and found Dominic Bolden open in the near
corner of the end zone for a 48-yard scoring
strike, extending the Flames’ advantage to
28-0 with 9:25 left in the first half.
The North Greenville offense pieced
together its first sustained drive of the first
half, following the touchdown pass, getting
inside Liberty’s red zone.
However, the drive stalled at the seven
yard line after a four-yard tackle for a loss by
defensive captain Nick Hursky. The Crusaders had to settle for a 24-yard Michael Sears
field goal to put the visitors on the scoreboard, 28-3, with 2:07 remaining before the
intermission.
Liberty maintained its 28-3 advantage
entering the locker room, but quickly added
to its lead in the third quarter.
After gaining possession of the ball
following a three-and-out series, Liberty
extended its advantage when Smith found
Jonathan Crawford open for an 18-yard
scoring strike at the 12:16 mark of the third,
sealing the victory for the homestanding
Flames.
Liberty managed to score two more
times the rest of the game, highlighted by
a 76-yard kickof return for a touchdown by
Crawford midway through the third quarter.
Liberty rolled up 440 total offensive
yards on the night, averaging 7.7 yards per
play. The Crusaders finished the game with
247 total offensive yards, averaging 3.4 yards
per play. The Flames led an even offensive
attack, rushing for 241 yards and passing for
261. North Greenville predominantly passed
during the game, amassing 178 yards in the
air to 69 yards on the ground.
Penalties plagued the contest, as Liberty
was whistled for 13 infractions for 136 yards
to account for the most penalty yards under
third-year head coach Danny Rocco.
Jennings posted his 13th career 100-yard
rushing game, hitting the mark on the nose
on 13 carries. The senior found the end zone
twice during the contest, marking his 11th
career multiple-touchdown game and the
sixth time in the last seven contests. Terrell
followed by rushing eight times for 70 yards
and his 27th career rushing touchdown.
Smith had pinpoint accuracy on the
evening, completing 14-of-17 pass attempts
for 171 yards and two touchdowns. Spencer
Landis saw considerable time in the second
half, completing 3-of-4 passing attempts for
28 yards.
Bolden led eight different receivers,
posting his first collegiate 100-yard game by
catching five passes for 100 yards. Crawford
followed by matching Bolden with five receptions for 44 yards. Both receivers finished
the game with touchdown receptions.
Chad Brown lead a near 100 team tackle
total in the game (95 for Liberty), finishing
the contest with a career-best seven stops.
The linebacker duo of Patrick Bannon and
Nick Hursky ended the game with six stops
apiece.

Five of Liberty’s six touchdowns on the
evening were for 20 or more yards, pushing
the Flames to a 44-27 victory over Glenville
State, on Sept. 6, in front of 13,917 fans at
Williams Stadium.
The victory, played in front of the
seventh-largest crowd in program history,
pushed Liberty’s record to 2-0. The loss
evened the Pioneers’ record at 1-1 early in
the 2008 season.
The 17-point win extended Liberty’s
home winning streak to 10 games, the longest in the country among FCS programs at
the point of the contest. The Flames entered
the game tied with Dayton, as the Flyers had
also claimed nine-straight home wins. However, Dayton had the weekend off before it
hosted Fordham at home on Sept. 13.
The Flames wasted little time getting
on the scoreboard, finding the end zone on
the fourth play of their opening possession.
On a third-and-three play from the Liberty 28-yard line, quarterback Brock Smith
dumped a pass off to Dominic Bolden.
The senior made an acrobatic catch, and
following two key blocks down field, scoring
on a 72-yard touchdown reception. The longest reception of Bolden’s career put Liberty
up 7-0 at the 12:14 mark of the first.
Liberty continued to pepper the airways,
making quick work offensively. After a second three-and-out series, Smith’s pin-point
toss to Jonathan Crawford on the near side
extended the Flames’ lead to 14-0 on the
third play of the ensuing drive with a 33-yard
touchdown reception.
Big plays persisted, but this time for
Glenville State, as the Pioneers found the
scoreboard on the second-longest rushing
touchdown surrender by a Danny Rocco-led
football team.
Following a 34-yard sweep to the right
by Jerry Seymour, the senior bettered the
run by busting through the line for a 56-yard
rushing touchdown with 8:01 left to play in
the opening period.
Liberty responded by mounting its
longest drive of the first quarter, pieced
together a five-play drive that saw the
Flames move the ball 58 yards for a score.
Mike Brown tried to get into the lengthy-play
category himself, when the redshirt freshman caught a ball in open space at midfield,
but he was shoved out of bounds by a pair of
Pioneer defenders at the two-yard line.
