That’s just the case for Carey Green, the ninth-year head coach of the Liberty Lady Flames, who has raised the program’s standards to an extremely high level. Green has accumulated a 191-65 record on the Liberty bench, good for a winning percentage of .746. He ranked 12th among active NCAA Division I women’s basketball coaches in winning percentage, at the beginning of the season. More importantly, Liberty has won the Big South Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament seven times with Green as head coach. Liberty has totaled 23 or more victories during six of those years, including the 2004-05 season, which saw the Lady Flames reach the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history. Green has actually been to the postseason on 19 occasions as a women’s basketball coach, a span which includes a dozen years as an assistant coach at Clemson. In all but one of the 19 appearances, he has experienced the NCAA Tournament. Last season, the Lady Flames went 19-12 and tied for second place in the Big South. The season was highlighted by a 75-71 win at Virginia, which made the Lady Flames the first visiting team ever to triumph in the brand-new John Paul Jones Arena. Rebounding and defense have always been staples of Green-coached teams, and the 2006-07 Lady Flames were no exception. Liberty outrebounded opponents by an average of 10.6 caroms per game, ranking fifth nationally. The Lady Flames have now been listed among the nation’s top five teams in rebounding margin for four-straight years. Liberty led the nation in the category in both 2003-04 and 2004-05. The 2005-06 season represented one of the best coaching jobs of Green’s career. The Lady Flames had lost the top four scorers from the Sweet 16 squad to graduation. Moreover, freshman Megan Frazee averaged 18.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game through the first 14 games of her collegiate career, but was lost for the remainder of the season due to injury. Yet, Liberty was still able to win 25 games, capture its 10thstraight Big South title and earn its 10th-consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. Green’s efforts were recognized by both the Big South Conference and the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID). Both groups named Green as women’s basketball coach of the year at season’s end. It was the third time he has won each of those honors and marked Green’s second-straight selection as VaSID Coach of the Year. A key late-season conference victory over High Point in 2006 made Green the winningest coach in Big South Conference history. The previous season, Green had passed Rick Reeves as Liberty’s career wins leader. The record-setting victory was just one of the many reasons the 2004-05 year was a special one on Liberty Mountain. A senior-laden Lady Flames team recorded upset wins over No. 4 seed Penn State (78-70) and No. 5 seed DePaul (88-79) in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, becoming just the second team ever to advance to the Sweet 16 as a No. 13 seed. The Lady Flames ended the season with their highest national ranking to date, No. 21 (USA Today/ESPN). Green’s track record shows he has the ability to meet strong challenges. The Lady Flames have recorded two wins over both Virginia and West Virginia and solo victories over No. 19 DePaul, No. 17 Kansas State, No. 25 Penn State, UNLV and Wake Forest during Green’s tenure. The upset victory over No. 25 Virginia in 2003 marked Liberty’s first win over a Top 25 team. His record against conference foes is equally impressive. He led the Lady Flames on a Big South-record 47-game winning streak and currently has a .911 (123-12) winning percentage against conference teams. Green has marched through conference play with one or fewer setbacks five times, while guiding the Lady Flames to two undefeated conference seasons. However, the Dukes have started the 2007-08 season with six-consecutive wins. The team’s biggest win so far has been an 80-55 blowout victory over George Washington, ranked No. 14 nationally at the time. Young has started her senior year well, averaging 19.3 ppg and 9.7 rpg. Freshman Dawn Evans has made an immediate impact, as the 5-7 guard is contributing 15.0 ppg, 4.5 apg and shooting 46.2 percent from beyond the three-point arc. The Dukes have been winning comfortably, with an 11-point triumph over Wake Forest marking the team’s narrowest margin of victory. JMU has also been controlling the boards and is averaging over 25 offensive caroms per game. The Coaching Matchup Liberty Head Coach Carey Green is in his ninth season with the Lady Flames. He owns a 191-65 career record and is the all-time wins leader at Liberty and among Big South women’s