M 408S (55845, 55850, and 55855) Spring, 2011 Instructor: Corinne Irwin Office Phone: 232-6194 (This is a non-private party line. Please use my email address below.) e-mail: [email protected] Text: CALCULUS by Stewart, sixth edition, 2008 Topics: Chapters 4.9 through 8.8, 15.3, 16.1-16.3, as well as Chapter 12 will be covered. Class Hours: MWF 11:00 -11:50 AM in BUR 208 Office Hours: MW 9:15 – 9:45 AM W 12-1 PM W 7:15 -7:45 AM in RLM 13.160 or by appointment Homework: Homework will generally be assigned every day in class. One week’s homework will be due the following Wednesday in class. The twelve highest homework grades count, dropping the two lowest grades. 1) Homework is to be submitted to Nick or me at the beginning/end of class or in office hours on or before the due date. Late submissions will not be accepted. At the end of lecture class on Wednesdays is the last moment that you can submit the weekly homework. 2) All graded homework can be picked up on the day that Nick brings the papers to class or to your discussion section. 3) If there is a homework grading error, see Nick during his office hours within ONE week from the date it was returned. 4) Your homework problems need to be written neatly, in order, and stapled together as one unit in the upper left corner. Then your homework assignment must be folded vertically with your name, your unique number, and the date on the outside. NOTE: 5 points will be deleted from your homework grade if your homework does not meet these guidelines. 5) “Art work” is good because you will receive 2 extra points if you put some form of distinguishable art work on the outside of your paper. 6) If you miss class, you can get the homework assignment from someone in the class. DO NOT e-mail Nick, Gonzalo, or me to get the problems assigned for homework. You will be expected to be in class 5 days per week, so you can get the homework from one of your classmates. Tests: There will be three tests and a comprehensive final. The tests will be given from 7 to 9 pm on the Monday nights of February 21, March 28, and May 2 in WEL. The examinations are not cumulative. No exams will be dropped. However, if you make a higher grade on the final exam than on one of the 3 regular tests, I will replace one low or missing test grade with your final exam grade. Only scientific calculators can be used on the exams so I would recommend that you use scientific calculators on your homework so that you will be used to them prior to exam times. Only questions about the test accuracy may be asked during the exams asked. Nick, Gonzalo, and I will simply be there to proctor the tests while you do your own work by yourself. Any typographical errors will have been corrected prior to the actual exams, so there will be no confusion on your part about the test questions during the examination period. During exams, Nick, Gonzalo, and I will not play the role of coaching you through a problem or answering your questions about if you are on the right track or not. The tests are used to find out what you know and what you can write correctly all by yourself. Teaching Assistant: Nick Zufelt is our teaching assistant. His office is in RLM 11.142. His email address is [email protected]. His office hours will be on Mondays 1:00 to 2:00 pm and Tuesdays from 9:30 to 10:30 am and 3:00 to 4:00 pm. Discussion Sections: TuTh 8:30-9:30 AM in RLM 7.120 (55845) TuTh 2:00-3:00 PM in RLM 5.114 (55850) TuTh 4:00-5:00 PM in RLM 7.120 (55855) Course Grade: Homework Average Test Average Participation (Attendance) Quizzes Final 10% 55% 10% 5% 20% A 90-100 B 80-89 C 70-79 D 60-69 F below 60 1) Answers without supporting work will not be accepted or graded on either the homework or on the test. You must define your variables and answer the word problems in complete sentences on both the homework and the tests. 2) No make-up exams will be given because you can replace a low or missing test grade with your final exam grade. 3) If there is a grading error, then you have ONE week from the date it was returned to dispute the grade; that is, a grade CANNOT BE CONTESTED after ONE week from the date it was returned. 4) Thursdays will be quiz days. If you have to miss a quiz for a legitimate reason, you have to ask Nick PRIOR to the date of the quiz for a make-up, detailing your reason for needed a make-up quiz, and you must make up the quiz during Nick’s office hours within a week of the date of the quiz. Attendance (Participation): This class is designed to be active and interactive. Much of what you learn will evolve from in-class experiences and discussions. Thus, attendance is essential. Attendance will be taken every day in the discussion sections and regularly at the lectures. I will assume that you will not miss ANY class unless you are ill or must attend to some personal emergency. (Covering someone's shift at work isn't a personal emergency.) I will not distinguish between excused and unexcused absences. Nick and I will average the two sets of attendance/participation grades for you at the end of the semester. I will assume that if you are not in class, you have a good reason. It is your responsibility to get class notes from another student for any class or discussion days you have missed. Participation involves paying attendance in class, asking appropriate questions in class and in the discussion sections, going to study groups, tutoring, and office hours when you need help, going to the board to work problems in discussion sections or study groups, etc. Talking to your classmates during the lectures is distracting to your other classmates. Sleeping in class, texting your friends, etc. are not acceptable, so such behavior will be considered as forms of non-participation and will be taken into account in your final course grade. Respect for Nick, Gonzalo, and me as well as all of your classmates will be required. We are going to be nice to you, so I expect you to be nice to us as well. Nick, Gonzalo, and I have photos for each person in the class, and the tutors will inform me after each session about who came and participated every week of the semester. Nick, Gonzalo, and I will know exactly who is doing what on a daily basis.