Two plays later, Zach Terrell pushed his
rushing touchdown streak to 18-consecutive
games, finding a gap in the line for a oneyard score. Paul Young’s point after attempt
was blocked, leaving the score at 20-7 with
5:38 left to play in the high-scoring first
period.
The margin remained the same until
the second quarter, when Liberty’s defense
forced the Pioneers to punt for the third
time in the game. Dustan Fox booted the ball
41 yards downfield with Bolden fielding it at
the 28-yard line.
Just like his touchdown catch, the senior
used several key blocks, which opened up
holes for Bolden’s first career punt return
touchdown.
The senior’s second of three scores on
the evening was his fourth career special
teams’ return for a touchdown, following
behind three kickoff returns.
Bolden showcased his big-play ability one last time before the halftime siren
sounded, catching a 28-yard pass from Smith
over his left shoulder in the far corner of the
end zone to give Liberty a 27-7 intermission
advantage.
A Matt Bevin’s 38-yard field goal midway
through the third quarter, followed by a
45-yard touchdown burst by Mike Brown in
the fourth sealed the victory for the Flames.
The Pioneers managed to tack on two late
touchdowns during the final two minutes of
the game and recovered an on-side kick for a
third possession.
But a pair of negative-yardage stops of
quarterback James McCants, including a
nine-yard sack by Trey Jacobs closed out the
victory.
Terrell posted his eighth career 100-yard
rushing game, leading the Flames 239-yard
rushing attack by carrying the ball 24 times
for 110 yards and the one-yard touchdown.
Seymour rushed 15 times for 145 yards
and a score, averaging an impressive 9.7
yards per rushing attempt.
Smith completed 7-of-11 pass attempts
for 202 yards and three touchdowns. The
contest marked the sixth time the quarterback has tossed three touchdowns in a single
game and moved the senior into fourth
place on Liberty’s all-time career touchdown
passing list.
Smith now has 36 touchdown passes
to his credit, moving past Ben Anderson’s
35 touchdowns thrown during his four-year
career (1994-97).
Crawford led the Flames with four receptions for 77 yards and a score. Bolden made
the most of his three catches, finishing the
game with 88 yards and two touchdown
passes.
Bolden also finished the contest with
265 total all-purpose yards, ranking as the
fifth most in Big South Conference singlegame history.
A pair of newcomers paced the Flames
defensive effort. Linebacker Jamal Giddens,
who got his first career start on the evening,
led Liberty with eight stops. Daryl Robertson
followed with seven stops, including three
and a half tackles for a loss.

No. 25 Liberty withstood two fourth
quarter touchdowns and made a key fourthdown stop with 1:39 remaining to hold on
for a 19-16 road victory over Western Carolina, on Sept. 13, at E.J. Whitmore Stadium.
With the victory, the Flames moved to
3-0 for the first time since the 1997 season, a
year Liberty finished its campaign with a 9-2
overall record. Western Carolina’s secondstraight loss dropped the Catamounts to 1-2
on the season.
The three-point win also pushed Liberty’s winning streak to eight games, dating
back to its 2007 Big South championship
season. The winning streak was the second
longest active winning streak among FCS
program at the time, ranking one behind
Dayton’s nine-game streak. The Flyers also
held on for a 23-20 home victory over Fordham earlier in the day.
After holding the homestanding Catamounts to a three-and-out series on their
opening possession, Liberty methodically
used its running game and a pair of key
third-down conversions to take an early lead.
Rashad Jennings carried the ball five
times for 17 yards, while quarterback Brock
Smith completed 3-of-5 pass attempts for
37 yards to move the Flames into scoring
position. A majority of the senior’s passing
yardage came on a 26-yard completion to
Dominic Bolden on a third-and-10 play from
Liberty’s 45-yard line.
Ben Shipps capped the opening 12-play,
69-yard scoring drive, which used 5:03 on
the game clock, by booting a 29-yard field
goal through the uprights with 7:40 left
on the first quarter game clock to give the
Flames the early 3-0 edge.
Liberty looked like it might hold Western
Carolina scoreless over the remainder of the
period, including a stop on a third-and-six
play from the Flames’ 29-yard line. However,
Liberty was whistled for a roughing the
passer penalty on the play, extending the
Catamounts possession.
Two plays later, Quan Warley picked up
two precise blocks on the near side of the
field, and scored on a 15-yard sweep. The
scoring jaunt was the first career touchdown
for Warley, and gave the Catamounts a 7-3
lead with 1:23 left to play in the opening
quarter.
