HEAD COACH RITCHIE McKAY
Ritchie McKay was named
the seventh men’s basketball head coach on March
26, 2007.
Liberty marks McKay’s fifth
head coaching stint, and his
first east of the Mississippi,
after stops in the Big Sky,
Mountain West, Pac-10 and WAC conferences.
McKay, 42, comes to Liberty from New
Mexico, where he spent five seasons at the
helm of the Lobos’ basketball program
(2003-07), highlighted by a Mountain West
Conference (MWC) championship in 2005.
With a 26-7 record, the conference championship earned New Mexico its first NCAA
Tournament appearance in six years and
the program’s first conference title since
1996.
Overall at New Mexico, McKay sported an
82-69 coaching record over five seasons,
including the 2005 campaign, where the
team’s 26 victories were the second-highest total in program’s 103-year history.
McKay posted a 37-23 record (.627) at
Colorado State, which included a 1999
National Invitational Tournament (NIT)
berth. The Rams defeated Mississippi State
and in-state rival Colorado at the event,
before losing to eventual NIT Tournament
champion California.
The 1999-2000 season featured the first
year of play for CSU in the Mountain West
Conference, and the Rams logged an 1812 record and a fourth-place conference
finish.
A pair of victories over nationally-ranked
opponents - the first time the program had
accomplished the feat at Colorado State in
a decade - and capturing the title at the
second annual Pearl Harbor Classic in
Hawaii were some of the highlights during
the season. College Hoops Insider magazine noticed the success of the 2000 Rams
and tabbed McKay as its MWC Coach of
the Year.
Before arriving on the Colorado State campus, McKay began his head coaching
career when he was named the head
coach at Portland State. McKay started with
the Vikings in 1995, helping revive a program which had been dormant for 15
years. McKay led the program to nine victories in the school's first season of competition (1996-97) since the early 1980s.
After the initial season at Portland State,
McKay was named one of six finalists for
the Clair Bee Award, given annually to the
coach with the most influence and innovation in the game of basketball. Two other
finalists for the honor that year were Dean
Smith of North Carolina and Mike
Krzyzewski of Duke. The 1997-98 Portland
State team followed with a 15-12 mark and
a third-place finish in the Big Sky
Conference.
Game Preview
Liberty continues a three-game homestand when the Niagara Purple
Eagles enter the confines of the Vines Center on Saturday evening. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
Tonight’s contest is the return trip from last season’s O’Reilly ESPNU
BracketBusters game when the two teams faced off against in Niagara,
N.Y. As part of the contract, Big South officials worked the contest in
Niagara last season. In compliance with the contract, tonight’s game will
feature officials from Niagara’s conference, the Metro Atlantic Athletic
Conference (MAAC).
Saturday’s contest will air on the Flames Sports Network (flagship WRVL
88.3 FM) with Jerry Edwards providing play-by-play. Additionally, an
Internet audio broadcast on LibertyFlames.com will be available. The
game will be televised on the Flames Television Network (Liberty
Channel) with Ray Jones and Tim Scarborough calling the action.
Samantha Steele will report from the sidelines. Additionally, an Internet
video webcast on the BigSouthSports.com will be available (a Big South
EDGE subscription is required).
Liberty Update
Liberty enters tonight’s contest on the heels of an impressive 91-67 home
victory over Longwood on Tuesday. Alex McLean tallied a season-high
33 points, a national high for the day, while pulling down 11 rebounds for
his third double-double this season.
The Flames entered the Longwood game coming off an 80-54 setback at
Kentucky on Nov. 21. The Wildcats extended a close first half lead to a
comfortable advantage in the second stanza. McLean led Liberty with 15
points and five rebounds. Anthony Smith chipped in 10 points, while
TeeJay Bannister dished out a game-high nine assists in the losing cause.

Tonight’s contest is the second all-time meeting between the two schools
in basketball. Niagara leads the series, 1-0. The lone contest took place

Tonight marks the first time head coach Ritchie McKay has faced a current member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Liberty vs. the MAAC
The Flames are 2-5 all-time against the current members of the MAAC.
