WINTER WALK The Reception Classes had a super chilly time taking a Winter Walk around the school grounds this afternoon. We saw and identified many deciduous and evergreen trees. We also found frosted leaves, frozen berries, and ice covered puddles. The boys enjoyed looking at their shadows and crunching the frost covered grass beneath their boots. There was so much knowledge gained and vocabulary learnt from a simple walk outside. They then came back to the classroom to produce their own amazing images of Winter Trees. MT The talented Year 8 musician, Malek, pictured above, has passed his Grade 8 piano exam with Distinction. This is a remarkable achievement at such a young age. Congratulations Malek! EC With the New Beacon Centre nearly completed and Spring just around the corner the Eco-group and science department have been busy planning for the future. There is EcoDay to look forward to on Monday 20th March and of course our now well-established annual ‘Wildlife Photography Competition’. This year’s theme is Wild Sevenoaks. The important deadline dates are published in the school calendar, but I have had to revise these slightly to fit in with the hectic end of term schedule. These dates are now: Competition opens: Monday 20th February Deadline for entries: Monday 13th March Display and public voting: 14-17th March Winners announced: Final assembly Hard copy entries only please. Entries in an envelope to myself, either via front office/form teacher or direct to my form room (RM1). Please write name and form on the back of the photo or on the envelope. Activities for EcoDay will be published in future editions of NewsBeacon as soon as Marcus Brown and the Ecogroup have finalised details. Medium Term The school is looking to erect a greenhouse alongside the science block. It is intended that this, along with the adjacent garden plot will be developed and maintained by pupils and will grow plants for use within the science department and also as part of an extra-curricular activity. If anybody has a greenhouse in serviceable condition that they are able to donate to the school could they please email me. We have a maximum area of 5m by 3m. Long Term Many of you may not be aware, but we do have an area designated as an outdoor classroom. This is behind the swimming pool car park, which during the building work has become a little inaccessible. We are therefore investigating the possibility of developing an area adjacent to the Paddock Pitch as a new site for the outdoor classroom. Suggestions have included a covered decking area, a wildlife walkway (over amphibian pools) and wildlife area. We are currently consulting with Blue Forest, who are based in Eridge, but if anyone has any expertise in this area then please get involved. If the initiative does go ahead then it will be self-funding. Blue Forest worked with Benenden School on their brilliant Victoria Water Garden, which was funded by sponsored boards on the wildlife wooden walkway. Recycling We are still collecting textiles in the TRAID bin behind the swimming pool and have now applied for a collection box for used stamps. Money raised from this latter initiative will go to the RSPBs Save the Albatross Fund. A collection box will soon appear in the main school reception area. We continue to recycle old ink cartridges and mobile phones via the collection box in Pre-prep reception. Eco-schools Green Flag In March of this year we are due to reapply for our fourth Eco-schools Green Flag. This is a now a wholly pupil led initiative and the Eco Group has been active in introducing monitored litter picks and an annual travel census as well as increasing our biodiversity by developing the bird feeding areas and purchasing a hedgehog house. They are a constant source of ideas. However they do need a certain amount of adult guidance and to that end I propose holding an old style Eco-committee meeting once a term, the first of which will be on Monday 27th February at 4.30pm. If you would like input into the Eco group or have ideas for future initiatives and fundraising possibilities then please come along to this meeting, even if it is only for five minutes. The focus of the meeting will be ‘The way ahead..’ but we also need to look at the criteria set out to achieve our fourth Green Flag status. IP BOARDERS IN THE SNOW Christingle Last Thursday, as the boarders sat diligently doing their prep in the library, outside The New Beacon was being silently transformed into a winter wonderland! By supper time it was clear that it had settled very fast, and snowballs and tobogganing would be possible once work was completed. Everyone had a great time and the following morning, with the school shut, the boarders could get out into the snow again until their parents were able to battle through the wintry conditions to collect them. Now the question is – will there be more this winter?!!! AS On Friday 6th January, we wrapped up warmly to go to our Chapel to enjoy another service of Christingle. A boy from each class in years 1, 2, 3 and 4 made a Christingle using an orange, red ribbon, a candle and some sweets. These were lit and carefully taken to the alter. Mr Snowdon talked about the time of Epiphany and about the symbolism of the Christingles, cheekily trying some of the sweets to ensure that they did taste good! The boys sang beautifully and the Year 4 boys read prayers. EW The New Beacon invites you to attend the Music Scholarship Candidates’ Concert 2017 Thursday, 26 January 1.20pm in Music Room 1 th
