General PTA Meeting Minutes
Tuesday, November 18, 2014
In attendance: All attendees signed in. Sign-in Sheet kept with minutes of record.
Minutes: Kavita made a motion to approve the minutes from October. Chris seconded. All in
favor.
Principal's Report: For the first quarter, 10.6% of the school earned a 2.0 or two or more
failures. 67% of the school earned a 3.0 or higher.
*Questions were addressed from parents in regards to the gun incident.
Treasurer's Report: Lori presented. No questions.
SGA: President Nathan presented. The Treats for Troops collected 950 pounds of Halloween
candy. The staff beat the students at the staff/student basketball game by one point. $210
has been collected for St. Jude's. No shave November is to recognize cancer. December 15th
will be Winter Spirit Week. New toys will be collected for the Rockville/Twinbrook area.
MCCPTA: Richie presented that MCCPTA approved the capital improvement priorities. Next, it
will go to County Council to determine how much money MCPS will receive.
Fleet Street: The Board presented a statement crafted by the Board. Minor changes were
made with membership suggestions. The new statement will read: The Richard Montgomery
High School PTSA opposes the Fleet Street Extension. The current plan does not go far enough
to address our concerns for student pedestrian safety and the traffic congestion in front of the
school. Although we appreciate the improvement in the reduction from four lanes of traffic to
two and there will be wide sidewalks, the design fails to specifically address any part of Fleet
Street north of Mt. Vernon Street, which directly impacts Richard Montgomery High School.
We would like to see commitment in the form of real data and traffic measures that put the
safety of Richard Montgomery students as a top priority. Our concerns are not hypothetical.
Last school year, two Richard Montgomery students, on their way to school, were injured by
cars--one on Richard Montgomery Drive and one crossing Wootton Parkway. {I couldn't keep
track of the motions/amendments}. Motion passed with one nay.
