Anita M. Sands, PhD
Dr. Anita M. Sands is a global technology and business leader, public speaker, and advocate
for the advancement of women. She is currently a member of the Board of Directors of two public
companies – Symantec Corporation, the world’s leader in computer security, a Fortune 500 company;
and Service Now, the enterprise IT cloud company. Her career to date in Financial Services saw her
being appointed as the youngest ever Senior Vice President at the Royal Bank of Canada, where she
served as the Head of Innovation and Process Design. At Citigroup, as Managing Director and Head
of Transformational Management, she helped transform their $20B global operations and technology
organization. She joined UBS Wealth Management Americas at age 33, as the Chief Operating
Officer, where she was responsible for over three thousand technology, operations and corporate
services professionals. Then as Group Managing Director and Head of Change Leadership, she lead
the development and execution the organization’s transformational strategy, through the introduction
of innovative processes and industry leading technology platforms.
Anita holds a Ph.D. in Atomic and Molecular Physics and a First Class Honors degree in
Physics and Applied Mathematics from Queen's University Belfast. She was a Fulbright and O’Reilly
Foundation Scholar at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, where she graduated with highest
distinction with a Masters in Public Policy and Management. She was then awarded a research
fellowship from the Sloan Foundation and served as Executive Director of Carnegie Mellon’s
Software Industry Centre, and as a Visiting Research Fellow at the Munk Center for International
Studies at the University of Toronto.
Anita has been named one of the “Elite 8” by Bank Systems and Technology, an award
recognizing the eight most innovative executives in the North American financial services industry
and as one of "The TEN to Watch for 2012” by Registered Rep, a leading finance publication. In
2011, 2012, Anita was named to the Irish American “Top Forty Under Forty”, and “Woman of
Influence” lists and has been a three time honoree among the “Wall Street 50”, which recognizes the
best and brightest Irish and Irish-American leaders. Most recently, she was recognized as the
“Graduate of the Year” by her Alma Mater, Queens University Belfast.
On three occasions, Anita has been invited by the Irish Prime Minister to participate in the
Global Irish Economic forum, a gathering of the most influential members of the global Irish Diaspora
and the Irish Cabinet to formulate approaches to Ireland’s economic recovery. She is also a member
of Enterprise Ireland’s Financial Services Advisory Board, which aids Irish start-up companies
seeking to expand into international markets and of the Dean’s Advisory Council of Heinz College, at
Carnegie Mellon University. She is a former board member of the Ireland Fund of Canada, The
Ireland Canada Chamber of Commerce, and Ireland Park Foundation.
Her career has been further distinguished by a commitment to the advancement of women, a
topic she speaks on regularly. She is a member of the International Women's Forum, a mentor for
W.O.M.E.N. in America, a member of the advisory committee for the Women Inspiration & Enterprise
Network, and has been an attendee at the Fortune Most Powerful Women’s Summit. In 2012, the
international humanitarian organization, Concern Worldwide honored Anita with their Women of
Concern award, for her leadership, contribution to public service, and efforts to empower women
throughout the world.
Anita holds a diploma in piano from the London School of Music, has travelled to all seven
continents, most recently Antarctica, and is a former all-Ireland public speaking champion. She is a
frequent commentator on digital transformation and women’s leadership.

Member of Wealth Management Americas Executive Committee, reporting to CEO. UBS WMA provides advicebased solutions through financial advisors who deliver a fully integrated set of products and services specifically
designed to address the needs of ultra high net worth, high net worth and core affluent individuals and families.
Through WMA’s 7,000 Financial Advisors, 18,000 FTE, and with revenue in excess of $7B, we supported a
diverse range of business lines including Banking (credit cards, mortgages, securities based lending, deposits),
Trading (equities, fixed income, municipals), Wealth Management Advisory and Planning, Corporate Employee
Financial Services, along with field and client facing platforms, marketing functions, and support groups.
Developed and executed the end-to-end transformation of the business including a full scale architecture
redesign, process re-engineering, and application of innovative technology (including mobile, digital etc).
Developed a new operating model in line with UBS’ Global “Industrialization” Initiative, including the extensive
use of managed services, footprint redesign, enabling technologies, new services models etc. Objective was to
improve client experience, increase speed to market, lower headcount, variabilize cost base, and reduce run-rate
expenses with a view to contributing to WMA’s goal of $1B in net profit.
As COO, I was responsible for technology, operations, corporate real estate and administrative services, privacy,
business continuity management and program management office. The COO Group has responsibility for
approximately 3,000 FTE with a budget in excess of $800M. It also has a matrixed oversight of branch operations
and supervisory controls (approx 5,000 FTE). The WMA real estate portfolio exceeded $300M annually across
5.5M square feet and over 350 locations across the Americas. The technology function included over 1200
application developers (both on and offshore) and 400 infrastructure staff, with a budget of approx $560M.
As a transformation consultant, I directly supported the CEO and Executive Committee in assessing the
condition of the WMA business and formulated their turnaround strategy. The turnaround required the
articulation of a new business strategy, the redesign of the organizational structure, a significant cost-reduction
program, major personnel changes, introduction of a new operating model, creation of governance processes,
and an overarching communications strategy.

which oversaw an organization of 140,000 FTE and budget in excess of USD $20B.
Responsible for providing end-to-end oversight of Citigroup’s global operations and technology transformation,
including the creation of new Centers of Excellence for “change the bank” functions and Shared Services.
Oversaw several major transformational programs spanning each of Citi’s Products/Regions including a multiyear Cost Transformation Program, consisting of 50 cost-saving initiatives, estimated $4.4B savings.

Benchmarking, Program Management Office, M&A, Communications and Chief of Staff.
Responsible for Citi’s global RightPlacement Program, a $1B strategy, involving 20,000+ moves, site strategy,

Undertook a major improvement effort to upgrade O&T’s Project and Program Management capabilities (tools,
processes, methods) covering the entire program life-cycle from funding approval process, project management,
execution tracking and post implementation review.
Launched digital transformation projects including an enterprise wide Web 2.0 deployment, a full collaborative
