the Creston Valley Osprey Rowing Club are off to the Provincials in Victoria and later to the BC
Summer Games in Fort Langley.
the club has been in place in Creston for 5 years and now sit at 35 members and own 8 boats: 4
singles, 1 - 8 person boat, and 3 - 4 person boats. These boats are all used from clubs like Calgary
who have upgraded.
1 singles boat was stolen recently, but recovered at Duck Lake, however, 1 set of blades (valued @
$1000) is still missing.
the club has just purchased 4 new sets of blades (carbon/fibre) which are very light and easy to
handle.
they have also built a new dock at their site on the Kootenay River, which includes a stationary rowing
seat on the dock for practice.
other fund raising includes a power boat provided by the Credit Union which is used for safety pick-ups
from tips etc.
life jackets used are inflatable fanny packs which are light and out of the way when rowing.
still water would be preferred for practicing, however, the stretch of river used is very straight and
well protected from winds by the dyke system.
when participating in rowing meets in distant locations, boats are rented, so that transportation is not
a problem.
other clubs in the Kootenays include: Nelson, and Invermere. The Creston club has 15 members
under the age of 18, Invermere has 2 under 18.
casual rowing is done at about 20 strokes/minute - racing is done at 40 strokes/minute.
rowing scholarships are readily available in both Canada and the US.

Two old Jewish men, Mark and Ben, are sitting in a Mexican restaurant in Los
Angeles one day. Mark asks Ben, 'Do you know of any people of our faith born
and raised in Mexico ?'
Ben replies, 'I don't know, let's ask our waiter.'
When the waiter arrives, Ben asks, 'Are there any Mexican Jews?'
The waiter says, 'I don't know senor, I ask the cooks.' He returns from the
kitchen after a few minutes and says, 'No senor, the cook say no Mexican
Jews.'
Ben isn't satisfied and asks, 'Are you absolutely sure?'
The waiter, realizing he is dealing with 'Gringos' replies, 'I check once
again, senor,' and goes back into the kitchen.
While the waiter is away, Mark says, 'I find it hard to believe that there
are no Jews in Mexico . Our people are scattered everywhere.'
The waiter returns and says, 'Senor, the head cook Tom, he say there is no
Mexican Jews.'
'Are you certain?' Ben asks again. 'I just can't believe there are no
Mexican Jews!'
'Senor, I ask EVERYONE,' replies the exasperated waiter. 'All we have is
Orange Jews, Grape Jews, Prune Jews, and Tomato Jews.

A Newfie stuck his head into a barbershop and asked, 'How long before I can get
a haircut?'
The barber looked around the shop full of customers and said, 'About 2 hours.'
The Newfie left.
A few days later, the same Newfie stuck his head in the door and asked, 'How long before I can get a haircut?' The barber looked around at the shop and said, 'About 3 hours.' The Newfie left. A week later, the same Newfie stuck his head in
the shop and asked, 'How long before I can get a haircut?*
The barber looked around the shop and said,
'About an hour and a half .' The Newfie left.
The barber turned to his friend and said,
'Hey, Bob, do me a favour. Follow that Newfie and see where he goes.
He keeps asking how long he has to wait for a haircut,
but then he doesn't ever come back.'
A little while later, Bob returned to the shop, laughing hysterically.
The barber asked, 'So, where does that Darn newfie go
when he leaves?'
Bob looked up, wiped the tears from his eyes
and said,..........
'Your house!