Following fumbles by both teams, Liberty drove downfield and tried to tack points
on the scoreboard midway through the
second quarter. But the drive stalled inside
the Catamounts’ red zone at the 13-yard
line, leaving the Flames to settle for a field
goal attempt.
However, a 30-yard attempt by Shipps
attempt was blocked by a leaping Chris
Edwards at the line of scrimmage, leaving
Western Carolina a four-point lead with 5:47
left to play before halftime.
Liberty’s offense had one more chance
before intermission, driving down to the Catamounts’ four-yard line. The Flames looked
like they might get their first touchdown of
the evening, when Smith broke out of the
pocket and found Corey Rasberry open in
the flat.
But, the floating pass slipped through
the tight end’s fingers, leaving the Flames
to settle for a 27-yard field goal by Shipps
with 32:5 ticks left in the opening half, as the
home team headed to the locker room with
a 7-6 lead.
The Flames dominated every aspect of
the game during the first 30 minutes of action, except on the scoreboard. Liberty held
a 20:08-9:52 time of possession advantage
and tallied 186 total offensive yards to Western Carolina’s 81 total offensive yards.
Liberty continued to control the battle
for the clock, grinding out an 80-plus yard,
opening drive of the first half. But once
again, the Catamounts kept the Flames out
of the end zone, as Liberty took the lead momentarily on a 23-yard field goal by Shipps.
However, Western Carolina was whistled
for an unsportsmanlike penalty on the
kicking attempt to give Liberty a fresh set of
downs.
And the Flames took advantage of the
extra opportunity, when Dominic Bolden
took the handoff on a reserve to the far
side of the field. The senior scored when he
completed his three-yard rushing play with a
burst through two defenders, putting Liberty
on top for the first time in the contest, 13-7,
at the 8:44 mark of the third quarter. The
12-play, 86-yard drive used up 6:10 on the
game clock.
With Western Carolina driving downfield, Liberty’s defense forced its second
turnover of the evening. Ian Childress broke
through the line and sacked Catamounts’
quarterback Andy Horn for the second time,
forcing a fumble, which was recovered by
Chad Brown.
Eight plays later, Smith called his own
number on a one-yard keeper, scoring his
second career rushing touchdown to push
Liberty’s lead to 19-7 with 45.5 left to play
in the third quarter. Shipps extra point was
blocked, giving Liberty a 12 point edge.
The Catamounts quickly struck back on
the first play of the fourth quarter, as Horn
found Marquel Pittman open on a screen
pass. The sophomore took the ball and
found several holes in Liberty’s downfield
defense, scoring on a 78-yard touchdown
reception. Blake Bostic continued the kicking
struggles by both teams on the evening,
missing the extra point to leave Liberty up
six, 19-13, with 14:46 left to play in the ball
game.
After a three-and-out series by Liberty,
the Catamounts continued to pressure the
Flames, getting down inside Liberty’s red
zone to the seven-yard line. But a nine-yard
sack by Chad Brown, followed a delay of
game penalty on Western Carolina forced
the host team to settle for a 38-yard, Bostic
field goal at 7:12 to pull within three points
at 19-16.
A second straight three-and-out series
forced Liberty to punt the ball away with
3:34 left to play, but Mike Larsson pinned the
Catamounts deep in their own territory at
the 10-yard line on the ensuing punt.
A six-yard pass play from Horn to Warley
enabled Western Carolina to move the
chains once. But four plays later, Horn’s pass
attempt to Adam Hearns fell short of the
receiver to give Liberty possession of the ball
and enable the Flames to wind out the clock.
At game’s end, the Flames were still
dominate in the box score totals. Liberty
finished with 72 plays to the Catamounts 52
plays, enabling the Flames to outgain the
home team 338 yards to 247. Liberty also
finished the game with 37:36 of total time of
possession.

Rashad Jennings rushed for a career-best
220 yards and three touchdowns, but it was
a 24-yard field goal by Matt Bevins as time
expired that lifted No. 25 Liberty to a 31-28
victory over No. 23 Youngstown State, on
Sept. 27, at Stambaugh Stadium.
With the victory, the Flames remained
unbeaten in 2008, moving their record to
4-0 on the season, and extend their winning
streak to an FCS-best nine-straight games.
The win was Liberty’s ninth over a ranked
FCS opponent in program history and the
first since Liberty defeated No. 24 Charleston
Southern, 34-20, on Nov. 11, 2006.
Liberty won the game’s coin toss and
deferred to the Penguins, giving Youngstown
State the ball to open the contest. And the
home team took quick advantage of the
game’s first possession, methodically moving
the ball downfield to score with 7:38 left in
the first quarter.
