OUTCOMES
By the end of this brief video, we
will have shared some of the key
components of our method of
grading so that you have a better
understanding of how students’
grades are calculated.
GRADING METHOD
WHAT WE DO NOT USE:
Total Points Earned ÷ Total Points Possible × 100% = Grade
This grading method is called:
Summation Percentage
(We use something called Raw Score Conversion to Percent)
GRADING METHOD
WHAT WE DO USE:

Weighted Categories
 Formative
 Summative
 HW

for Prac/Prep
(Approximately 60 – 75 %)
(Approximately 20 – 30%)
(Maximum 10%)
Weighted Assignments
 Assignments
within a category can be adjusted to weigh more than
other assignments within that category

Raw Score Conversion to Percent:
 Every
assignment is converted to a percentage
 Percentages are averaged
 Each assignment is equal in value to other assignments within the
category unless designated differently by teacher
 Teachers designate a weight to every assignment
RAW SCORE CONVERSIONSCIENCE DEPT. EXAMPLE
Formative—65%
Category
Assignments
Formative 7/10 = 70%
(65%)
14/15* = 93.3%
15/20 = 75%
Summative—25%
HW—10%
Category Average
Weighting
70 + 93.3 + 93.3 + 75 = 82.9%
4
82.9 × 0.65 =
53.89
*Teacher assigns
weight of 2
Summative
(25%)
32/40 = 80%
80 = 80%
1
80.0 × 0.25 =
20.00
HW
(10%)
10/10 = 100%
4/5 = 80%
2/4 = 50%
100 + 80 + 50 = 76.7%
3
76.7 × 0.10 =
7.67
OVERALL GRADE 53.89 + 20.00 +
7.67 =
81.56% = B
BENEFITS
 Gives teachers the freedom to assign
points to an assignment to support
meaningful grading
 Allows for deliberate and consistent
weighting of assignments within a
category
 Supports consistency within a
department and throughout the school