basketball coaches. His career winning percentage (.746) ranked 12th among active NCAA Division I women’s basketball coaches at the beginning of the season. Kenny Brooks, who picked up his 100th career win on Nov. 13 at Bucknell, is 10452 in his sixth season at James Madison. He has led the Dukes to consecutive 20-win seasons and garnered the 2006-07 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Coach of the Year award. It was the Lady Flames’ first 100-point output since Carey Green took over as head coach, prior to the 1999-200 season. In fact, Green’s Liberty teams, which have been built around rebounding and defense, have only gone over the 90-point plateau seven times in his nine seasons. TGIF The Lady Flames have gone 3-0 in Friday games so far this season and have exploded for 92 and 100 points in their last two Friday tilts. Liberty’s best-ever season against non-conference foes came in 1997-98, when the Lady Flames went 14-1 outside the Big South. Liberty’s lone non-conference setback that season came to eventual national champion Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Flames are 6-1 in non-conference tilts in the 2007-08 season. Lady Flames to Battle Wide Range of Non-Conference Foes This season, Liberty will face teams from 11 different Division I conferences during its non-conference slate. These include the ACC (North Carolina and Virginia Tech), America East (Binghamton), the Atlantic Sun (East Tennessee State), the Atlantic-10 (Richmond and Xavier), the CAA (George Mason and James Madison), Conference USA (Houston), the MAC (Ball State), the MEAC (North Carolina A&T), the Southern (UNC Greensboro) and the Southland (McNeese State). The Lady Flames will also meet either a Mountain West (UNLV) or Ohio Valley Conference (Austin Peay) opponent in their second game at the Lady Rebel Christmas Classic, on Dec. 21. A Tradition of Success Liberty finished the 2006-07 season with a 19-12 record, sealing the Lady Flames’ 11th-straight winning campaign. Lady Flame seniors Allyson Fasnacht, Egle Smigelskaite and Courtney Watkins have been a part of 76 victories in their three-plus years with the program and have won at a .745 clip. The most common starting five consisted of Michelle Parker, Roli-Ann Nikagbatse, Megan Frazee, Jamie Feagin and Moriah Frazee. The quintet went 4-2 on the year. Green’s most successful starting five turned out to be the one he penciled in for the season’s first five games. Allyson Fasnacht, Courtney Watkins, Megan Frazee, Moriah Frazee and Karolina Piotrkiewicz went 5-0 as a starting unit, including a 75-71 triumph at Virginia. Today’s probable lineup of Allyson Fasnacht, Courtney Watkins, Megan Frazee, Rebecca Lightfoot and Moriah Frazee started together for the first time, Nov. 13 at UNC Greensboro. Liberty is now 6-1 using this combination of two seniors and three juniors to start the game, as the same starting five has taken the floor in each contest this season. 2007-08 Liberty Opponent Highs Scoring at Virginia Tech (11/19/07) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .73 2007-08 Liberty University Women’s Basketball Game Notes at North Carolina A&T (11/16/07) . . . . . . . . . . .64 vs. Houston (11/24/07) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .61 Field Goals Made at Virginia Tech (11/19/07) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .26 at North Carolina A&T (11/16/07) . . . . . . . . . . .23 at Xavier (11/25/07) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .21 Field Goal Attempts vs. Houston (11/24/07) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .74 at North Carolina A&T (11/16/07) . . . . . . . . . . .67 vs. Virginia Union (11/30/07) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .64 Field Goal Percentage at Virginia Tech (11/19/07) . . . . . . . . .43.3 (26-60) at Xavier (11/25/07) . . . . . . . . . . . . . .42.0 (21-50) 3 PT Field Goals Made at Xavier (11/25/07) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .9 vs. McNeese State (11/23/07) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .6 3 PT Field Goal Attempts Liberty in the NCAA Rankings Liberty is ranked in the top 25 nationally in five statistical categories. The Lady Flames are 1-1 versus in-state foes so far, defeating Virginia Union (Nov. 30) and losing at Virginia Tech (Nov. 19). Tonight, Liberty will square off with its third Virginia opponent, James Madison. Later in the season, Liberty will meet Richmond (Jan. 5), George Mason (Jan. 15) and Radford twice (Feb. 6 and March 7). A year ago, the Lady Flames were victorious in six of 10 games against Commonwealth opposition. A Hard Row to Hoe Six of Liberty’s 2006-07 opponents earned spots in the NCAA Tournament (George