Penguins quarterback Brandon Summers
completed eight-of-eight passes to account
for 62 of the team’s 77 yards on the 13-play
drive. The eighth-consecutive completion was a seven-yard slant to Dominique
Barnes on the far side of the field, giving
Youngstown State an early 7-0 lead.
Following a Brock Smith intercepted pass
and the two teams trading three-and-out
series, Summers kept his passing streak alive
by competing his next four pass attempts to
get the Penguins to the Liberty 18-yard line,
ending the opening 15 minutes of action.
After resetting the chains at the south
end of the stadium, Summers showed that
he can do damage on the ground as well.
The junior faked a pass attempt, freezing the
defense and allowing the speedy hurler to
burst up the middle and score on an 18-yard
run, six seconds into the period, extending
the home team’s advantage to 14-0.
Liberty overcame its opening-quarter jitters, responding with a 70-yard scoring drive
to pull back within seven points. The Flames
kept to the ground for seven of the 10 plays
in the drive, including the final play of the
drive, which ate up 4:21 on the game clock.
Zach Terrell used blocks by Derek Bishop
and Rashad Jennings to find a hole on the
left side of the line for a three-yard rushing
touchdown, giving the senior his 29th career
rushing touchdown.
After forcing the Penguins to punt the
ball away on the next possession, the Flames
continued to pound away at Youngstown
State with a ground attack.
Eight of Liberty’s nine plays on the
86-yard drive, which lasted 4:48 on the
clock, were of the rushing variety. Three
were of note, as Jennings got the Flames
into Youngstown State territory, bouncing off
two defenders at the line of scrimmage to
open up a hole for a 55-yard game, his fifthlongest run since joining the Flames’ roster.
Three plays later, the drive would have
stalled in the Penguins’ red zone, but Smith
tucked the ball away and the quarterback
leaped over two defenders to pick up 10
yards on a third-and-seven play.
Jennings was handed the ball on the
following three plays, including a two-yard
scoring run to the near side of the field
with 2:03 left before the intermission. The
senior’s 13th carry of the evening needed
an extra effort to find the end zone, knotting
the contest at 14-14.
Youngstown State tried to break the
deadlock, quickly marching downfield on the
ensuing drive and getting the ball down to
the Flames’ 16-yard line. But on third-andsix, Summers was flushed from the pocket
and his sideline toss was picked off by Chuck
Duffey with three seconds left on the game
clock, leaving the game tied at half.
Liberty took the ball on its second possession of the second half and scored their
21th-unanswered point, thanks to a trick
play and some strong rushing by Jennings.
At its own 36-yard line, Terrell took a
pitch from Smith and the A-back player
tossed his first pass since 2006, hooking up
with Dominic Bolden 51 yards downfield. Prior to his career-long pass play, the one-time
quarterback’s last pass was against Charleston Southern on Nov. 11 of that season.
Three plays later, Jennings muscled his
way into the end zone from two yards out,
capping off an eight-play, 95-yard drive to
push Liberty’s lead to 21-14 with 2:21 left to
play in the third.
Liberty’s defense quickly forced the Penguins to punt the ball away on the ensuring
drive. The three-and-out series was keyed
by a pass break-up by Chris Rocco and an
11-yard sack by Jamal Giddens.
Bolden, who entered the game ranked
No. 9 nationally in average punt return yards
(17.5 per return), proved why he is one of
the best return men in the nation. The senior broke several tackles on the far side of
the field, staying in bounds all the way on a
52-yard punt return to the YSU six-yard line.
On the following play, Jennings once
again got extra yardage on a rushing play,
extending the nose of the football over the
goal line for a six-yard rushing touchdown
with 28 seconds left in the third quarter,
boosting Liberty’s lead to 14 points, 28-14.
However, homestanding Youngstown
State didn’t go down quietly, as the Penquins
regrouped for a fourth-quarter charge.
After Jonathan Crawford fumbled the ball at
midfield following a reception, Youngstown
State quickly moved downfield and pulled
within seven, 28-21, when Summers capped
an eight-play, 50-yard drive with a four-yard
pass play to Donald Jones with 6:19 left.
Liberty, trying to run out the clock, managed to advance the ball to the Youngstown
State 34-yard line. However, on a third-andfour play, Smith’s attempted sideline pass
was picked off by Mike Barlak with 2:31
left in the ballgame, giving the home team
another chance.
Youngstown State continued to ride the
strong throwing arm of Summers, as the
junior completed six-straight passes to move
the Penguins 64 yards downfield in just 52
seconds. The sixth and final pass was an
11-yard strike to Ferlando Williams in the
near side of the end zone, tying the game at
28-28 with 1:29 left in regulation.
