Preface
The Tenth Beam Instrumentation Workshop was held May 6-9, 2002 at
Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York. Dr. Derek Lowenstein,
Chairman of the Collider- Accelerator Department, delivered the Workshop opening
remarks. This marks a return to the beginning for this meeting, the first of these was
held at Brookhaven thirteen years ago in the fall of 1989.
The workshop was sponsored by the Collider- Accelerator Department and was
attended by 120 participants from 10 countries. There were four tutorial sessions, six
invited talks, 1 1 contributed talks and four discussion sessions. In addition, there was
a poster session with 42 poster presentations as well as a vendor display with 10
participating vendors. The week was marked by the award of the 2002 Faraday Cup
Award for innovative work in beam instrumentation to Andreas Jansson of CERN for
his work on Magnetic Quadruple Beam Pickups. This Award is given by the
Workshop Committee and is donated by Julien Bergoz of Bergoz, Ltd.
The workshop banquet was held at Danfords on the Sound, an inn with great
harbor views at Port Jefferson located on Long Island Sound. The food was excellent;
the company superb, and a fine time was had by all.
On the final afternoon, tours were available of the Relativistic Heavy Ion
Collider, the National Synchrotron Light Source and the Free Electron Laser Facilities.
Two tour busses carried over seventy people to each of these facilities where tour
guides waited to show them around. This was a lot to pack into one afternoon, and we
are indebted to Elaine Lowenstein and all the tour guide volunteers who made this
possible.
The success of a workshop of this kind is the result of the hard work of many
people. The organizing committee for this workshop worked hard in the shadow of
the events of September 11, to produce a viable and meaningful program as well as
choosing the Faraday Cup winner from so many fine submissions. It is remarkable
that the workshop came together on time. The members of the small local committee
labored to get all the details together, including the additional approval required for
the first time from DOE. Special thanks go to the conference secretary, Anna Petway
for her work in keeping things pulled together and on track. Thanks to Nick Franco
and Ila Campbell for handling the web site and the registration information. We are
grateful to Marty Kesselman for his handling of the vendor exhibits. We thank Roger
of graphic arts for photos of the banquet, Melanie Covitz and the staff of the
conference group for their help and advice, and Patricia Yalden of graphic arts for help
with the poster.
Of course the ultimate success of the workshop rests with the participants
themselves. In the talks, posters, and discussions sessions, truly rests the heart of the
work that is done. So as a community of instrumentation specialists we owe our
thanks to all who labored to present and then to write for these proceedings their
contributions.
The Spallation Neutron Source will be the host of the next workshop in 2004.
We look forward to this and hope to see many of you again.
