Today’s Matchup
“4 Downs” with the Dukes
1 - Saturday’s
game will mark Liberty’s first-ever FCS playoff contest. Meanwhile, JMU will be
making its 11th playoff appearance overall and
first since 2011. The Dukes captured the 2004
NCAA FCS national championship.
2 - Liberty has only faced two opponents (Charles-
ton Southern and Gardner-Webb) more often in
program history than James Madison. Saturday’s
game will mark the 18th meeting between the
Flames and Dukes. JMU is 12-5 versus Liberty
and has won six consecutive contests against the
Flames. (See page 20 for the full series history.)
3 - Liberty has faced three teams which qualified
for the 2014 FCS playoffs (Indiana State, Richmond and Coastal Carolina), going 1-2. James
Madison went 1-1 versus FCS playoff qualifiers,
defeating Richmond and losing to Villanova.
4 - Liberty will be seeking its fourth win all-time
at Bridgeforth Stadium, as the Flames are 3-6 at
JMU. Liberty’s most recent victory over the Dukes
came in Harrisonburg. Adrian Cherry capped off
a 120-yard day with a two-yard plunge with just
56 seconds left, giving the Flames a 34-31 victory
on Nov. 7, 1992. Liberty has won three straight
road games this season and is 4-2 on the road in
2014. That is the Flames’ most road wins since
2008, when Liberty went 4-1 away from Williams
Stadium.
Last Meeting with James Madison
Sept. 17, 2011
No. 13/14 JMU 27, No. 22/20 Liberty 24
Lynchburg, Va. (Williams Stadium)
•Cameron Starke’s 40-yard field goal split the uprights as time expired, giving No. 13/14 James
Madison a 27-24 victory over No. 22/20 Liberty
in a Top 25 battle at Williams Stadium.
•JMU took over possession on its own 25-yard line
with 2:11 to play on its game-winning drive.
•Dae’Quan Scott was the Dukes’ offensive standout, rushing for 126 yards and all three of JMU’s
touchdowns.
• Liberty quarterback Mike Brown threw for 298
yards and two touchdowns, while running for another score.
• B.J. Hayes paced the Flames’ receiving corps with
nine catches for 158 yards and a touchdown.
•Current Flame Nick Sigmon started and made
eight tackles as a freshman linebacker.
•James Madison went on to finish 8-5 and make
its most recent FCS playoff appearance, prior to
this season. The Flames finished 7-4.

Flames Versus Ranked Opponents
•Liberty is 15-49 all-time versus nationally ranked
FCS opponents.
•The Flames are 2-1 against nationally ranked FCS
foes in 2014 and have won three of their last four
games against Top 25 teams.
•The Flames have never defeated three FCS Top
25 opponents in a single season.
•Liberty is 4-7 versus ranked opponents under
head coach Turner Gill.
Flames Versus the CAA
•Liberty is 2-19 all-time against CAA opponents,
with both victories coming at home. The Flames
posted a 27-13 win over Villanova on Nov. 20,
1993 and a 49-42 (OT) triumph over Hofstra on
Nov. 22, 2003.
•Since the Hofstra game, the Flames have lost 11
consecutive matchups with CAA foes.
•Liberty is 0-7 against nationally ranked CAA opponents, including its 46-39, double-overtime
loss to No. 20/21 Richmond on Oct. 4.
•If Liberty wins on Saturday, it would move on to
face a second consecutive CAA opponent (Villanova) on the road on Dec. 6. The Flames are 1-3
against the Wildcats but have not faced Villanova
since Sept. 9, 1994.

Offense

Special Teams
Chima Uzowihe, LU
Freshman
Stephon Masha, LU
1 - Jacob Hagen needs one interception to set the
Big South single-season record with nine picks.
That would be the most interceptions in a single
season by a Flame since 1979.
1 - Josh Woodrum needs one TD pass to become
the third QB in program history and the fifth in
Big South annals with 50 career TD passes.
8.5 -
Defensive linemen Chima Uzowihe (8.0
sacks) and Toby Onyechi (7.5 sacks) are both
bearing down on the Big South single-season
record of 8.5 sacks, set by Gardner-Webb’s
Shaquille Riddick in 2013.
6/175 -
Darrin Peterson needs six receptions
to break the Liberty single-season record of 81
catches, established by Pat Nelson in 1991. Peterson would need a huge day (175 yards) to
break the Big South single-season receiving record of 1,388 yards, set by Stony Brook’s Kevin
Norrell in 2012.
20/139 -
With 20 rushing yards, D.J. Abnar
would pass Marshall Clark (1982; 1,185 yards) for
fifth place on the Flames’ all-time single-season
list. A 139-yard day would allow Abnar to climb
all the way up to third place on the list.
A Liberty Win Would ...
•Mark the Flames’ first NCAA FCS playoff victory.
•Be the Flames’ third triumph over a nationally
ranked FCS opponent this season. Liberty has
never defeated three FCS Top 25 foes in the same
year.
•Mark the Flames’ fourth consecutive road victory
and give Liberty its most road wins in a season (5)
since the 1997 Flames went 6-0.
•Improve the Flames’ November record under
Turner Gill to 11-1.
•Give the Flames their fourth season with nine
or more wins all-time and first since the 2008
Flames went 10-2.
•Snap James Madison’s streak of six straight victories over the Flames and mark Liberty’s first win
over JMU since Nov. 7, 1992.
•Halt Liberty’s 11-game losing streak against CAA
foes and mark its first win over a conference
team since Nov. 22, 2003 against Hofstra.
•Be the Flames’ first-ever road victory versus a
CAA opponent.
• Stop James Madison’s current seven-game winning streak.
• Move the Flames on to face Villanova on Dec. 6.
Quick Hitters
•At 4-1, Liberty won its third straight Big South
Conference title and seventh conference championship overall.
•The Flames’ 15-14 victory at No. 2/1 Coastal Carolina on Nov. 22 marked Liberty’s first victory
over a No. 1 team at the Division I level in any
team sport.
•Liberty’s No. 20 national ranking (Sports Network) is the Flames’ highest ranking since they
were listed No. 16 in both polls on Nov. 14, 2011.
•Chima Uzowihe’s blocked field goal which preserved Liberty’s 15-14 win at Coastal Carolina
was the latest in a series of dramatic late-game
plays by the Flames in 2014.
•John Lunsford forced OT against Richmond on
Oct. 4 with a 60-yard field goal as time elapsed.
•Jacob Hagen sealed an OT win at Appalachian
State on Oct. 11 with an interception in the end
zone.
•The Appalachian State victory, Liberty’s third alltime win over an FBS foe, started the Flames’ 5-1
stretch to end the regular season.
•Nov. 22 has been a good day for the Flames, who
are now 4-0 all-time on the date after the 15-14
victory over No. 2/1 Coastal Carolina.
•Those Nov. 22 victories include three wins over
nationally ranked opponents (No. 15 Appalachian State, No. 14/12 Elon and No. 2/1 Coastal
Carolina) and the Flames’ most recent win over a
CAA opponent (Hofstra).

Liberty Athletics Hall of Famer Robby Justino has
held the program record for passing yards at 9,548
since wrapping up his career in 1992. Junior Josh
Woodrum could put that mark in jeopardy during
his final two seasons with the Flames, and this
chart will track his progress.
Entering the James Madison game, Woodrum has
thrown for 7,068 yards, putting him 59 yards behind Justino at the same stage of his career.
Justino only played 11 games as a junior in 1991,
finishing the season with 7,127 career yards.
