ASVAB Testing Information and Parental Permission Form
The ASVAB or Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery is given each year at Northwest High School as well as
other high schools throughout Montgomery County. What is the ASVAB? The ASVAB test measures strengths and
potential for future success. It is a multi-aptitude test battery that helps in identifying different skills and competencies. It
consists of eight short individual tests covering General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph
Comprehension, Mathematics Knowledge, Electronics Information, Auto and Shop information, and Mechanical
Comprehension. Not only do you receive scores on each of these individual tests, you also receive the results combined
to yield three career exploration scores: Verbal Skills, Math Skills, and Science and Technical Skills. The ASVAB test
results provide a snapshot of current knowledge and skills. These scores can be compared with the educational or job
requirements for occupations of interest to students.
In order for your student to take the ASVAB at Northwest or at any high school in Montgomery County, you must give
your permission. The ASVAB will be administered at Northwest High School on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at
7:45 am in the College Career Info. Ctr., Rm 126. The ASVAB is only administered to students in grades 10, 11 and 12.
Please sign and date the permission slip at the bottom of this letter. To test at Northwest, permission forms should be
returned to the Northwest College/Career Information Center by Thursday, January 26, 2017. If you are requesting to
take the ASVAB at another Montgomery County high school, you must make this request through the Northwest
College/Career Information Center and your permission form must accompany you on the day of the test.
If you have any questions regarding this test, please contact the College/Career Information Center by email to
[email protected] or by phone. Only those students who have returned the signed permission slips will be
admitted to take the ASVAB. The ASVAB is being administered under reporting option 8 - meaning that the test results
are released only to the student and not to the armed services. Should a student wish to use his/her ASVAB results as
part of an enlistment conversation with a military recruiter, he/she can provide his/her scores to the recruiter.
At Northwest, ASVAB scores will be returned to students and interpreted during a Career Exploration Session in
the College/Career Information Center on Thursday, March 2, 2017, 1:00 pm. Students unable to attend that
session can pick up their scores during lunch or after school by the end of March. Students who have tested off-site
should contact the test-site school for score information.
