Three Things Our Church Needs to Thrive
Hallsville
United
Methodist
Church
A thriving church is one that is living into the potential that Christ
desires for all churches. It’s members are diving deeper into
scripture, prayer and the loving care of the faith community.
A thriving church is benefiting the communities that it is a part
of. The church is shaping its communities through its presence in
the community; present in its schools, governance, neighborhoods,
sporting programs and organizations. Sunday morning worship is a
Spirit filled time of transformation, change, joy and
repentance. Lives are being changed as people encounter the
Risen Lord in passionate worship. Faith is taught as Christians
enter into Bible studies, small groups and classes. Churches thrive
when a majority of Christians in the church decide three things.
Decision #1- The Gospel of Jesus Christ contains power to live and
die by! You know Jesus’ story and it is deeply intertwined into your
own story. You know that Jesus’ life, death and resurrection provide
you with the power you need to move past a life of sin and death
and into a holy, grace-filled life. You believe that the Gospel is the
only thing that will turn our world from darkness and towards
goodness. Every decision made for the Gospel is an opportunity to
celebrate God’s kingdom coming on earth as it is in heaven.
Decision #2- You can make a difference! You aren’t the Messiah
but you know that God has gifted you and called you to good works
in the lives of other people. You believe that your life matters. Your
good words matter. Your participation in the life of your church and
your community matters. You know that God has made you both a
priest (1 Peter 2:9) and a representative (2 Cor. 5:20) of the Gospel
of Jesus Christ.

Decision #3- We can make a difference! You see the potential in
the giftedness and experiences within every one of your church
brothers and sisters. We are like minded in our desire to have a
thriving church that helps people experience more deeply the love of
Jesus Christ. Joel Osteen might offer a better sermon on Sunday
morning, but “church on the couch” doesn’t offer the immense love,
support and compassion that our church offers. You know and
believe that you are a part of a group of Christians that have the
potential to do a greater good together than you could have ever
done apart from one another.
All it takes is three things: believe in the Gospel, believe in yourself
and believe in us. See, becoming a thriving church is much easier
than you thought it was. Get to believing.

Sermons in July
Sundays In July
In July, our communion weekend will once again be the 2nd weekend
(10th) instead of the first weekend. We will have a guest speaker on the
3rd and Pastor Jim will teach a 4 week series on the book of Galatians the
last four weeks. Paul writes to the Christians in Galatia because they are
being deceived. Christian posers have moved into Galatia and are
teaching the young church that they have Christianity ½ right. So, these
posers are teaching the Church in Galatia the importance of being a Jew
first and then a Christian. Paul is not pleased to learn that the Galatians
have so quickly bought into this different gospel. In July we will talk about
Paul’s wise words to the Christian community in Galatia. You are
encouraged to read Galatians throughout the month in preparation for
each Sunday.

2016 Annual Conference Report to the Church
This year’s Annual Conference, held again, in Springfield, MO, has come and gone, and was considered very
successful.
On Opening Day, Bishop Schnase delivered his final Missouri Conference Episcopal Address. He reflected on
his 12 years in the Missouri Conference. He said that 800 churches were represented in the room, with over
600 active clergy, and more than 74,000 worship in our conference.
The Bishop suggested that the purpose of annual conference is leading congregations to lead people to actively follow Jesus Christ, and pointed out that churches do not exist to support the annual conference; but
rather, the annual conference exists to support the local church in ministry.
Bishop Schnase mentioned the recent General Conference, held in Portland, Oregon, and he felt that although all of our differences as a Church were not resolved, the global nature of the church was never more
evident, compared to recent years. The final message from General Conference was a formation of a commission, with an intent to deal head on with some of the most difficult issues of the day. Although Bishops
do not normally speak at General Conference, they did this year, and The Council of Bishops ended up creating a “Way Forward” commission that may call a 2018 special session of the General Conference, in order
to find a way for the church to move forward as a whole church.
This was a year of final service for both Bishop Schnase and our conference Lay Leader, Brian Hammons.
Brian shared the lay ministry team’s vision of creating spiritually engaged laity through the strategies of connecting & learning. Building on that vision, Mitch Ross, the chair of the Core Practices Team, offered to send
an advisor to local churches, free of charge to help develop a discipleship process tailored to fit the specific
congregation. The team hopes to reach some of the more than 70% of local churches in Missouri that do
not currently have processes for making disciples. Mitch said that number shows that “we’ve forgotten
what the main thing is.” Mitch even provided his personal phone number to anyone who was interested in
his plan!
Rev. Ron Watts is intent on creating the kind of church your children would want to invite their friends to
attend. In his own church, he began by recruiting and hiring young staff members, and they keep a close
eye on trends that younger people are focused on. He pointed out to us that contemporary music is only
temporary, and this year’s music may go by the wayside, and then here comes the music of the next year.
His church uses music currently playing on the radio, not what was played last year, because, remember,
contemporary is only temporary!
Both of the workshops I attended were concerning how we welcome those who enter our doors on Sunday
morning. First impressions are made within the first 90 seconds a guest arrives at your church, so those few
seconds are all we have to make a good, first impression, and we need to make the most of it. It is key to
have as many ushers as necessary, so that each new person can be shown where the sanctuary, class
rooms, bathrooms, etc. are located, so that they feel comfortable in our churches.
As a final note, I let Pastor Jim know that this will be my last trip to Annual Conference. I’ve been serving 810 years, and I feel it’s someone else’s turn. I am still willing to be a Lay Leader, if that works out numerically. Thank you for the support you’ve given me through these years, and I’ve loved serving.

Setting Up Automatic Payments for
Your Summer Offering
Summer months are often vacation months! Many
people and families make plans during the summer to take
trips and go see family or friends. This is a happy and
healthy practice within our American culture that leads to the
strengthening of family bonds and personal rest. Because
so many of us do catch up on this well needed time in the
summer many churches see a dip in worship attendance
and giving through the summer months. One way you can
help your church continue to go strong through the summer
is to set up your offering as an automatic debit from your
checking or savings account. This ensures that even while
you are away on well needed rest and family time that your
church is able to do all it needs to in order to sustain the
mission and ministry of the church. When you set up
automatic giving you are blessing your church by helping us
reduce the summer financial dip that normally occurs.
Along with this article in the newsletter is an “Authorization
Agreement For Automatic Withdrawal Of Funds” form. If
you already do a majority of your bills through automatic
withdrawal and can bless your church in this way then
please print out the attached form. Fill the form out with the
requested information, attach a voided check and return that
information to the church office. If you would like to mail it,
you can mail it to:
Hallsville UMC, 11700 N. Route B, Hallsville, MO
65255. Thank you for all of the ways you bless your church,
including your financial support! Enjoy your summer!
Help needed!
Hallsville Primary School collects new and gently used clothes for elementary children who
need them. They have asked for our help in sorting and organizing these clothes.
It will be a daytime project in the next week or two. If you can help with this project, call Connie Reedy at 881-1382 or email her at [email protected]. We will also need storage tubs if you
can donate those! Thank you for your help!