An out-of-bounds kickoff gave Liberty
possession at the 40-yard line, where Smith
countered Summers’ quick moving of his
squad. Liberty’s senior quarterback completed four-of-seven pass attempts, including an
eight-yard slant to Mike Brown that moved
the ball into potential field goal range.
Following a five-yard run up the middle
by Jennings to give Liberty the ball on the
near-side hash mark, head coach Danny
Rocco called on the freshman kicker, Bevins,
to clinch the victory. With the clock at three
seconds, Bevins sent the ball through the
uprights for his second career collegiate field
goal, lifting Liberty to a momentous victory.

For the third-straight road game, No.
20/21 Liberty outlasted an opponent, this
time picking up a 43-38 victory over Big
South rival Coastal Carolina in its conference
opener, Saturday night, at Brooks Stadium.
With the win, the Flames ran their record to 5-0 on the year and 1-0 in Big South
play. The victory extended the nation’s longest FCS winning streak to 10 games and tied
a program record, as Liberty also reeled off
10-straight wins over the span of the 1988
and 1989 seasons.
For the third time in 2008, the Flames
put points up on the scoreboard during their
opening drive, taking a 7-0 lead with 9:36
left to play in the opening 15 minutes.
Rashad Jennings carried the ball four
times on the eight-play drive, however, the
senior tailback was the intended target of
quarterback Brock Smith on third-and-eight
play from the Coastal 23-yard line. Jennings
caught the pass over the middle and broke
several tackles before getting the nose of the
football over the goal line to give Liberty the
early advantage.
After a three-and-out series on the ensuing drive, Liberty’s special teams, which entered the game ranked No. 11 in the nation
in punt return yardage, showcased its return
prowess. Dominic Bolden, who ranked
eighth individually coming into the contest,
made use of a key block by Wes Cheek to
clip off a 39-yard punt return.
Bolden’s third-longest punt return of
the season set up Liberty’s next scoring opportunity, as three plays later, Matt Bevins
knocked down a 22-yard field goal at the
6:37 mark, pushing LU’s advantage to 10-0.
Coastal Carolina made a quarterback
change on the following drive, placing
redshirt freshman Jamie Childress under
center. And the move by head coach David
Bennett paid off, as the rookie scored his
first collegiate touchdown, diving one yard
on a third-and-goal play with 1:56 left to play
in the first quarter to trim Liberty’s lead to
three points, 10-7.
The Flames failed to move the chains on
their next drive, forcing to punt the ball away
four plays later as time expired on the first
quarter game clock. Starting quarterback
Zach MacDowall returned the game, completing two out of his three pass attempts
for 46 yards to get the Chanticleers into
Liberty territory.
The Chanticleers took to the ground for
the next three plays, getting a pair of 15-yard
jaunts from Arthur Sitton and Jamie Fordham. The second by Fordham gave Coastal
Carolina a 14-10 lead with 12:30 left in the
second quarter.
Liberty regrouped on its next drive,
piecing together its longest drive of the first
quarter. On the 12th play of the drive, Smith
faked a handoff to Jonathan Crawford and
found Jennings wide open in the near side of
the end zone for his second receiving touchdown of the game. The four-yard receiving
by the senior with 7:01 left before the break,
gave Liberty a 17-14 lead.
Five plays later, Patrick Calvary picked off
his seventh career pass, moving the senior
into fifth place on the Big South all-time interception list, which gave Liberty possession
with 4:44 left to play before halftime.
The Chanticleers looked like they might
have halted the Flames on a third-and-13
play from the Coastal Carolina 23-yard line.
However, Smith got a key block on the offensive line from Jennings so the senior could
find Bolden open on a slant route, to give
Liberty a 10-point lead with 29 seconds left
before the intermission.
Liberty drove down the length of the
field on the first drive of the second half,
thanks in part to a third-down conversion
play that saw B.J. Hayes scamper for 44
yards, However, the drive stalled in the
Red Zone, as the Flames had to settle for
a 28-yard field goal by Bevins, which gave
Liberty a 13-point edge, 27-14, with 11:40
left in the third.
The Chanticleers looked like they quickly
answered, as MacDowall hooked up with
Sitton for a screen pass, which the senior
took the end zone less than a minute later.
However, the play was called back due to a
holding penalty at midfield.
Infractions continued to plague the
Chanticleers on the drive, as CCU was whistled for four more on the drive, including a
second wave off on a MacDowell touchdown
pass to Brandon Whitley, leaving the home
squad to settle for a 42-yard field by Justin
Durham at the 5:11 mark of the third quarter, cutting the lead to 10 points, 27-17.
