Choosing Your Unrestricted Modules Important Information for Level One Students This event is for you if: • you are an undergraduate student; • your programme allows for unrestricted module choice; • you have not yet selected and had approved a full 120 credits worth of modules. You will have attended an Introductory Academic Meeting (also sometimes referred to as Departmental Welcome Meeting) with the department or departments responsible for your programme of study. You are also likely to have been given some advice on, and may have been directed to, certain modules, or modules in certain subject-areas or departments, as providing a good choice of unrestricted study for your course. Before you can select your unrestricted modules, you need to: 1. understand the Regulations for your degree programme. You can check your Course Regulations at: www.sheffield.ac.uk/registration/newstudents/module/departments or with our Programme Regulations Finder available at: www.sheffield.ac.uk/programmeregulationsfinder/ 2. be clear as to how many credits you have yet to choose through unrestricted modules to make up to a full 120 credit load; 3. understand that, by the time you leave the Unrestricted Module Enrolment Event, and before you can proceed to register at the Goodwin Sports Centre, you need to have a full 120 credit load approved by the relevant departments; 4. note that the teaching timetable is subject to change and that late changes will be communicated online at: www-online.sheffield.ac.uk:3001/pls/live/web_tt.main 5. be aware that you will be able to amend your module selection through the Online Module Add/Drop process (excluding core modules). This is a three week period in which you can request that changes be made to your choice of modules and which ends on Friday 17 October 2014. Your department will be able to advise you further on changes to your initial module selection and will need to approve any new choice of module(s). Your Actions - You now need to: 1. Make a note of the module code (e.g. AAP112) for each of the core modules in your Course Regulations, noting the lecture teaching timetable for each as this will form your core personal timetable; 2. consult the modules available in the Guide to Unrestricted Module Choice at Level One which is available at the Unrestricted Module Enrolment Event. Please be aware that places on individual modules are limited, and that some modules are very popular with students. Staff advisors at the Module Enrolment Event will be able to advise of the availability of modules; 3. be aware that some modules require you to have studied a subject up to a certain level before coming to University; 4. aim to select modules which make up a full and balanced load of 60 credits per Semester; 5. be aware of the duration of the teaching for the unrestricted modules under consideration, noting where the teaching is for a full academic year, for one Semester only and if so, whether it is in the Autumn or Spring Semester, or less than a Semester (e.g. 6 weeks); 6. look out for modules which have co-requisites, and if you select any of those, make sure you also choose the co-requisite module in the same academic year. This information is available in the Guide to Unrestricted Module Choice at Level One; 7. once your unrestricted modules have been approved, make sure that you go to the Module Loading area before you leave the Octagon Centre; your new modules will be recorded on to your student record before you proceed to register at the Goodwin Sports Centre.
