A WORD FROM THE HEAD
like to take this opportunity to wish you all
a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
At the end of this week Mrs Sandford will
be leaving us temporarily as she begins her
maternity leave. I would like to wish her
and her family all the very best for life
with their new addition. Mrs Ali-Gobern,
who has been working with us since
September will teach 4S until we break up
at Christmas.

Paget Post
December already, I can hardly believe we
are almost at the end of the first term of
this year. We are fast approaching one of
the busiest times of the year in the school
calendar with preparations for the
Christmas Fayre and productions well
under way. You should have received a
letter last week giving you all the details
you need to know about Christmas at Paget.
If your child managed to misplace theirs
between school and home spare copies are
available at the main office.

Teacher Day Notification
There will be a teacher training day on
Friday 13th January, school will be closed
to children on this day.
Reception Places September 2017
If your child is due to start Reception in
September 2017 you must apply for a
space in Reception by completing the online
application form on the website
www.birmingham.gov.uk
The final deadline for applications is 16th
January 2017. Even if your child attends
Paget Nursery you must complete an online
application form.
As the weather turns colder, I would like
to remind you of what happens in the
unlikely event that a school closure may be
deemed necessary. I will, of course, always
do my best to keep the school open, but I
feel it is worth reminding parents now of
how the message would be conveyed if a
decision to close the school was made. If
you are concerned that the school may be
closing due to poor weather conditions,
please tune into the local radio stations
BBC Radio WM, Free Radio or Heart FM or
visit the Birmingham website
www.birmingham.gov.uk. If the decision to
close is taken, a text message will also be
sent via the groupcall service, so please
ensure the office have your up to date
numbers.
I look forward to seeing you at the
Christmas Fayre and Productions but if I
do not get chance to speak to you I would

PEGI Ratings and our children
A recent survey completed by all KS2
children at Paget Primary revealed that
48% of Paget children checked the PEGI
ratings of computer games, which is great!
However 20% of Paget children play games
that are PEGI rated above their actual
age. This last statistic becomes more
worrying when, after discussions with some
children, it seems that these games consist
of ‘Call of Duty’ and ‘Grand Theft Auto’.
Whilst PEGI ratings are guidelines to help
parents come to a sensible decision about
which games they should let their children
play, these games are PEGI 18, meaning
they are most definitely inappropriate for
primary aged children.
Our job as parents is forever getting more
and more tricky thanks to the advances in
technology. Long gone are the games with
green graphics on a black back ground.
Graphics are now very realistic. It is
important that we as parents are
knowledgeable about the contents of the
games our children play. I hope the
following table is informative and explains
why such games are not appropriate for
our children.
A quick rule of thumb: If you are not happy
with your child seeing something in real
life, then they should not be seeing it in a
game. They can easily become desensitised
at this age as their experiences are still
shaping the person they will become. The
more violence or bad language they hear
and see, the less shocked they become and
the more normal the violence and bad
language seems. This then transfers into
real life and can result in children not
seeing violent situations as dangerous and
their ‘fight flight’ instincts not being
activated when needed, leaving them very
vulnerable.
If you need help or advice please don’t
hesitate to contact me.

Book Bags
Please make sure children are bringing
book bags to school every single day! We
encourage the children to use the value of
responsibility and it is an important life
skill to be organised for the day ahead.
Children will be unable to change books if
they do not bring them in and that is a
great shame. Please support the children
and the school by helping them to do this.
Thank you.
Children in Need
A huge thank you for contributing to the
Paget ‘Spotacular’ for Children in Need. I
am incredibly proud to share that we
raised a huge £552.24! Well done
everyone!

years or older with parents’ permission to
use it. However, we have been made aware
by the city’s safeguarding team that some
primary school children have been using
the app.
Within the Q & A section of the app there
is a question posed by someone asking
whether or not they should upgrade to
Dumbsmash 2. It says:
“Dumbsmash 2 has nothing to do with
Dumbsmash but it is a malware app that
hides itself on phones and the pushers
users to ‘adult only’ sites. As soon as it is
set up, the icon deletes itself and runs in
the background without the users
knowledge”.
This is something for parents to be aware
of when monitoring their children’s online
activity.
After School Clubs
There will be no after school clubs after
7th December. Clubs will re-start on
Monday 9th January. Please note this does
not affect Little Folks.