Following a 17-play drive that had Liberty’s defense on the field for 6:24, the Flames
quickly ushered their defenders back on the
field, as Hayes scored on the next play.
The 66-yard sweeping touchdown run
to the far side of the field, Liberty’s longest
run of the year, pushed the Flames lead to
17 points, 34-17, as the Flames doubled the
Chanticleers up 15 seconds later.
Coastal Carolina mustered some fourthdown magic on the ensuing drive, as Liberty
looked like it might tackle MacDowall and
regain possession on downs.
But the sophomore squirmed away from
several would-be tacklers to find Chris Floyd
open for a 21-yard play at the LU six-yard
line. MacDowall called his own number on
the next play, cutting the lead back to 10
points, 34-24, with 1:23 left in the third.
The two teams traded touchdown during
the first five minutes of the fourth quarter.
Jennings tacked on his third touchdown
of the game, this time on the ground. The
senior bowled over several defenders, scampering for a 35-yard rushing touchdown with
11:53 left in the game.
However, Coastal Carolina quickly moved
the ball downfield and pulled within eight
points, 40-32, following a Marquel Willis
touchdown pass from MacDowall and a twopoint conversion pass to Trent Usher with
11:53 remaining on the clock.
Trying to wind down the game clock, LU
handed the ball to Jennings five times on the
next nine-play drive, helping set up a 34-yard
field goal by Bevins with 7:34 left, pushing
Liberty’s lead to 11 points, 43-32.
Kent Hicks intercepted the ball on the
next play, but Liberty was forced to punt four
plays later, following a three-and-out series.
MacDowall quickly moved the Chanticleers
downfield 91 yards on 15 plays, completing
the drive with a 14-yard touchdown pass
to Willis with 1:59 left on the game clock.
A two-point rushing attempt by Fordham
failed, leaving the score at 43-38.
Liberty recovered an attempted on-side
kick and handed the ball off to Jennings on
the next three plays. On the third rush, Jennings broke free for a sure touchdown run,
but the senior slid down at the one-yard line,
ending the game as Liberty was then able to
run the clock out.

The first two possessions of the game
set the tone, as Liberty reeled off its 11thstraight victory and its fifth shutout under
Danny Rocco, when the Flames downed
Stony Brook, 33-0, at Williams Stadium.
The victory pushed Liberty’s record to
6-0 on the year and 2-0 in Big South play.
The win extended the nation’s longest FCS
winning streak and set a new program
record, surpassing the previous mark set
during the 1988 and 1989 seasons. The
Flames have now won eight-straight Big
South games, tying Coastal Carolina’s mark
for consecutive league victories.
The loss, the Seawolves’ fifth-straight
since opening the year with a 42-26 victory
over Colgate, dropped Stony Brook’s record
to 1-5 and 0-1 in conference action, as the
visitors were playing in their first-ever Big
South Conference game.
The Flames won the opening coin toss
and elected to take the ball, trying to jump
out ahead of the visiting Seawolves. The
Flames pieced together a 17-play drive to
open the game, which stalled at the Stony
Brook 10-yard line, leaving Liberty to settle
for a 27-yard field goal by two-time reigning
Freshman of the Week Matt Bevins.
The drive ate up 9:03 on the game clock,
marking the longest drive in duration under
head coach Danny Rocco, bettering an 8:41
drive against Glenville State earlier this year.
The field goal gave the Flames an early 3-0
lead with 5:57 left to play in the first quarter.
Liberty quickly regained possession of
the football, after forcing the Seawolves to
punt the ball away after a three-and-out
series. Flames defensive back Ryan Greiser
upended wideout Lynell Suggs just as the
senior was attempting to catch the football,
negating the would-be, first-down reception.
Liberty managed to move the football
much quicker on the ensuing drive, marching
64 yards downfield to open up a 10-0 lead.
Mike Brown took a handoff from quarterback Brock Smith and scored on a 29-yard
reverse play with 97 seconds left in the
opening quarter.
For the third-straight drive, Liberty
managed to put points on the scoreboard,
stringing together a seven-play, 80-yard drive
to push the lead to 17-0 with 12:05 left in
the second quarter.
Liberty kept the ball on the ground five
out of seven plays during the drive, including
a sweeping 14-yard run by Rashad Jennings
to the far side of the field, giving the senior
his 32nd career rushing touchdown.
Stony Brook tried to get on the scoreboard late in the second quarter, as the
Seawolves mounted their longest drive during the opening 30 minutes. However, the
visiting team’s push ran out of steam at the
Liberty 23-yard line. Luke Gaddis came onto
the field, but his 41-yard field goal attempt
sailed wide left, leaving the Flames with a
17-point advantage at the break.