Their most recent victory came during the 2005-06 season, when Liberty
won at Marist, 69-67. Liberty’s other victory over a member of the MAAC
was on Nov. 27, 2003, when the Flames defeated Canisius in the Great
Alaska Shootout. The last MAAC member to play inside the Vines
Center was Marist on Jan. 10, 2006. The Red Foxes topped the

The only other time Liberty faced Niagara was following a contest with
Longwood. Last season, Liberty played at Longwood, followed by a

Anthony Smith Sets Another Record
Anthony Smith set a Big South single-game record shooting 87.5 percent from three-point range versus Longwood (7-of-8) on Tuesday. The
conference record is based on a minimum seven three-point field goals
made.
Liberty Honors Dr. Falwell Inside the Vines Center
In its continuing efforts to honor Dr. Jerry Falwell, the Liberty athletics
department unveiled a new memorial to the University’s founder and
former chancellor.
During Wednesday’s Convocation, inside the Vines Center, Liberty’s
Director of Athletics Jeff Barber announced that the number 71 will
hang from the rafters on a jersey to signify Dr. Falwell’s impact on
Liberty University and its athletics department.
The honoring of Dr. Falwell’s thumbprint on the athletics department
began before the passing of the renowned visionary. During
Homecoming 2006, Liberty retired the first ever football jersey in Dr.
Falwell’s honor. After Dr. Falwell’s passing, a new tradition began with
the start of the 2007 football season. Prior to the start of every home
football game, a giant flag with the number 71 is hoisted up the flagpole
in a mini-pregame ceremony. The number 71 signifies the year, 1971,
when Liberty first opened its doors.

Packing Them In
There were 21,298 fans that attended the Nov. 21 contest at Kentucky,
marking the second-highest attended Liberty men’s basketball game.
When Liberty last played in the Rupp Arena, 22,717 fans attended the
contest, marking the largest crowd to ever witness a Liberty men’s basketball game.
The previous record was 19,718 when the Flames faced North Carolina
in the first round of the 1994 NCAA Tournament. That game was played
in the USAir Arena in Landover, Md.
Anthony Smith Reaches 700-Career Points
Junior Anthony Smith became the 28th player in Liberty history to score
700 career points when he tallied 23 points against Longwood on
Tuesday. Smith currently has 721 career markers.
Having East Carolina’s Number
On Nov. 17, Liberty defeated East Carolina for the second-straight season. On Dec. 2, 2006, the Flames topped the Pirates, 64-56. The win
served as Liberty’s first ever against East Carolina in six tries and the
program’s first win against a member of Conference USA.
The 55-53 victory over the Pirates served as the program’s second alltime win over a Conference USA program.

Kyle Ohman Stepping Up
Sophmore Kyle Ohman has scored 45 points through the Flames’ first
seven games this season. Last year, Ohman only scored eight points
during Liberty’s 31 total games. Ohman was held scoreless in Liberty’s
win over East Carolina on Nov. 17. Ohman was held scoreless again at
Kentucky on Nov. 21 after battling illness all day.
Flames Played Seven Games in November
Liberty played seven games in the month of November. That is the most
games the Flames have played in November since the 1979-80 season. That year Liberty participated in eight contests in November on
their way to a 28-11 record and the NCCAA National Championship.

Senior Alex McLean grabbed 8.9 rebounds per game last season. The
figure was the best rebounding season by a Flame since Jason Dixon
grabbed 9.0 caroms per contest during the 1995 campaign.
Playing Sweet Music
Senior Alex McLean did not play basketball in high school. Standing only
at 6-2 as a high school senior, the Bay Shore, N.Y., native played bass,
piano and drums in the school band. McLean is a concert bassist who
turned down the opportunity to study music at numerous schools on
scholarship, including Cal-Berkley and Hofstra, as well as, receiving
interest from Julliard, in favor of basketball.
Anthony Smith Chosen to Honor a Visionary
Junior Anthony Smith was one of 10 student-athletes who served as an
honorary pallbearer for the late Liberty University Founder and
Chancellor, Dr. Jerry Falwell. Ten Liberty University student-athletes
served as honorable pallbearers at the May 22 funeral, reflecting on Dr.
