Hello parent(s)/guardian(s) and future softball players;
I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself and to inform you on what are expected in try-outs and
if/when your daughter makes the Westland softball team. I’m Maigan Campbell, PE/Health teacher for 10 years
at B-CC High School. I’ve coached in many areas and at many age levels throughout the years. I was a college
softball player for 2 years and believe that being part of a team is a rewarding experience. With that being said,
this may be your daughter’s first experience with a team sport and/or trying out for one, so I’d like to put your
mind at ease and let you know what to be ready for as the season starts. Below you will find a detailed list and
examples of how try-outs will be conducted and how cuts, if necessary, will be made. If at any time you need or

Every girl will be “tested” on the following; all based on age/group level trying out.

Try-outs will only be the first 2 days – All players should be present for both of those days. Final cuts, if
needed, will be at the end of the second try-out day. Those accepted will show up the following practice.
Task done for assessment:
1. Fielding: grounders from short stop and second base position, throwing to home.
Pop flies from left field and right field, throwing to second base.
2. Batting: Soft toss, balls tossed by the coach (bucket full)
3. Warm-up: Partner throwing until warm, then partner grounders and pop flies

As a coach, I will make the best possible choice for the team.
Will keep roughly 14-15 players for the roster.
Every player will receive a letter after the final try-out practice, which will state whether or not they
have made the team. Accompanied with that letter will be their skills sheet and an article on how to
cope with being cut from a team.

Practices and games are only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until 4:20pm.
Activity bus is available for players to ride, which departs at 4:30pm.
A calendar will be given to every player after team has been selected.
We will need parent drivers for any away game during the season.
