Physical Education and Health Team
Program Overview
Physical Education is an integral part of the total education of every student. Our program
strives to increase physical competence, skillfulness, health-related fitness, personal and
social responsibility and the enjoyment of physical activity for all of our students so that
they may be physically active for life.
As we move through the year, each unit of instruction will reflect the achievements of the
standards of the MCPS Physical Education Curriculum Framework.

Biomechanical Principles - Students will demonstrate an ability to use the principles of biomechanics to
generate and control force to improve their movement effectiveness and safety.
Exercise Physiology - Students will demonstrate the ability to use scientific principles to design and
participate in a regular, moderate to vigorous physical activity program that contributes to personal
health and enhances cognitive and physical performance in a variety of academic, recreational, and
life tasks.
Social Psychological Principles - Students will demonstrate the ability to use skills essential for
developing self-efficacy, fostering a sense of community, and working effectively with others in
physical activity settings.

social psychology, and biomechanics to design and adhere to a regular, personalized, purposeful
program of physical activity consistent with their health, performance, and fitness goals in order to

Motor Learning Principles – Students will demonstrate the ability to use motor skill principles to learn
and develop proficiency through frequent practice opportunities in which skills are repeatedly
performed correctly in a variety of situations.
2013—2014
Units of Instruction
A variety of invasion games (basketball, soccer, rugby, street hockey, etc.,
net/wall games (tennis, badminton, volleyball, etc., target games (archery,
golf, etc.) and striking / fielding games (softball, cricket, etc.) will be taught
throughout the year.
Fitness testing will be given three times. The assessment measures three
components of health-related physical fitness: aerobic capacity, body composition and muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility. To evaluate fitness
performance we will be using the presidential fitness standards. The Presidents Challenge, uses norm-referenced standards that will be used to determine the scoring for the Frost Iron Eagle Challenge that will is taking place
during the 2013/2014 school year.
Grading
Combining the MCPS Grading and Reporting policy with the MCPS Physical
Education standards , assessments will be given in the areas of movement
skill and concepts (MSC 40 %), health–related fitness components (HRF
30%), personal and social responsibility (PSR 20%).
Homework for Learning will be graded and account for 10% of the final
grade.
Uniforms
Robert Frost Middle School students are expected to change into a
uniform for class in order to be able to safely participate so that all of their
daily objectives may be completed. The uniform consists of navy blue athletic
shorts, a white shirt, athletic footwear and sweat clothes for colder weather.
These items can either be purchased from the PE team or brought from
home.
Short Term Medical Excuses
The PE team will modify class activities for a student who must be excused
from active participation due to illness or injury. Upon receipt of a parent
note, a student’s activities may be modified for up to five days. After this
time , a medical certificate must be obtained and MCPS Form 345-22 must be
completed by the physician and returned to the student’s teacher.
Health Education
Consistent with MCPS policy, all students will receive comprehensive health
education program for one marking quarter ( 9weeks). A variety of units including Mental Health; Tobacco; Alcohol and other Drugs,; Personal and Consumer Health; Safety and Injury Prevention; Family Life and Human Sexuality; Disease Prevention and Control; and Nutrition and Fitness. An informational meeting for parents will be held on September 16, 2013 from 6:30 pm
to 8:30 pm in the media center.

2.0 grade point average
Extracurricular Activity Fee must be paid if selected on team.
Practices and Games-Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays-2:25-4:15.
Games are either 3:00 or 3:15 p.m.
Students are expected to attend all tryouts, practices and games. Activity buses are available on
these days.
Basketball practice may include Mondays and Fridays. Activity buses are not available on these
days. Practice or games will only be three days a week.
Intramurals
Sports and recreational activities held after school among students in Frost.
Objective: Enjoyment of activity rather than pressure to win.
Activities: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 2:45-4:00 p.m.
Eligibility: Extracurricular activity fee paid ($30 a year)
2.0 grade point average
Activities vary from season to season. Students may attend all activities or choose specific
activities.
Activities are announced via morning announcements and electronic board and Frost website.
