Outstanding Library Team and
Digital Innovation of the Year
W
elcome to the Spring
edition of the Library
newsletter.
I am delighted to report that we have
been shortlisted for the Times Higher
Education Leadership and Management
Awards in two categories this year,
“Outstanding Library Team” and “Digital
Innovation of the Year”, the latter jointly
with BSMS for our groundbreaking
“SABRE” discovery service:
sabre.sussex.ac.uk. We will find out
how we get on at an award ceremony in
London on 18 June 2015.
We’d like to wish you all the very best
in the run up to final examinations and
end of year assessments. Don’t forget
that the Library offers workshops on
‘Literature searching for projects and
dissertations’ that can be booked at:
www.sussex.ac.uk/library/workshops.
You can also make an appointment
for a 1-2-1 training session tailored to
your particular needs at: www.sussex.
ac.uk/library/training. If you can’t get
to the Library, the Skills Hub provides
information on writing, referencing,
exams and assessment and can be
accessed at: www.sussex.ac.uk/
skillshub. Search #SussexFinalists on
Facebook and Twitter for further
updates and tips.
As we look towards the next academic
year, we are once again reviewing
our Library policies. This year, we are
particularly keen to review our Fines
Policy and are very interested in the
views of our user community. What is
your view on Library fines? Too high?
Too low? Should fines exist at all? If not,
how should we ensure that books are
returned when others need them?
If you would like to be part of this
consultation, please email
[email protected]
with your views.

Top floor refurbishment plans underway
Early designs to renovate the old archive area, left vacant following the move of
Special Collections to The Keep, promise upgraded and innovative new facilities.
Proposals include 10 new gender-neutral toilets and a relocation of the training
room from the Ground Floor to create additional study space. Working with the
Careers and Employability Centre, IT Services and the Media Technology Lab,
the refurbished space will also include two Recording Pods, providing users with
access to audio and visual recording equipment.
The designs will be finalised in the next few weeks and work is expected to take
place over the summer, meaning there will be some potential disruption during
this time. Follow us on Twitter: www.twitter.com/sussexlibrary and find us on
Facebook: www.facebook.com/sussexlibrary to keep up with news on the
refurbishment.

In response to
comments about the

we have been given a

Following a successful trial and positive feedback,
the Library has taken out a subscription to BrowZine,
which provides an easy way to read academic
journals on your tablet. Use it to create a ‘bookshelf’
of your favourite journals, create alerts and get
content sent directly to you as soon as it is available.
The BrowZine app is free to download from the Apple App Store, Google Play and
the Amazon App Store.

A Quiet Word
Many users feel that noise created
by phones, mobile devices, loud
talking and food consumption is
disruptive and makes it hard to
study in the Library. In the busy
assessment period, please show
consideration for others and

As shown, Special Collections has achieved a lot since moving to The Keep over
18 months ago. In addition to housing the Library’s Special Collections which
include the Mass Observation Archive, the archives of Rudyard Kipling and the
papers of Leonard and Virginia Woolf, The Keep is home to the East Sussex