Falwell’s love for athletics.
Road Woes
The Flames have lost 27 of their last 31 road games, dating back to the
start of the 2005-06 season. Three of the wins during that span came last
season. A 66-63 victory at Charleston Southern on Jan. 22, a 118-108
victory at VMI on Feb. 21 and a 64-48 win at Radford on Feb. 24. The
victory in Lexington was the Flames first since Dec. 7, 1991, and the win
at Radford was Liberty’s first since Feb. 22, 1997. The fourth road win
was a 55-53 triumph at East Carolina on Nov. 17.
TeeJay Bannister Named Top Newcomer to the Big South
TeeJay Bannister, a transfer from Virginia, was named by the Sporting
News as the top newcomer in the Big South Conference. This is the second-straight year a member of the Flames has earned such an honor.
Last season, Dwight Brewington, a transfer from Providence, earned the
same accolade from CBS Sportsline.com.
Making the List
Alex McLean was named to the Big South preseason all-conference
team in Lindy’s and Athlon Sports’ publications. McLean averaged 14.5
points per game, while finishing second in the conference with 8.9
rebounds per game, last season.
Anthony Smith joined McLean on the Lindy’s preseason all-conference
team. Smith averaged 11.4 points and 3.3 rebounds per game, while
being the only member of the team to start every game, last season.
TeeJay Bannister and His Assists
TeeJay Bannister has played two games inside the Vines Center, including an exhibition game against Barton. Bannister has dished out 25
assists during those two contests. He had 14 against Barton and 11 versus Longwood.
November Record
Overall, Liberty has posted a 70-68 record in November, including 48-15 at home, 10-38 on the road
and a 12-15 mark at a neutral location, in the 11th month of the year. Since the 2000-01 season,
Ritchie McKay has a 24-11 record in the month of November.
December Record
Overall, Liberty has posted a 69-83 record, 47-25 at home, 17-49 on the road and 6-11 at a neutral
location during the month.Since the 2000-01 season, Ritchie McKay has a 32-20 record in the month
of December.
Flames Tabbed to Finish Sixth in Big South
The Liberty Flames were selected to finish sixth out of eight teams in the Big South Conference for
the 2007-08 season, as voted on by the conference’s head coaches, sports information directors
and members of the media.
Liberty is coming off a 14-17 season and a third-place finish in the Big South. The Flames went 8-6
in conference play a year ago, after being picked to finish fifth in last year’s preseason poll.
High Point (216) edged out three-time defending conference champion Winthrop (214) by a narrow
margin to be tabbed preseason favorite to win the conference championship.
The voting panel agreed on the top two choices, but spots three through six were closely bunched.
VMI (147) was picked to finish third, while Coastal Carolina (134 points) was picked to finish in the
fourth position. UNC Asheville (119) found themselves picked fifth, with Liberty (108) in the sixth
position.
Charleston Southern (63) and Radford (43) rounded out the preseason poll.
Alex McLean Scores 500th Career Point
Alex McLean tallied 12 points in the Flames’ Nov. 17 win over East Carolina. McLean has now
scored 558 points during his Liberty career, making the senior from Bay Shore, N.Y., the 46th player in program history to reach the 500-point milestone.
Foul Trouble
Senior TeeJay Bannister fouled out of the first three games in which he has appeared this season.
Bannister collected four fouls in the other three games he appeared in for Liberty. In the previous
76 career games in which he has appeared, Bannister fouled out only five times. All 76 of those
games were played when Bannister was enrolled at Virginia.
Away From Home
Liberty started the year playing five of its first six games away from the Vines Center. The last time
the Flames started a season playing five of six games outside of Lynchburg was the 2001-02 season.
That season, the Flames played at Vanderbilt, Appalachian State and at the Hawaii Pacific
Thanksgiving Classic. Liberty went 1-5 during that span, on its way to a 5-25 season.
Anthony Smith’s Starting Streak
Junior Anthony Smith has started 40-straight contests, dating back to his freshman year. The current streak started on Feb. 25, 2006, when Liberty traveled to High Point.
