Dear Parents and Students,
We are once again embarking on the adventure of summer reading! Reading is a life-long skill that a
person needs to succeed as a student and a worker and an essential skill for civic and personal activities.
Perhaps even more importantly, however, reading opens the world to a person through various forms of
literature. By reading, individuals have the opportunity to learn about people, times, regions, and ideas that
may enhance their knowledge and development. Reading can bring a lifetime of pleasure!
WHY SUMMER READING? Research strongly suggests that reading, like most skills, improves with
practice and decreases when we don’t engage in it for even a short time. Therefore, consistent with our
commitment to preparing all students for success during school and after graduation, we continue in MCPS
to expect all students to read during the summer.
ACCOUNTABILITY All Redland students will earn English or ESOL class credit for their participation
in the summer reading program. There will be a (graded) graphic organizer to fill out while reading, and
once students return to school, they will also get to discuss their learning with other students and Redland
staff members who all will have read different books this summer.
ACCEPTABLE BOOK CHOICES
Students may read fantasy books, historical fiction, science
fiction, coming-of-age novels, dramas, mystery, and realistic fiction--to name a few genres! Summer reading
books need to be a minimum of 100 pages in length, and they need to be at the student’s reading level or
higher. (Use www.lexile.com for book ideas if you received a Lexile score at the end of MAP-R.) We
encourage all students to challenge themselves with their reading selections. Be sure to check out the
Redland home page to see a list of recommended books! It is the student’s responsibility to acquire the
book on his or her own—from the public library, by buying it online (new or used), or by downloading it to
an electronic reading device or iBooks.
SUMMER READING DAY
On this day shortly after the start of the school year, each student will
bring the graphic organizer he filled out about his book and a paper copy of his book (if possible) to a group
discussion. School-wide, assigned groups will meet for an hour on a day with a special bell schedule, and
Redland staff members will lead discussions about summer reading books. There will be about fifteen
students in every group, and each will each have about five (or more) opportunities to share his thoughts
about what he learned from the book—both verbally and in writing. Students will be expected to evidence
understanding of their books during the small group discussions and will evaluate the process.
Simply put, students read a book, complete the graphic organizer, and participate in discussion groups.

Estimados padres y estudiantes,
¡Estamos una vez más embarcando en la aventura de lectura de verano! Leer es una destreza útil para toda la vida
que una persona necesita para tener éxito como estudiante y trabajador, y una de las capacidades esenciales de la
conciencia cívica y actividades personales. Y quizás lo más importante, sin embargo, la lectura abre el mundo a una
persona a través de diversas formas de la literatura. Con la lectura, las personas tienen la oportunidad de conocer
gente, épocas y regiones, y las ideas que pueden mejorar su conocimiento y desarrollo. ¡Leer puede traer una vida de
placer!
LECTURA DE VERANO ¿POR QUE? Las investigaciones sugieren claramente que la lectura, como la mayor parte
de los conocimientos técnicos, se mejorá con la práctica y disminuye cuando ya no participamos en ella incluso por
un corto tiempo. Por lo tanto, en conformidad con nuestro compromiso de preparar todos los estudiantes para el
éxito en la escuela y después de la graduación, seguimos en MCPS esperando que todos los estudiantes lean durante
el verano.
RESPONSABILIDAD Los estudiantes de Redland ganarán crédito en la cIase de inglés o clase de ESOL por su
participación en el programa de lectura de verano. Habrá un organizador gráfico (calificado) para llenar mientras leen,
y cuando vuelvan a la escuela, también tendrán la oportunidad de discutir su aprendizaje con otros estudiantes y un
miembro del personal de Redland, los cuales habrán leído diferentes libros este verano.
OPCIONES ACEPTABLES DE LIBROS Los estudiantes pueden leer libros de fantasía, ficción histórica, ciencia ficción,
novelas de adolescentes, dramas, misterio, y ficción realista, para nombrar algunos géneros. Los libros para Lectura
de Verano necesitan tener un mínimo de 100 páginas, y necesitan estar en el nivel o nivel superior del lector. (Utilice
la escala Lexile y las calificaciones del MAP-R distribuídos en la clase de inglés/ESOL.) Esperamos que todos los
estudiantes se desafíen con su lectura. ¡Asegúrense de fijarse en la página de Web de Redland para ver una lista de
libros recomendados! Es la responsabilidad del estudiante adquirir el libro por sí mismo, de la biblioteca pública, algún
libro que ya tenga, comprando en línea (nuevo o usado), o descargándolo en un dispositivo de lectura electrónica o
iBooks.
DIA DE LECTURA DE VERANO En este día poco después del inicio del año escolar, cada estudiante traerá su
organizador gráfico que ha llenado sobre su libro y una copia impresa de su libro (si es posible) para una discusión en
grupo. Grupos asignados a través de la escuela se reunirán durante una hora en un día con horario especial de
campana, y los miembro del personal de Redland dirigirán las discusiones sobre los libros de lectura de verano. Habrá
unos quince estudiantes en cada grupo y cada estudiante tendrá como cinco (o más) oportunidades para compartir
sus pensamientos acerca de lo que aprendió del libro, tanto verbalmente como por escrito. Se espera que los
estudiantes den evidencia de la comprensión de sus libros durante la discusión en grupos pequeños y evalúen el
proceso.
Simplemente puesto, los estudiantes leen un libro, completan el organizador gráfico, y participan en grupos de
