Timberwolf News & Notes
John Poole Middle School
April 24, 2016
Principal’s Message
Good Evening Timberwolf Families!
This past Friday your child should have received their report cards for
the third marking period. Our students had a strong third marking period
with 76% of our students making the honor roll and 26% of our students
earning straight As. While we should certainly celebrate these
accomplishments, there are also some other amazing academic
accomplishments for the third marking period.
 Approximately 35% of our students showed academic growth from
the second to third marking period, including 21 students (about
6%) who increased their marking period average (on a 4 point
scale like a high school grade point average) by half 0.5, and we
had one student who increased their marking period average by a
full 1.0.
 We have also been able to maintain a 97% eligibility rate (students
receiving a 2.0 marking period average, with no more than 1 E),
exceeding the county average of 94%.
Congratulations to all of our students for the results they earned
through their hard work and dedication and with the support and help of
our staff and of course our parents. I encourage you to not only celebrate
your child’s accomplishments, but also work with them on how they can
continue to improve and strive for greater accomplishments.

School Year Extended by One Day
MCPS will extend the 2015–2016 school year by one day and end the year on Monday, June 20, 2016. The
MCPS request for a one-day waiver of the 180-day school year requirement was approved on April 18 by the
Maryland State Department of Education. The school year was previously scheduled to end Friday, June 17,
and now will end with an early release day on June 20. June 17 will be a full instructional day.
MCPS was closed for six days this winter due to inclement weather that left many roads and sidewalks in the
county impassable. MCPS already had four emergency weather days built into the school calendar. With the
state waiving one day from the requirement, MCPS has implemented its weather contingency calendar, which
adds one make-up day to the end of the school year.

8th Grade Dance Update
The deadline to purchase tickets to the 8th Grade Dance has been extended until Friday, April 29. If you haven't
already sent in your RSVP form, you still have time. This event is more of a big party than a formal dance, and
your child will not want to miss it! There will be great food, music, and lots of FUN!! Gift cards will be raffled
off throughout the evening. The event will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at the Poolesville Baptist Church
from 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. The theme will be “An Evening Under the Big Top.” Click here for the

Parents, your help is needed to make this event a success. You can help by volunteering at the dance or by
donating food and/or gift cards or by making a monetary contribution.
Volunteers: We need help setting up the room the evening before (Friday, 5/20) and the day of the dance. We
also need volunteers to collect tickets, chaperone and help (food, photo booth, etc.) during the event, and to
clean up afterwards. Please use the following link to sign up for one or more time
slots. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/805084fada72fa02-volunteers
Food: The menu will feature hot dogs, hamburgers, mac-and cheese, and chicken nuggets, along with various
snacks and beverages. The PTSA is asking parents to donate of some of the items. Please use the following link
to see what is needed and to sign up. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/805084fada72fa02-food
We are also asking for gift cards and monetary donations. Gift cards in increments of $10 (iTunes, Mooey's,
movies, McDonalds, etc.--anything 8th graders might like) will be raffled off during the dance. Donations can be
dropped off in the PTSA mailbox in the school office, or please contact Hisaho Blair at [email protected] to
coordinate delivery. Sign ups for these donations are included at the bottom of the food sign up.

Final Community Dialogue on Choice Study Scheduled for May 5
MCPS wants to hear from parents, staff, students, and community members as it develops a plan to address the
findings and recommendations in the recently released study of the district’s school choice and other special
academic programs. Join us at the final Community Dialogue to discuss the study’s recommendations and
the vision for the role of choice in MCPS. The event will be held on Thursday, May 5, at Walter Johnson High
School, 6400 Rock Spring Drive in Bethesda, from 7:00–8:30 p.m.
The study examines how well these programs advance our school system’s core values of excellence and equity
and whether the programs are meeting their intended goals.
Free child care (ages 4 and older) and interpretation services will be provided at the meeting. Participa nts also
will have the opportunity to talk in language-specific groups. To request a sign language interpreter, call 301517-5539 or visit educationalinterpreters.com/mcps.
For more information about the Study of Choice and Special Academic Programs, visit the Choice website at
www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/info/choice/. Comments on the report’s recommendations and general feedback