For the first time since Liberty’s season
opener against North Greenville, the Flames
held an opponent without a first-half touchdown. The Flames more than doubled the
Seawolves in total offensive yards in the first
half, 256 to 127, with 165 of their yards coming on the ground.
On the second play of the third quarter,
Liberty’s Nick Hursky forced the ball loose
from Stony Brook tailback Edwin Gowins,
giving the Flames possession at the Seawolves’ 43-yard line.
Liberty handed the ball off to Jennings
five-straight plays, with the senior capping
off his own 43-yard drive with a two-yard
sweeping run to the left for a score, pushing
the Flames’ lead to 23-0 with 12:15 left in
the third quarter.
Following Stony Brook’s third threeand-out series of the afternoon, the Flames
pushed their advantage to 30 points on the
ensuing drive. Smith completed all three
of his pass attempts during the 82-yard
drive, including a crisp slant pass to Dominic
Bolden for four yards for a score, securing
the victory for the homestanding team.
The Flames managed to tack on three
points in the fourth quarter on a 22-yard
Bevins field goal, while keeping the Seawolves from denting the scoreboard for the
18th shutout in program history and the fifth
under Rocco.
The Flames managed to continue their
offensive dominance in the contest, doubling
up the visitors. Liberty finished with 466
total offensive yards on 79 plays (5.9 average
yards per play) to Stony Brook’s 233 yards on
46 plays (5.1 average yards per play).
The 233 yards allowed by Liberty’s defense marked the third fewest by a Rocco-led
program against a Division I opponent.
For the third-straight outing, the Flames
bettered their rushing total from the previous game, as Liberty finished the contest
with a season-best 299 rushing yards.
Jennings was the leading ground grainer
for Liberty, rushing for 101 yards and two
touchdowns on 24 carries. The contest
accounted for the 17th time the senior
has surpassed the century mark during his
career, tying him for most 100-yard games in
Big South history, along with former Liberty
running back Dre Barnes.
The Stony Brook running back tandem of
Gowins and Big South preseason all-conference selection Conte Cuttino combined
for 93 rushing yards. Gowins finished with a
team-high 55 yards on seven carries, while
Cuttino led the team with 11 carries for 38
yards.
Smith won the battle of the quarterbacks, as the Liberty senior completed
14-of-20 pass attempts for 136 yards and a
score. Stony Brook’s Dayne Hoffman tallied
142 yards as he was 13-of-23, while being
picked off once.
Bolden led a plethora of wide receivers
on the afternoon, as his four receptions for
46 yards and a touchdown were the most by
16 different players who caught a pass in the
game. Suggs was Hoffman’s favorite target
in the contest, pulling in three receptions for
33 yards.
Defense dominated the contest, with
Hursky and Greiser leading the effort. Both
senior captains finished the game with six
tackles.
Liberty, who entered the game ranked
No. 27 in the nation in tackles for a loss,
added to its total with six negative-yardage
stops during the contest for a combined 19
yards. The Flames also finished with seven
pass break-ups, marking a new season high
and tying for the most under a Roccocoached football program.

Oct. 18, 2008 - Lynchburg, Va. - Williams Stadium (15,483)
No. 14/15 Liberty overcame a first-half
offensive barrage by Lafayette to give itself
chances late in the game. However, the visiting Leopards withstood several second-half
charges to take a 35-21 victory over Liberty.
The loss ends the nation’s longest FCS
winning streak at 11 games, dropping the
Flames to 6-1 on the season. Liberty, which
was looking for its first-ever 7-0 start in
program history, also saw its 11-game home
winning streak snapped in front of 15,483
fans.
The win pushed Lafayette’s record to 5-1
on the season and is the Leopards’ secondstraight road victory during their current
five-game road swing.
Lafayette scored first in the contest, taking advantage of a Liberty error the first time
the Flames touched the football. The Flames
stopped the Leopards on their opening
drive, but Liberty’s Dominic Bolden misplayed a bounding ball on the ground during
the punt, with Lafayette quickly jumping on
the loose pigskin.
Seven plays later, Lafayette’s DeAndre’
Morrow took a handoff from quarterback
Rob Curley and scored on a sweeping play to
the far side of the field. The six-yard run gave
the visitors a 7-0 lead with 8:10 left in the
opening quarter.
However, it didn’t take long for Bolden
to redeem himself for his errant play early in
the first, as the senior turned a short-yardage screen pass into a lengthy touchdown
reception. Smith found the wideout open,
and he used several key blocks downfield to
record a 60-yard touchdown reception, knotting the game at 7-7 just 49 seconds later.