The streak is the longest for a Flame since Larry Blair started 65-straight contests, a streak that
spanned three seasons. Blair’s streak started on Jan. 1, 2005, at Seton Hall and was snapped when
he was left out of the starting lineup at High Point on Jan. 17, 2007.
Anthony Smith’s Rebounds Are Up
Junior Anthony Smith is pulling nearly two more rebounds per game this season than last year (5.2
to 3.3). Smith’s rebound numbers are up, but his assists are down. Last season, Smith dished out
2.4 assists per game. So far this season he is only tallying 1.0 assist per contest.
Rell Porter Has Eye on 100 Career Games
Senior Rell Porter has currently played in 96 contests during his Liberty career. The Liberty record
for games played is 122, set by Larry Blair last year. Porter will become the 25th player in program
history to appear in 100 career games. Should Porter appear in every game this year, he will reach
120 during the quarterfinal of the Big South Championship, which would place him tied for second
with Karl Hess (1977-1980) and Steve Isaacs (1980-83). The Big South record is 123, set last season by Winthrop’s Craig Bradshaw and Philip Williams.
Flames Facing New Foes This Year
Liberty's season opener against San Diego State was the first game of four this season versus an
opponent that Liberty had never previously faced. In addition to the Aztecs, Liberty’s non-conference
schedule has or will pit the Flames up against Portland, Coker and Nyack, all first-time Liberty opponents on the hardwood.
McKay Inks Highly Anticipated Recruiting Class
In his first recruiting class at Liberty, head men’s basketball coach Ritchie McKay and staff have
signed Seth Curry, Brolin Floyd, Sammy Jackson, Mike Lewis, Carter McMasters and Austin Smith
to national letters of intent for the 2008-09 academic year.
“I can’t remember ever having a class like the one we were able to attract our first year at Liberty,”
said McKay, who has been a head coach in the Pac-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic and Big
Sky Conferences.
“Typically it takes a little bit of time to establish yourself in an unfamiliar region of the country,”
added McKay. “What Liberty University offers a student-athlete is really reflected in the caliber
of the individual and the caliber of the player we were able to sign.”
Curry is the son of one of the NBA’s most prolific three-point shooters, Dell Curry. A 6-0 combo guard
from Charlotte, N.C., Curry has been a huge piece to Charlotte Christian’s success over the past few
years. As a junior, Curry averaged 13.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game for
a team that had four starters in double figures in scoring.
Last season, Curry shot 50 percent from the field, earning CISAA all-conference honors. In his
three years on the varsity squad, Charlotte Christian has amassed an 83-15 record, reaching
the state final in 2006.
“Seth is a great kid and will make a great impact at Liberty as a freshman under the leadership
and guidance of Coach McKay,” stated Charlotte Christian head coach Shonn Brown. “Liberty
is getting someone special.”
Curry choose Liberty over his father’s alma mater, Virginia Tech, and Davidson, where his
older brother Stephen currently is playing, earning an All-American honors.
“I would have recruited Seth at any level,” said McKay. “He is a versatile guard who has a tremendous future ahead of him. Without question, he will make an immediate impact on our team and program.”
Floyd hails from Ocala, Fla., and plays for Shores Christian School. As a junior, the 6-5, 210-pound
guard, averaged 17.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.2 steals, leading Shores Christian to
the NACA National Championship game.
Floyd, a McDonald’s All-America nominee, was MVP of his AAU Florida Elite team, while also
playing for Nike Team Florida during the summer of 2007. In the summer of 2006, Floyd was
the MVP of Running Rattlers AAU squad, which won the State Championship.
“I am excited about him going to Liberty,” said Shores Christian head coach Danny Smith. “He
loves the family atmosphere at Liberty and he loves the relationship he has developed with
Coach McKay.”Floyd chose the Flames over Clemson, Florida State, Miami and Western Kentucky,
among others.
“When you talk about finding a diamond in the rough, you can put a picture next to Brolin’s
name,” stated McKay. “Dale Layer came across Brolin out of obscurity in talent laden Central
Florida.
“I can’t tell you how excited I am that Brolin will be in a Liberty Flames uniform. He has a great
body, size, strength and athleticism and a desire to be great. Along with a few other freshmen,
I anticipate Brolin to have a major immediate impact on our team and program.”