Dumbsmash2 – Advice
It appears there is a new app called
‘Dumbsmash’ which is a video messaging app
where people can upload themselves singing
over famous songs and then choose to
share via whatsapp, facebook, instagram or
text message. It is not intended for
children under 18 and you must be 18 or 13

Save the Children
We will be supporting the Save the
Children charity again this year by joining
in with a national campaign to raise money
for children who are less fortunate than
e
your Christmas jumper to work and school
day on Friday 16th December. We are
inviting the children to wear a Christmas
jumper or top to school or something green
or red and to bring a £1 donation. Staff
are joining in with this too and we hope to
raise some money to support this
worthwhile cause.
Thank you
Mrs Warner
Attendance
Currently attendance is 95.25% as a
school we are aiming for 96.2% so we still
have a long way to go! Please ensure when
your child is unable to attend school that
you ring and notify school before 9:15 on a
daily basis.
We are also actively encouraging everyone
to be in school ON TIME, if the bell has
gone and your child is not through the
entrance door, they are late.
It is in your child’s best interest for you to
get them here on time and give them the
right start to the day.
Better late than never but never late is
better.

Value of the month Thoughtfulness
So in
everything,
do unto
others what
you would have them do to you.” – Matthew
7:12
"No kind action ever stops with itself. One
kind action leads to another. Good example
is followed. A single act of kindness throws
out roots in all directions, and the roots
spring up and make new trees. The
greatest work that kindness does to
others is that it makes them kind
themselves."
This is the time of year when
thoughtfulness comes into its own with
Christmas, and all that brings, soon to be
upon us. However, being kind and
thoughtful means making ourselves aware
of the needs and feelings of others all
throughout the year and then taking action
to help them. It means taking the time to
stop thinking about ourselves, to put the
spotlight on somebody else's needs and to
think "What can I do to make that
person's life a little better or easier?"
Sometimes we can't do anything to solve
somebody's particular problem but just
the act of showing concern and compassion
can help to comfort them and make a
difference. For example, a friend might be
worried or sad about something that is
happening at home. Even though you cannot
solve that problem you can spend some
time listening to your friend's worries and
supporting them as much as possible
Caring and being thoughtful means letting
things matter to us; not just for people
that we know but also people that we have
never met before. It means that we also
value the needs and well-being of animals
and the environment.
Caring means that we have concern when
we see problems and unhappiness and
wanting to help; from very simple gestures
like buddying with a new pupil at school
right through to spending your free time
as a volunteer to help a good cause.
So why should we be kind and thoughtful to
others? One ENORMOUS benefit of doing
so is that it encourages other people to act
in the same way. We can't put it any
e
better than the famous American pilot
Amelia Earhart who once said:
"No kind action ever stops with itself. One
kind action leads to another. Good example
is followed. A single act of kindness throws
out roots in all directions, and the roots
spring up and make new trees. The
greatest work that kindness does to
others is that it makes them kind
themselves."
So - like a domino effect - we find that a
simple act of kindness creates another act
of kindness, which creates another and
another and another ... and before you
know it the world is a better place because
everybody is taking the time to care about
everybody else.
As the children start to look around and
deliberately look for chances to be kind,
thoughtful and helpful they will be amazed
at how many opportunities there really are.
They can start with the small things like
holding a door open for somebody, visiting
a lonely relative, offering to help with
somebody else's task or offering for
somebody to step in front of them in a
queue. When they do it with a smile they'll
be amazed at how easily they can make
other people smile whilst setting a good
example for others to follow.

As you know, part of Paget’s guaranteed
curriculum under the strand of ‘Looking
Outwards (giving back)’ is thinking about
other people less fortunate than ourselves
and supporting charities so that we can
play a small part in helping others to have a
happier life. Nursery has already sent off
over 40 shoeboxes to Operation Christmas
Child and Reception has helped raise over
£552 for Children in Need. We have
always found Paget Parents to be very
thoughtful and generous when we support
our charities throughout the year. This is a
wonderful lesson for children in which we
can all help to make a difference in the
world.
A Thoughtful after Christmas activity
for the children.
Letters and cards is one way we teach
children to be thoughtful to others.
Teaching children to write thank you
letters is an important skill, but it also
helps build into the character development
of our children. This important action can
be taught at a young age, and it also shows
them another important value - how to be
thankful. It is a simple activity, but
teaches a big lesson.
e
to teach them some important components
of a thank you letter.
•
Thank you for ….
•
I appreciate it because …
•
I will use it …
•
It made me feel …
It’s nice to end with a way you want to
connect in the future. For example, “I hope
I see you soon.”
I am sure the person who receives it will
treasure it as something made by the child.
And, on that note, from us all at Paget
we would like to say a big thank you for
your continued Thoughtfulness over the
last year and we wish you a very Merry
Christmas and Happy New Year.
With all the wonderful presents the
children will receive from Santa this is a
golden opportunity for some learning in
several different ways. It improves their
communication, language and writing skills.
If the children have received some
colouring pens and crayons they could make
a simple thank you card out of paper or
card. They could design it themselves and
draw on the card or cut out and stick some
pictures from magazines or Christmas
paper to decorate it, allowing their
creativity to shine through.
Important Components to Include in a
Thank you Card
The writing in the card only needs to be
simple if your child is very young. However,
as children get older and are able to write
more, it would be a wonderful opportunity
