bunny. For our March craft we decorated water bottles and plastic eggs to look like bunnies.
In April, club members had fun making a pop up chick
and beautiful flowers made out of crepe paper and chenille
stems. Next month will be our last meeting until fall and we’ll
celebrate with a pizza party and outdoor fun.

K9 K.O.A.R. What has K9 K.O.A.R. been
up to? Well, we have learned about dog anatomy, the beagle brigade, and all the things we
can teach our dogs with a hoop. We are also
planning some field trips to visit the Virginia
Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center,
learn more about barn hunt and herding, and
visit a barn hunt trial. K9 K.O.A.R. is currently preparing for Fun Day that will entail one
NADAC agility course, one AKC agility
course, and an AKC rally course. Visit our
website - www.k9koar4h.org and come join us
at our next meeting! Emily V., K9 K.O.A.R. President
Virginia Beach 4-H Wave Riders - The Virginia Beach Wave Riders have been very busy!
Our club went to Equismarts, a state-wide hippology contest, and we all did very well. The
junior and senior team placed. We also visited the area where Secretariat was born. We visited
his stall and we saw the worlds biggest horse shoe. We all had a great time and we did very
well. Our club also participated in horse judging which is new to all of us. We are hoping to
start a horse judging team, and continue our hippology club.
On Saturday April 15 our 4-H club and some of our
boarders joined us for a cookout and Easter games. We had an
egg and spoon race, bareback bunny, a tack up race, and a carrot race. We enjoyed having fun before our show season starts.
The 4-H Southeast District horse show will be held on April
29th and we all have been practicing very hard to prepare for
all of our different classes. Some of the classes are showmanship, hunter jumping, hunter on the flat, hunter equitation, and
many others for some of our other riders. We are all hoping to
do well at the District Horse show and qualify for the State
horse show.
Our club has also been holding drill team practice to prepare for the state horse show.
Our club also hopes to take our drill team to the State Fair. Steph D., Reporter
Livestock Club - Everyone has their 4-H project animals for our show in June. The 4-H
Livestock Club held the Annual Silent Auction on April 1 and it was a success. Thank you to

Chesapeake Livestock Club and Southern States. We will be having a Bake Sale Fundraiser at
Tractor Supply on May 13. Our Lamb Project Leaders will be having a Lamb Play Date on

JEB Little Creek Urban Knights and Underwater Cloverbuds - The JEB Little Creek
Urban Knights and Underwater Cloverbuds continue to be very busy. At the beginning of
March the Cloverbuds finished the 4-H First Aid curriculum and had a lot of fun making first
aid kits to take home. They started working from the Junior Master Gardener Literature in the
Garden curriculum. The Urban Knights really loved the projects from 4-H Cooking 201. "The
cream pies were yummy" according to Jayda R., our pledge leader. The Urban Knights are also working from a Junior Master Gardener curriculum. They have started with garden planning and focusing on vegetables. Both groups continue to work on the T-shirt rug for our center. We are looking forward to community service hours with the Virginia Beach SPCA coming up soon.

Foragers 4-H Beekeeping Club (Continued) - The District Contest, by: M. Mosher
On March 11, the Foragers’ had two members participate in the District Contest: Nina
E. and Mason M. They were awarded blue ribbons for all of the multiple categories that they
entered: Trash to Treasure, Photography, Presentations, and Works of Art to name a few. They
also won the coveted purple ribbon for a few categories. I think all 4-Her’s should participate,
because it is a good way to lift your spirits.
Skillathon, by: M. Mosher

individual Bee Bee at the February meeting. The top four

VIRGINIA JUNIOR MASTER NATURALISTS
By M. Moss
Birds and trees and marine mammals,
oh my! The Virginia Junior Master
Naturalists have started off the first
three months of 2017 with a bang!
From special visits from experts and
master naturalists to whale watching
and birding, we won’t stop learning
until we’ve explored everything our
area has to offer! Registration is now
open for the 2017-2018 year. Hurry to
register before this popular program
fills. We also have openings for 2 Teen
Leaders (40 hr. training course occurs
during the summer, beginning in June).
THE VIRGINIA JUNIOR MASTER NATURALISTS HAVE BEEN BUSY!
Birds
Trees
Marine Mammals
In our birds unit, the Virginia
Junior Master Naturalists really got
our fair share of incredible experiences! Along with a visit from
Sister the Great Horned Owl from
a local rehabilitation center, we
also hosted a crow as well as plenty
of experts and Virginia Master
Naturalists who took us on bird
walks, taught us about identifying
different species, and helped us
learn different bird calls. We even
dissected owl pellets! What a fun
unit!
After learning about local species,
different types of leaves, seeds, and
trees, we finally were able to head
out into the forest for some real
research! Two incredible Master
Naturalists helped us utilize the
knowledge we had gained on tree
rings, bark and acorns to identify so
many different things about trees:
how old a tree is, whether it’s
coniferous or deciduous, whether
the leaves are opposite or alternate
… incredible!
On a chilly day, Virginia Junior
Master Naturalists set sail on a
whale watching boat! On the boat,
we learned all about the different
marine mammals that can be found
in this area. Bundled up for the
whole four-hour meeting, we
looked for a marine mammal head,
fin or tail to pop up above the
surface. Finally, we saw a whole
group of playful harbor seals,
swimming by the rocks and bobbing up to say hello!