Jackson is a 6-5 forward out of Jacksonville Junior College in Jacksonville, Texas. The
Arlington, Texas native is currently playing his second year of junior college ball, after prepping
at Bowie High School.
As a freshman last season, Jackson averaged 9.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, while
shooting 52 percent from the floor and 53 percent from three-point range. Starting 27 games
for Jacksonville, Jackson earned honorable mention all-region honors. Through the first five
game of this season, Jackson is averaging 10.4 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
“Sammy is a tremendous young man with high character and work ethic,” said Jacksonville
Junior College head coach Greg Young. “He is competitive, tough and I enjoy being around
him. Liberty is a great fit for Sammy and both he and his family are excited about the blessing
of playing for Coach McKay and his staff.”
“Sammy is an undersized forward who has the skill of a guard, but the toughness of a center,
creating one of those match-up nightmares,” said McKay. “Sammy is the only JC player we
recruited, because we wanted to build our program with youth. But we could not pass up on his
maturity, leadership ability and the uniqueness in regards to his attributes. We expect him to
make an immediate contribution.”
Lewis signs with the Flames out of Charis Prep in Goldsboro, N.C., the same prep school
Where Liberty’s Armon Jones spent the 2006 season. Lewis, a 5-7 guard from Upper Marlboro,
Md., was a four-year starter at Suitland, averaging 18.4 points, 7.0 assists and 3.0 steals per
game as a senior. Lewis led Suitland to a 22-5 record as a senior, falling in the regional
championship game to Eleanor Roosevelt, 55-53.
Last season at Charis Prep, Lewis averaged 14.0 points per game, while his assist to turnover
ratio was 3-1.
“I am very pleased Mike is going to continue his academic endeavors at Liberty and his athletic
career under Coach McKay,” said Charis Prep head coach Carlos Peralta. “I know Mike will
benefit greatly from both. Mike is a very good point guard and he will have a great career at
Liberty, helping continue its success on the court.”
“Mike reminds of one those spark plugs on the court,” said McKay. “I couldn’t pass up on him.
Mike is tough, has the ability to shoot, find open guys and stretch the defense. Mike will
become a fan favorite, because his perceived size limitation will be overcome by the size of his
heart and abilities.”
McMasters hails from Chattanooga, Tenn., where he will be a 2008 graduate of Grace
Academy. The 6-11 forward averaged 14.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 5.0 blocks per game as
a junior at Grace, helping his team to the regional finals. The all-state honoree alters the
game, evident by his 20 shots redirected last season.
“Carter alters the game,” said Grace Academy head coach Jon Mattheiss. “Teams would stop
shooting around him. Liberty has themselves a high-quality player, one who will be even better
at the collegiate level than he has in high school.”
McMasters picked Liberty over Auburn, Chattanooga, Clemson, Kentucky, Michigan, Purdue,
Virginia and Virginia Tech, among other programs.
“When we first got to Liberty, we were told by many that you couldn’t shoot for the stars,” said
McKay. “We felt with our system and the immediate need at Carter’s position, we would hit a
home run by signing him. Carter is a tremendous offensively skilled player with great passing
ability, who can stretch a defense. He is a good shot blocker with great timing. We are elated
to have someone of his caliber be a part of our family, as we help carry this program forward
and establish a tradition.”
Smith, a 6-9 forward from Tucson, Ariz., transferred to Ironwood Ridge from Mountain View.
While at Mountain View as junior, Smith averaged 11.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.
Smith picked Liberty after being pursued by Pepperdine, Richmond, San Francisco and
Washington State.
“I have known Austin for a few years and I really trust him,” said McKay. “He has natural ability
and athleticism that our fans will really like. He is skilled, can shoot the ball, has a great work
ethic and the fact we can attract Austin from Tucson to Lynchburg, speaks to Liberty University
and all it has to offer.”
“In all my years of coaching, God’s sovereignty allowed us to get student-athletes to help our
program advance, but also allowed us to help develop these individuals as students, players
and men,” commented McKay.