Washington, James Madison, Marist, Pittsburgh, Texas-Arlington and UNC Asheville), and this season’s schedule appears to be just as difficult. The Lady Flames will face a quartet of 2007 NCAA Tournament teams this season, including Final Four team North Carolina, James Madison, UNC Asheville and Xavier. Liberty has 11 regular-season games slated versus 20-win squads from a season ago. Eight of the contests against 20-win teams will be played away from the Vines Center. The Lady Flames return three starters and nine letterwinners from their 2006-07 squad, which went 19-12 overall and tied for second in the conference with a 10-4 loop mark. Liberty was ousted in the Big South semifinals by Radford, who edged the Lady Flames for first place in the preseason conference poll. The Highlanders, the 2007 Big South Championship runners-up, took 16 of 25 first-place votes and 162 total points. Liberty finished six points back, with 156 points. The Lady Flames received the remaining nine first-place votes. Defending Big South Championship titlist UNC Asheville, the host of the 2008 conference tournament, was voted third with 113 points. High Point, the 2007 Big South regular-season champion, claimed 81 points to take fourth place. The fifth and sixth-place teams finished very closely behind the Panthers. Winthrop was voted fifth with 80 points, while Coastal Carolina took sixth with 77 points. Charleston Southern is predicted to finish seventh, as the Buccaneers tallied 31 points. Frazee, Liberty’s lone representative on the preseason all-conference roster, was a first-team All-Big South honoree a season ago. She led the conference in rebounds (8.5 rpg), free throw percentage (.772) and three-point field goal percentage (.410) as a sophomore. The 6-3 guard/forward also ranked second with 17.2 ppg. She is averaging 10.7 points during the final 20 minutes, as compared to 6.7 points prior to intermission. Frazee’s most recent example of increased second-half production came Nov. 25 at Xavier. She helped the Lady Flames come from 11 points down to win, 61-56, notching 21 of her 28 markers after the break. This phenomenon is not unprecedented for the junior from Xenia, Ohio, whose most memorable collegiate game to date featured a stellar second half. Frazee led Liberty to a 75-71 win at Virginia on Nov. 20, 2006, recording 31 of her 37 points and nine of her 15 boards after halftime at John Paul Jones Arena. Triple the Trouble Liberty sports the only set of triplets currently playing for the same NCAA Division I women’s basketball team--juniors Megan, Molly and Moriah Frazee. The trio plays a key role in the Lady Flames’ success. Through seven games, the Frazees are averaging 40.1 points and 19.1 rebounds per outing, good for 53.9 percent of the Lady Flames’ scoring output and 42.7 percent of the team’s rebounds. One of the Frazees has led Liberty in scoring in each game this season. Molly Frazee paced the squad once, Moriah Frazee has done so twice and Megan Frazee has led the way in the other four contests. Tracking a Pair of Milestones Through 52 career games, Megan Frazee has tossed in 914 points, for an average of 17.6 points per contest. If she continues at her current scoring rate, Frazee is in line to become Liberty’s 11th all-time 1,000-point scorer during the Lady Flames’ second game of the Lady Rebel Christmas Classic in Las Vegas, on Dec. 21. She is currently 11th on the school’s all-time scoring list. Frazee is also nearing 500 rebounds. She has pulled down 466 boards in her career, good for an average of 9.0 rpg. Frazee is on pace to collect her 500th board on Dec. 20, against Ball State in the opening game of the Lady Rebel Christmas Classic. She would become the 19th member of Liberty’s 500-rebound club and the sixth Lady Flame ever to post 1,000 points and 500 caroms in her career. Liberty’s Iron Woman Liberty senior shooting guard Courtney Watkins has yet to miss a contest, in the first three-plus seasons of her Lady Flame career. Her consecutive games played streak currently sits at 102. Liberty’s contest against Houston on Nov. 24 was Watkins’ 100th-consecutive game played for the Lady Flames. If she can stay healthy, she is on track to break 2007 graduate Michelle Parker’s Liberty and Big South records for career games played during the Lady Flames’ second game at the Big South Women’s Basketball Championship. Parker finished with 125 career games played. Juniors Molly and Moriah Frazee have also played in every game since they have been a part of the Liberty roster. Each of them has appeared in 69-straight contests. Best in the Big South Liberty currently leads all Big South teams in scoring (74.4 ppg), scoring margin (+20.3), free throw percentage (.745), field goal percentage (.464), field goal percentage defense (.311), three-point field goal percentage (.409), three-point field goal percentage defense (.234), rebounding margin (+11.0), assists (14.86 apg), assist-toturnover ratio (0.85) and defensive rebounds (30.14 rpg). Individually, Megan Frazee paces the conference in rebounding (9.3 rpg), free throw percentage (.895) and offensive rebounds 3.57 rpg). Courtney Watkins is tops among Big South players in both field goal percentage (.538) and three-point field goal percentage (.526). Liberty is shooting 74.5 percent at the free throw line, a mark superior to the school record of 71.7 percent, acheived in 1997-98. Megan Frazee is leading the way, connecting on 89.5 percent of her free throws. She sank a career-best 18-consecutive charity tosses at one point earlier this season and is currently on a streak of 10-straight made foul shots. Frazee was 9-for-10 from the foul line against Houston on Nov. 24, helping Liberty make 32 free throws as a team. The Lady Flames missed the school record for made free throws in a game by a single shot. Liberty drilled 33 foul shots against Radford on Feb. 24, 2001. Frazee has only scored nine or fewer points on four occasions at Liberty, and the Ohioan has never done so in consecutive outings. Miss Consistency, Part 2 Senior Courtney Watkins is giving her team regular scoring punch from the backcourt this season. She is third on the team with 10.4 ppg and has posted five doubledigit scoring efforts in seven games. It has truly been a breakthrough season for Watkins, who had scored 10 or more points only 10 times in 95 career outings, prior to this season. Watkins has also been efficient with her shooting opportunities this season. She is currently posting career-high marks for both field goal percentage (.538) and three-point field goal percentage (.526). Rewriting the Record Book Liberty set or tied a number of records during its 100-29 victory over Virginia Union on Friday. Here is a look at some of the most notable accomplishments from the contest: -- The Lady Flames’ field goal percentage (.646, 42-65) set new team and Vines Center single-game records. -- Liberty’s 11 three-pointers equaled the most the Lady Flames have ever made in a game at the Vines Center. -- Liberty’s 33 assists set a program NCAA Division I record. -- Moriah Frazee went 8-for-8 from the field to establish a new Vines Center record for single-game field goal percentage. -- Liberty’s 100 points marked the eighth time in program history the Lady Flames have scored in triple digits. Liberty, which shot 51.9 percent from the field during the opening 20 minutes, took a 41-34 lead into the locker room. The homestanding Aggies whittled away at the Liberty advantage throughout the second half. A 13-5 surge cut the deficit to a single point, 53-52, with 13:10 left. A Ta’Wuana Cook three-pointer and two Lamona Smalley foul shots put North Carolina A&T ahead, 59-57, at 4:29. Liberty responded with a 10-0 run, spanning the next 4:09 and featuring a Courtney Watkins triple and an Allyson Fasnacht three-point play. Watkins’ three-pointer gave the Lady Flames the lead for good. A Megan Frazee lay-up finished the span and lifted the Lady Flames to a 67-59 edge with just 37 seconds left. The Aggies quickly trimmed the margin to three points, after a Brittany Taylor-James three-pointer and a Jaleesa Sams layup. Liberty opened up a 10-point halftime lead at Virginia Tech, but the Hokies came out of the intermission on a 23-6 run, propelling them to a 73-68 decision at Cassell Coliseum. Virginia Tech improved to 14-0 all-time versus Liberty. The Hokies controlled the early part of the game, and a 7-0 run capped by a Brittany Cook layup at 12:00 put them on top, 16-9. Six different Lady Flames scored during their most effective stretch of the first half, a 13-2 surge. Rachel McLeod’s close-range basket lifted Liberty to a 38-28 advantage, and the Lady Flames took the same 10point edge (40-30) into the locker room. It took the Hokies just 3:14 to erase Liberty’s lead, and the home team had built a 53-46 edge, a little over six minutes into the half. The Lady Flames battled back and briefly retook the lead at the 3:44 mark, when Moriah Frazee’s layup made the count 62-61, Liberty. The score was deadlocked at 64 apiece when an intentional foul call paved the way for a four-point Hokie possession. The Lady Flames were unable to get any closer the rest of the way, and Virginia Tech made three-of-four charity tosses in the final minute to seal its 73-68 triumph. The Hokies received 29 points from freshman Andrea Barbour and 22 markers from Brittany Cook. Liberty’s Moriah Frazee contributed 14 points and eight rebounds.
