4 STUDENT STAKEHOLDER FOCUS What do our students need? As a result of the root cause analysis process (RCA), it was determined that our students need to be engaged in: Rigorous Instruction All students need regular opportunities to listen to, speak, read, and write using academic language to demonstrate higher order thinking skills (i.e. analyze, critique, create, evaluate, make judgments, solve problems) A Community of Learners All students need to feel part of a community of learners where everyone is engaged in purposeful collaboration, treated with dignity, respect, and held to high expectations while engaged in lessons that related to students’ lives Teachers will need professional development on: Employing warm demander strategies that address cultural proficiency, build positive relationships with students, hold all individuals accountable for learning, & relate lessons to students’ lives Planning for rigor with disciplinary literacy skills, academic language, & critical thinking challenges Developing and implementing structured collaborative tasks where all individuals are held accountable Leaders will need professional development on: Effective facilitation/coaching of planning for student engagement in rigorous instruction and a community of learners Coaching to engage teachers in cultural proficiency setting measurable objectives, the use of multiple data sources, and reflective examination of student learning in order to adjust instructional practices 3 1 LEADERSHIP Mission The White Oak Middle School community collaborates to establish a caring and safe environment where each student feels supported and challenged to meet high standards. All students will be engaged in daily rigorous instruction where they will use critical thinking skills, relevant discourse, and creative approaches to problem solving.