opener as San Diego State got hot at the
right time to defeat the Flames, 62-50, on
the opening evening of Fresno State’s
World Vision Classic, at the World Vision
Classic. The contest started out as a defensive juggernaut. San Diego staked themselves to a 7-4 lead on a three-point basket
by Tim Shelton at the 16:31 mark. Neither
team added to its point total over the next
two minutes until Rell Porter hit the first end
of two free throws for the Flames, cutting
the lead to 7-5 at 14:43. Billy White hit a
jumper on the next possession to push the
lead to 9-5 for the Aztecs. Once again, neither squad could find the basket until the
9:48 mark when Anthony Smith hit a threepoint bucket, cutting the lead to 9-8 with
9:48 left in the opening period.Smith then
stole the ball from Kyle Spain, which led to
TeeJay Bannister dishing an assist to
Porter to give Liberty its first lead of the
game, 10-9, with 8:55 remaining. San
Diego State bounced back with six-straight
points, with the run being capped by a Billy
White dunk to take a 15-10 lead with 5:59
remaining. Liberty cut the lead back to two
points, 15-13, on a Kyle Ohman three-point
basket on the very next position. The
Aztecs then made a push near the end of
the half, taking a 10-point advantage, 2717, courtesy of a 12-4 spurt, finished by a
three-point bucket by Lorrenzo Wade with
45 seconds left in the first half. Fresno
State got hot to start the second half, going
on a 14-3 run capped by a Ryan Amoroso
jumper, extending its lead to 43-22, with
12:50 remaining. The Aztecs and the
Flames went back and forth for the remainder of the game, concluding with a Liberty
6-0 run to finish the game, 62-50. The
Flames were led by Porter who tied a
career-best with 14 points. Smith assisted
with 11 points, while Bannister chipped in
seven points in the losing cause. Alex
McLean led all rebounders with seven caroms.
Game 2
Fresno, Calif.
Liberty kept the game close throughout, but
was never able to completely overcome
homestanding Fresno State, falling to the
Bulldogs, 71-62, at the Save Mart Center
on the second day of the World Vision
Classic. Liberty started the evening hot, as
they jumped out to a seven-point advantage, 15-8, courtesy of an Alex McLean
bucket at the 10:36 mark. Fresno State
regained the lead, 16-15, after a Hector
Hernandez bucket off a Kevin Bell pass
with 6:53 remaining, capping a 7-0 run. The
Bulldogs extended their narrow lead to four
points, 21-17, after a Bryan Harvey threepoint basket with 5:43 remaining. Liberty
pulled back within one point after an
Anthony Smith jumper and a Rell Porter
bucket at the 3:25 mark, cutting the lead,
22-21. Fresno State exploded and ended
the half on an 8-2 run, including two threepoint baskets by Eddie Miller, going into the
intermission with a 30-23 lead. Fresno
State came out of the break and extended
its lead to 12, courtesy of a Dwight O’Neil
lay-up with 17:25 left in the contest, giving
the Bulldogs the 37-25 advantage. Liberty
continued to keep the game close, cutting
the lead back down to five, 55-50, in front
of the home standing crowd, when B.J.
Jenkins hit the front end of a two-shot free
throw. The made shot from the charity strip
capped an 8-2 run with 3:44 remaining in
the game. Fresno State bounced right
back, thanks in part to the free throw shooting of Bell and Harvey. The duo went 11-of12 from the line to close out the game on
16-7 run, giving Fresno Stats the 71-62
win. Smith led the Flames with 17 points on
7-of-14 shooting, and Jenkins added 16
points and a team-high four assists.
McLean collected his first double-double of
the season and 13th of his career, scoring
10 points and grabbing a game-high 14
rebounds.

Liberty fell in its final game of Fresno
State’s World Vision Classic to the Portland
Pilots, 73-62, inside the Save Mart Center.
