What are these RIT Environmental Management
Technology students doing with all those carts?
They’re recycling used computers during RIT’s
th
9 annual Electronics Recycling Day.
Why recycle electronics?
Electronics contain useful resources like copper,
gold, and plastic. They also contain toxic
chemicals such as lead, cadmium, mercury and
hexavalent chromium. About 80% of old
electronics are disposed of in landfills. By
recycling we save landfill space, recover
resources, and keep the toxic chemicals out of
the environment.
What’s special about the RIT electronic recycling
events?
The annual event is entirely student run. The
students advertise, collect the electronics from
almost every building at RIT, man the drop-off
locations, and sort the items so that they can be
picked up by an environmentally responsible
recycler. Nothing is shipped out of the US and
we even donate some of the computers to low
Who are they?
They are Justin, Heather, Robin, Samantha,
Chris, Nevin, and Frank. They’re in RIT’s
Environmental Management B.S. program, or 5year B.S./M.S. program, and they are part of our
club, the Student Environmental Action League.
income families. Last year’s event brought in
over 7.5 TONS in one day!
What gets dumped?
According to the EPA, Americans dispose of
approximately 40 million computers, 25 million
TVs, and over 100 million keyboards and mice
each year!
How can you get involved?
Whether you enroll in RIT’s Environmental
Management BS program, our 5-year BS/MS
program, or our new Environmental
Sustainability BS program (available to anyone
accepted into the Environmental Management
program for Fall of 2010), we hope you get
involved with the club. There are leadership
positions (president, VP, treasurer, publicity,
historian), or you can help plan our e-cycling
day, invasive species search & destroy day or
wetland planting day.
For more information please contact Miss Anne Klug, professional advisor at [email protected] , Mrs. Amy
Sickles, dept. secretary at [email protected], or Prof. Josh Goldowitz, program chairman at [email protected].
