Principal’s Message - Week of April 25-29 Marc J. Cohen, Ed. D. Please note that it is not my intent to be all-inclusive in this message. There are far too many school events happening every day for me to mention them all. Please continue to read our Eagles Bulletin and Twitter feed for important announcements and visit our school homepage regularly for updates. Have a great week. Announcements • • • • • Primary Election Day – Tuesday, April 26th is Primary Election Day. All schools and offices are closed that day to facilitate voting. Prom – Friday, April 29th is the 2016 Prom. All juniors and seniors will participate in a Prom Promise assembly that morning, whether they are planning on attending prom or not. Students attending the prom are required to attend school on Friday. Any student requesting an early dismissal before the end of 4th period will not be allowed to attend the prom. All students attending the prom but leaving school early are required to sign out immediately following the Prom Promise assembly at tables that will be set up in the auditorium hallway. The Senior Panoramic picture will be re-taken on Friday, April 29, 2016. May 2-May 6 is Staff Appreciation Week. This is a great opportunity for you or your child to express their thanks to our hard-working, committed, tenacious, and caring staff. AP and IB testing starts next week. For a full schedule of exams, please visit http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/schools/senecavalleyhs/news/AP%20IB %20Testing%20Calendar%20MAY%202016%20rev.pdf Parents of seniors: This is a reminder that third marking period report cards were distributed to students last week. My staff is working hard to identify seniors for whom graduation is now at risk as a result of failing grades. While they will be sending home letters and making phone calls home in the coming days, it is a really good idea to review your child’s report card yourself as well and to contact his/her guidance counselor or administrator right away if you see something that concerns you. I am looking forward to handing your child a diploma on June 3rd and would hate to have anyone miss out when they are this close to graduating. Senior Exam Schedule: A copy of the senior exam schedule can be found at the bottom of this message. Lunch at SVHS in 2016-2017: • I want to thank our students, parents, and staff for your active engagement in the examination of Open Lunch at SVHS. Hundreds of you took the time to send emails, complete surveys, and/or participate in focus groups as we discussed issues related to school safety, class attendance, hallway traffic, pedestrian safety, and the logistics of lunch management should a change be made. Well over 90% of parents and staff who provided feedback supported closing lunch all together. While most student responses advocated for keeping lunch open, the majority of the comments from student surveys supported closing lunch in grades nine and ten. Some students suggested opening lunch to juniors in the second semester of their 11th grade Updated 4/25/2016 • year. Nearly all supported keeping lunch open for seniors, primarily because so many of them already leave the building for internships or other college/career related activities at that time. Effective the first day of school in the 2016-2017 school year, lunch at SVHS will be closed for all students who are not designated as 12th graders. When a student reaches 12th grade status, they may request permission to participate in open lunch. This will require a parent permission slip. Students who are given permission will receive an alternate student ID card that must be shown when students leave and return from lunch. The logistics required for students to take advantage of what will now be a senior privilege will be explained to students in my summer welcome back letter and at our opening class meeting.