In a closely play first half, the Pilots held
the advantage on the scoreboard the
majority of the period. The Pilots drew first
blood, taking a quick 4-0 lead after a Luke
Sikma jumper at 17:47. After pushing the
led to 8-4 at the 16:18 mark on another
Sikma basket, Liberty tied the game, 8-8,
for the first time since the opening tip-off,
when TeeJay Bannister scored coming out
of the first media timeout, with 15:17
remaining in the opening stanza. After a
turnover by Portland’s Kramer Knutson,
guard Anthony Smith gave Liberty its first
lead of the contest with a driving lay-up at
14:35, for a 10-8 Flames’ advantage. The
Pilots came roaring back with a 12-3 run, to
take a 20-13 lead, capped by a wide-open
three-point bucket by Nik Raivio at 11:01.
The Flames fought back on the heels of a
13-5 run, cutting the lead to 32-31 with 3:12
remaining. Two Robin Smeulders’ free
throws with 35 seconds left sent the Pilots
into intermission with a 34-31 advantage.
Sloppy play by the Flames, including three
turnovers, helped the Pilots extend its lead
to nine points, 53-44, with 10:58 remaining.
Portland later extended its lead to 63-50 on
a three-point bucket by Jared Stohl, with
7:58 remaining. Liberty was able to trim the
Pilot lead back to nine points, 66-57, on a
Smith layup with 2:32 remaining. It was as
close as the Flames would get in the contest’s closing minutes, as Portland closed
out the game with a double-digit victory, 7362. McLean led the Flames by collecting
his second-straight double-double with 19
points and 10 rebounds.
Game 4
Lynchburg, Va.
After only being back in Lynchburg for
roughly 24 hours, the Liberty Flames
showed no signs of fatigue, as they cruised
to a 64-49 victory over the Coker Cobras,
inside the Vines Center. Due to a canceled
flight on Sunday night in Fresno, following
the Flames’ trip west for Fresno State’s
World Vision Classic, Liberty’s squad was
not fully back home until 6 p.m., on Monday
night. Early in the game, Coker’s Lukas
Varaga picked the pocket of B.J. Jenkins
on the first possession of the contest, leading to a basket to stake Cobras to a quick
2-0 lead. But, the advantage was shortlived as the Flames quickly shifted into
high-gear. Liberty raced to a 22-6 lead,
courtesy of a 22-4 run, capped by an
Anthony Smith bucket at 9:47. The Cobras
halted the run with a three-point basket by
Ryan Fulwood at the 9:32 mark, cutting the
score to 22-9. The Flames cruised down
the court on the next possession, matching
the three-point bucket with a Kyle Ohman
marker at 9:10, pushing the score to 25-9.
Coker temporarily halted the streaking
Flames, going on a 10-2 run, which included three-point buckets by Fulwood and
Blake Terrell. The quick surge was capped
by a Sebastian Lacayo basket in the paint
at 6:12, cutting Liberty’s advantage to
points, 29-19. Both squads went point-forpoint for the final six minutes of the first
stanza. Rell Porter grabbed an offensive
rebound off a Smith miss and stuck it back,
allowing the Flames to enter the intermission with a 41-30 lead. The Flames turned
up the heat on the Cobras exiting halftime,
quickly extending the lead to 53-35, at
13:56 remaining, courtesy of two Ohman
three-point buckets and five-straight points
by Alex McLean. Ohman continued his hot
shooting, hitting two more three-point buckets, pushing the Flames’ lead to 61-42 with
6:06 left in the contest. Coker managed a
7-1 spurt, capped by another Fulwood
three pointer, at 3:28. And that would be as
close as the Cobras would get, as Coker
managed just one point over the remaining
three minutes of play. Smith led the way
with a game-high 15 points and 11
rebounds. Smith’s double-double is his first
of the year and third of his career. Ohman,
who started his first collegiate game, set
career highs with 15 points, including
three-point field goals.

Alex McLean rebounded a TeeJay
Bannister miss and laid the game-winning
bucket in with eight-tenths of a second
remaining, sending Liberty to a 55-53 victory over East Carolina, Saturday night
inside the Minges Coliseum. Liberty led the
entire game until the closing second of the
contest. Liberty milked the clock with under
a minute to play, but an Anthony Smith
miss from behind the arc at the shot clock’s
expiration fell right into the hands of Brock
Young, the freshman guard for the Pirates.
