Our Vision
The vision of the RHPE/Health Department is for students to apply the principles of a healthy lifestyle and
participate in life-long health enhancing physical activity.
Our Mission
Our mission is to teach strategies and concepts so students may be successful in a variety of activities including:
fitness, individual and team sports, and games, while reinforcing cooperation thru positive social interaction. As
part of our mission we encourage students to take positive risks, seek out challenges and learn from their
mistakes in a safe environment.
Our Goals
1. By the end of the school year, 80% of all students will be able to complete a mile in 10 minutes or less.
2. By the end of the school year, 20% of those students under 10 minutes will be able to complete the mile in 8
minutes or less.
3. By the end of the school year, all students will know and be able to perform a simple strength work out, using
only their body weight.
4. At least 98% of all students will be health literate.
As a dedicated Physical Education and Health Department we realize the need, and are doing our part, to
combat the national epidemic of childhood obesity. We know the importance of educating our youth about life
long fitness and living a healthy lifestyle and are committed to making Rocky Hill students the most fit in
Montgomery County.
1. Grading Policy
Physical Education is an integral part of the total education of every child in Kindergarten through Grade 12.
Quality Physical Education programs are needed to increase the physical competence, health-related fitness,
personal/social responsibilities, and enjoyment of physical activity for all students so they can be physically active
for a lifetime. Areas that our Physical Education Program address are: improved physical fitness; skill
development; regular, healthful physical activity; support of other subject areas; self-discipline; improved judgment;
stress reduction; strengthened peer relationships; goal setting; improved self-confidence and self-esteem.
PE Grades are recorded in one category –
-90% grades will be placed in the “All Tasks and Assignments”, and 10% in “Homework for Practice and Prep”.
Although there is rarely homework in PE, we will use this category for our classwork when we are practicing our
concepts and skills.
-Grades are earned according to posted rubrics correlating to a 5-10 point scale, with a 0 recorded for nonattempt.

2. Policies and Procedures
Physical education is an activity-oriented class designed to develop and maintain healthful habits that lead to
increasing or maintaining an optimal level of physical fitness. Research indicates that healthful eating habits and a
regular program of vigorous exercise are necessary to achieve these objectives. Through active engagement,
physical education also helps develop positive intellectual and social skills including positive sports manners,
teamwork and cooperation. Due to the nature of this subject, the following requirements apply to all physical
education students.
 Students are expected to be in proper PE attire and ready to participate every day. Students not
prepared for class may be offered a loaner uniform on Mondays only. For health and safety reasons,
students should change from their school clothing into PE clothing. Sweat clothes are recommended for
cold weather activities.
 Students will be issued a locker with a combination lock. All personal belongs are to be locked in THEIR
assigned locker during class time. For student security, the locker rooms will be locked during the time
that students are in class. Please keep locker combinations secure. The Physical Education department is
not responsible for lost or stolen items. Students may ONLY bring their physical education clothing and
their binder. (Siblings may have to share lockers due to limited space.)
 Students that have notes from parents or doctors to restrict activity will be expected to be prepared for
class. Accommodations will be provided for these students in order for them to participate at a minimal
level and be responsible for class information.
 Wearing jewelry is a safety hazard and is frequently damaged, lost or may cause injury to a student.
Students are required to remove all jewelry (except for religious reasons with a note from parents), and
secure it in their lockers before participating in any class.
 Only water will be permitted in the physical education area. Students are encouraged to bring or buy a
water bottle for class.
3. Physical Education Attire
Students may purchase Rocky Hill physical education attire or bring clothes from home which meets the following
requirements: Gray or white short-sleeved tee shirt (must be full torso and sleeved), navy blue or black athletic

may cause injury). RHMS attire may be purchased anytime during the school year from your Rocky Hill
