Mission Statement


The Wootton-Churchill Super Team aims to
increase student achievement in the articulation and
transition from 8th to 9th grade by:
Fostering positive relationships between high school and middle school students and staff, and
Promoting the continuous development of academic and social skills to assure a successful transition.
Overview
All 8th grade students in the Wootton-Churchill Cluster (Cabin John, Frost and Hoover Middle Schools) are participating in the Super Team program this year. Super
Team is a program that promotes vertical articulation between middle school and
high school and is in its seventh year in the cluster. It is designed specifically to help
8th grade students make a smooth transition from middle school to high
school. Past research has shown that 9th grade students often struggle through an
adjustment period during the first year of high school. The time spent adjusting to
high school frequently has a negative impact on their grade point average (GPA)
and high school transcript as well as their academic and social experience. The Super Team program gradually teaches 8th grade students helpful information about
high school throughout the year. Students learn valuable skills such as goal setting,
organization, time management, and note-taking. Issues such as attendance and
how to calculate and monitor GPA are also addressed. During the 8th grade year,
the Wootton and Churchill counselors, teachers, and ambassador students visit the
middle schools to explain various aspects of academic and social life in high
school. Examples of topics include how to start the year off right, self advocacy,
where to find support, preparing for exams, selecting high school courses, and extracurricular involvement through clubs and sports. During these visits students
are encouraged to ask questions to gain a better understanding of what to expect
as they being high school. Parents can support the Super Team process by asking
their children about the middle school activities and attending the high school articulation events that will begin later this fall. Details of the parent meetings will be
advertised on middle school websites, ConnectEd messages, and by email.
