General PTA Meeting, March 17th, 2015 8:07 pm: After Laura Goetz’s presentation. Mr. Monteleone: Commented on the PARCC and added that Common Core includes Inquiry and Application components in addition to Discourse. Spoke about the success of Career Day. There were 102 guest presenters and to solve the parking issues they sought help from the community. Mentioned that perhaps should try to align the teachers with speakers and find more ways to get parents involved in the event. Communicated information on how the budget cuts affect the school. RM lost 2.0 general education-staffing positions; this is equivalent to 10 classes. RM also lost 1.6 Special education positions. The consequences of these cuts might result in increased class sizes or cutting of elective classes. He mentioned that RM might get the staffing positions back. Treasurer’s Report: Reviewed the budget PTSA is in good standing as a non-profit SGA Report: February 1st Jam Fest sold 150 tickets February 23rd Blood Drive had good participation; blood goes to the local banks. March 6th $1100.00 was raised for Leukemia Lymphoma Society Upcoming: 4th periods will have a collection for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society and class that collects the most will win a pizza party. Thanks to Ms. Downing for organizing Career Day. The feedback from students was very positive. Ms. Downing: Rundown of Career Day: Students got to see 6 speakers in classrooms in addition to a fair on Main Street. Feedback: As a presenter of the Peace Corp, got students who didn’t speak English and weren’t eligible for the Peace Corp. For future events perhaps: o Give students a choice so they don’t have repeats – some students saw presentations of the same career several times. o Go into the community and try to select a mixture of careers – trade, blue collar, white collar etc. Teacher Appreciation Coffee and Sweets: should not be on the professional day because many teachers might telecommute. Perhaps do it on Thursday, March 26th. Maribeth will send out a sign up genius for donations. Set up a booth on Main Street for students to write thank you notes to their teachers. How can parents be involved as well? The booth will be set up in April. Nominating committee – meet and try to fill positions for next year. A couple of the people at the meeting volunteered for the committees. Meeting adjourned at 8:40pm