Lafayette forced the Flames to punt the
ball away on Liberty’s next possession, which
Shaun Adair returned 63 yards to the Liberty
13-yard line. The return was a season long
for Lafayette and was the longest the Flames
have allowed since Charleston Southern
returned a punt for a score against Liberty
on Nov. 11, 2006.
Morrow was given the ball on the first
play of the drive and he made a carbon copy
of his scoring run from earlier in the game.
However, this time the junior found the end
zone from 13 yards out, giving the visitors
a 14-7 lead with 2:02 left in the opening
quarter.
The Flames tried to get on the scoreboard early in the second quarter, but Matt
Bevins’ 47-yard field goal attempt into the
wind came up just shy of the crossbar with
12:38 left in the first half.
The Leopards pieced together their first
double-digit play drive of the opening half,
with Joe Russo capping off a 10-play, 71-yard
drive, when the fullback scored from four
yards out. The four-yard burst pushed Lafayette’s lead to 21-7 at the 8:41 mark.
Five plays later, a previously quieted
Rashad Jennings made his presence known
quickly. Surveying the defense, Smith called
an audible at the line of scrimmage, changing the play up, which he handed off to Jennings. The senior broke through the line of
scrimmage and outran Lafayette’s defenders,
cutting the Leopards’ lead to seven points,
21-14, on a 58-yard touchdown run.
After Lafayette forced the second Liberty three-and-out series of the ball game,
the Leopards mounted their longest scoring
drive of the game. With the first-half clock
winding down, Curley found Tim Watson in
the far corner of the end zone on a 19-yard
flag route for a touchdown, giving Lafayette
a 28-14 edge at the intermission.
The Leopards finished the opening period with 249 total offensive yards, as compared to the Flames’ 202 yards. However,
Lafayette almost doubled up Liberty in terms
of plays, 46 to 24. The Leopards continually
moved the ball during the first 30 minutes,
picking up 15 first downs, as the squad converted on 8-of-11 third-down plays.
Jennings picked up 15 yards on the
Flames’ first rushing attempt of the second
half. However, four plays later the drive
stalled, forcing Liberty to punt. Bevins was
brought on to punt, but Lafayette’s Andy Romans got behind the line of scrimmage. The
senior linebacker blocked the kick, picked it
up and returned it 15 yards to push the visitors’ lead to 21 points, 35-14.
The Flames offense tried to regroup
on the ensuing drive, stringing together its
longest drive of the afternoon at 12 plays.
Liberty managed to get down to the Leopards’ two-yard line, but the Flames couldn’t
punch the ball in, leaving the squad to settle
for a field goal try.
Bevins connected on the 26-yard field
goal attempt, but the Flames were whistled
for illegal formation, forcing Liberty to move
five yards back and retry the kick. And this
time, the freshman was not as successful,
missing his second field goal attempt of the
game wide left.
The score remained the same until the
first play of the fourth quarter, when Smith
found Jonathan Crawford open on a 19-yard
post route. The senior’s third receiving
touchdown of the year pulled the Flames
back within 14 points, 35-21, with 14:56 left
to play in the contest.
Liberty’s defense continued to hold the
Leopards in check, forcing Lafayette to punt
the ball away with 11:02 left in regulation.
Smith quickly moved the Flames down
the field, completing 4-of-6 pass attempts,
followed by a 32-yard jaunt by Jennings up
the middle to get into the Leopards’ red
zone at the five-yard line.
However, Lafayette’s blockers came up
strong, keeping the Flames out of the end
zone by inches. Jennings, a Walter Payton
Award candidate, picked up four of the five
yards needed to score, but was halted on a
fourth-and-one just shy of the goal line with
6:58 left in the ball game.
Liberty pressed the Leopards during
the remaining seven minutes, but Lafayette
sealed the victory with its continued solid
play. Lafayette finished things off with a fake
punt, where Romans was snapped the ball
directly and picked up a first down, enabling
the Leopards to wind out the game clock.
The Flames dominated the second half,
outgaining Lafayette, 273 yards to 89. However, both squads were only able to add one
touchdown apiece to the scoreboard during
the final 30 minutes of the contest. Liberty
finished the game with 475 total offensive
yards to Lafayette’s 338.
Liberty, who came into the game ranked
No. 7 in the nation by averaging 251 rushing
yards per game, was held to a season-low
131 yards on 28 carries. Jennings recorded
his 18th career 100-yard game to set a new
Big South record, rushing for 148 yards.
