** Parent Info Packets are alphabetized on tables. As parents walk in, they are to
pick up their child’s highlighted packet. Left over packets will be sent home with
students on Friday.
*T-shirts & Water bottles are on sale. This is a fundraiser for the OE program
and the 6th grade team.
Welcome
Thank you for coming out tonight
My 30th year of doing OE. OE has been a part of my life for 38 yrs – I went
when I was in 6th grade for 5 days and 4 nights!!

What is Outdoor Education?
-
3 day/ 2 night environmental program
-
Incorporates classroom learning into real life situations/experiences
-
Develops interpersonal skills, teamwork, cooperation
-
MCPS Curriculum; meets the state graduation requirement for
environmental literacy
-
Expected that all students attend – it is school in a different location.
-
A fabulous experience! Definitely a top 5 memory of students in MCPS.
Granted – not for everyone but we are defined by our experiences. We
need to try new and different things – helps to develop us as individuals.
Everyone finds at least one thing they enjoyed about the trip.

RH has one of the best if not the best attendance rates and program of
any school in the county!
Basic Information
-
Summit Lake – near Thurmont MD & Camp David
-
$76 – includes transportation, meals, lodging, materials, insurance - $14
additional fee covers misc expenses such as smores’ , pictures, lifesavers,
glow in the dark necklaces, critter show etc.

3 Sessions –
-
Session 1 Wednesday – Friday April 13 – 15;

Session 2 Monday – Wednesday April 18 – 20,

Session 3 Wednesday – Friday April 20 – 22

Scholarships are available ..contact Mrs. Quinn or Dr. Eldridge

Lots of supervision – about 15- 20 staff members per session/15
counselors/10 Parents – that’s 1 Adult for every 5 kids!

Cabins – 8 bunk beds – 10-14 kids/cabin – 1 – 2 adults; 2 showers; 2 sinks
-
In case of emergency – call RHMS – they will call Summit Lake..cell
phones do NOT work!

o Perm. Slip/bus transportation form –last page of packet front and
back
o NEW THIS YEAR - Payment –

If you are paying by check – you MUST submit 2 separate
checks – one for $76 and one for $14 – both payable to RH

If you are paying by OSP (Online School Payment – can be
accessed through our RH website) – must click on both
payments of $76 and $14. This is the most efficient way to
pay. I get an email with your child’s name on it and the
payment info. We have a permanent and accurate record
this way.


Can’t bring on bus

Students need to be at school at 9:00 am on the day that
they are scheduled to leave. Please do not come earlier; we
don’t leave until 9:30 – 10am – Teachers are busy getting
ready

Pick up your child on the day they come home at 1:15
pm..students go straight home

Sleeping bag/bed roll/pillow
o Medication – one form/med. – Mrs. Kemp – our school nurse, will go
over the do and do not’s of medications and making sure the forms
are filled out correctly. There are directions/guidelines/sample
forms in the packet.
o Lunch the first day – bring


Parent Volunteers
o Go over parent volunteer page – parent volunteer form and session
#. NOW DUE FEB 25th
o We need parents!!!
o You are there to help the program and all of our RH students – not
just your child
o NEW this year – all parent volunteers must complete the Child
Abuse & Neglect Training. See schedule in parent packet (and RH
website) for exact training dates – various locations thoughout the
county. We will have a training here at RH on March 1st at 6:00 pm.
Coming soon (early Feb) will be an online training. Complete at
home and send in certificate.

All overnight chaperones must be finger printed (unless an
MCPS employee, active member of law enforcement, HS
student counselors)

Must be fingerprinted between 2/29 – 3/7
o Can go down to Board of Ed – Rockville – free
o AIS - $20 – voucher on line
Packing List -
not to bring!! Cell phones – don’t work – Camp David is a restricted area

Extra socks/shoes – don’t bring good clothes

Rain coat/poncho might be a good investment considering the time of
year we are going.

Watch the weather forecast for Frederick…come prepared! Students
will be outside just about 24/7

Need anything – sleeping bag, boots, gloves, coats, rain ponchos – let Mrs.
Quinn know.
Medication Form – Mrs Kemp – Due April 5th for all Sessions!!

Parent must bring in medication

Over the counter medication must be in a new & unopened package

Over the counter medication - parent is physician – fill out part 2 – see
sample!!

Prescription medication – must be filled out by doctor

If we already have the paperwork (inhalers/epi pens etc) no additional
work required

TURN IN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE – Don’t wait till the day we
leave..longest line and holds buses up!
Parent Permission and Bus Transportation form (last page of packet) – front and
back must be filled out!

discuss at alternative meal plan

Academics

Classes – 2 hrs
o Pond and Stream, Confidence Course, Predatory Prey, Orienteering

Describe each class
o Back at school students complete assignments based on their
learning in each of these classes for an assessment grade

Journals – written in many times throughout the day

Evening Acitivies
o Carnival/Night Hike/Campfire
o Cabin Idol, Night Vision, Firefly, Glow in the Dark Whiffle Ball, and
???? (TBD)

Recreation Time
o Arts and Crafts, board games, basketball, volleyball, soccer, flag
football, capture the flag

Camping with the Principal continues!!!
Unique experience – camping in tent on the 2nd night. Students must sign up
and get parent permission.
T-Shirts & Water Bottles – on sale tonight!!! Student may come to Ms. Milstein’s
(room 257) room to purchase either item any time during the school day