Young pushed ball down the court on a fast
break, and was fouled by McLean in the
lane with 18 seconds remaining. Young
went to the line for two shots, sinking the
first, tying the game, 53-53. Liberty called a
timeout in between attempts and the freeze
worked, as Young missed his second
attempt. McLean grabbed the rebound and
sent the outlet pass to Bannister with 16
seconds on the clock. Bannister pushed
the ball toward the hole, setting the stage
for the buzzer beater. Bannister dribble
penetrated and shot a fade away in the
lane with three seconds left. McLean and
Blair battled for the rebound, but McLean
had inside position. The Liberty senior then
laid in the game winner with eight-tenths of
a second remaining, sending the Flames to
a 55-53 victory. Jenkins led Liberty with a
career-high 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting.

The Kentucky Wildcats had two weeks to
mull over their 84-68 loss to Gardner-Webb
in the 2K College Sports Classic. The time
off worked against the Flames, as Liberty
fell, 80-54, to Kentucky in its first game
since the setback, inside the famed Rupp
Arena. With the bad taste of its last contest
against Gardner-Webb still in its mouth,
Kentucky wasted no time getting started,
opening the contest on a 12-2 run. The
burst was finished off by Ramel Bradley’s
second three-point bucket at the 14:55
mark. Liberty got things going with a little
spurt of its own, cutting the lead down to
eight, 20-12, with 6:58 remaining. The
Flames received two free throws from
Russell Monroe, another from TeeJay
Bannister and Alex McLean, followed by
buckets from Anthony Smith and McLean
during the scoring span. Liberty continued
to trim the margin, getting it to seven, 2417, after a Porter three-point bucket, followed by a McLean lay up at 3:27. But that
would be as close as the Flames would
get. Kentucky closed out the half on a 12-4
run, capped by a Joe Crawford three-point
bucket with 34 seconds left in the first stanza, taking a 36-21 lead into the break. The
Wildcats came out of the intermission gunning, quickly extending their lead to 17
when Patterson hit two free throws at
17:20, pushing the score to 42-25. The
Flames never got closer, falling by 26
points. The Flames were led by McLean’s
15 points and five rebounds. Smith chipped
in 10 points, while B.J. Jenkins scored nine
points and grabbed four rebounds. Porter
added eight points and grabbed five of the
Flames’ 15 offensive rebounds.

After starting the season with five of its first
six contests away from the friendly confines
of the Vines Center, Liberty fired on all cylinders in the Flames first home game in two
weeks, cruising to a 91-67 victory over the
Longwood Lancers Tuesday night. From the
opening tip, Liberty controlled the contest.
Alex McLean scored nine points in the first
four minutes helping the Flames spring to
an early 14-2 advantage. A TeeJay
Bannister three-point bucket just 4:07 into
the contest capped the opening scoring
burst. Anthony Smith scored 11-straight
points for the Flames, increasing the Liberty
lead to 25-10, with 11:06 remaining in the
opening stanza. Longwood cut the lead
down to nine, courtesy of a 10-4 run, finished by a made free throw by Ryan Bogan,
with 7:50 left in the firsthalf. The Flames
responded with a 12-2 spurt of their own to
push their lead to 20 points, their largest of
the opening stanza at 42-22, with 3:05
remaining. Over the half’s final three minutes, Longwood was only able to cut the
Flames’ advantage by a point to 46-27 at the
break. The Flames started the second half
by outscoring the Lancers, 17-9. McLean
capped the surge by hitting the second of
two foul shots on a trip to the charity strip
with 13:53 left to up the Liberty lead to 6336. The Flames continued to control the
game, reaching its biggest lead of the game,
35, on a three-point bucket by Kyle Ohman
with 5:47 remaining to make it, 85-50. After
Bogan connected on two free throws,
Nathan Campbell connected on his first shot
of the season, collecting his first collegiate
points with 5:04 left in the game, pushing
the lead back to 35 at 87-52. During the
game’s final five minutes, Longwood held a
15-4 scoring advantage, but it wasn’t
enough in a 91-67 Flames’ victory. McLean
paced Liberty with his third double-double of
the year and 15th of his career. The senior
scored 33 points and grabbed 11 caroms,
both game highs
