A Year in Review . . .
Several orthopedic surgeons were added to our
medical staff: David Stapor, M.D., Ed Poon,
M.D., Mark Lesh, M.D. and Jeffrey Matheny,
M.D.
Mary Lamb, M.D. and Kristen Romesburg, D.O.,
Lakeside Primary Care
The Washington Hospital received the
American Heart Association/American Stroke
Association’s Get With the Guidelines® Stroke
Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The
award recognized the hospital’s commitment
and success in implementing excellent care for
stroke patients, according to evidence-based
guidelines.
To strengthen our presence in the McMurray
area, our Washington Physicians Group
opened a new primary care office in McMurray.
Named Lakeside Primary Care, the practice
features two board-certified family physicians;
Mary Lamb, M.D. and Kristen Scalise
Romesburg, D.O. The practice is located in
the former Prudential Realty building at the
corner of Waterdam Road and Route 19.
Cecil Family Medicine expanded its office on
Route 50 (Millers Run Road). This project
added nine exam rooms, as well as general
x-ray, lab draw, ultrasound and EKG. This
facility is open to all members of the public,
not just those patients of Cecil Family
Medicine.
Site work began at Meadows Landing on
Route 19 north of Washington (across from
the former Curinga’s Restaurant). The
Washington Hospital along with about 25
members of its Medical Staff will build and
own a 50,000 square foot medical office
building to be known as the Meadows Landing
Outpatient Center. This facility will host
Tri-State Surgery Center and our Women’s
Diagnostic Center, both of which will relocate
from their current locations at Neighbor
Health Center, along with several physician
offices.
In February 2012 the new Outpatient
Observation Unit (OOU) opened. The OOU
combines services formerly provided by the
Ambulatory Care Department on the sixth
floor and observation patients. Observation
patients traditionally had been cared for in the
inpatient units. The new OOU has 24 rooms,
22 of which are private.

The Washington Hospital received recognition
from Health Grades, a hospital rating company
that operates a public website which assigns
“star” ratings to hospitals, as one of the top 5%
of all hospitals in the country for patient safety.
Donnell House, Hospice Care of The
Washington Hospital’s inpatient hospice
facility, commemorated its 10th anniversary
in January 2012. Donnell House is an integral
part of our mission to provide great hospice
care, providing inpatient care and respite
care for caregivers in a comforting, home-like
setting. It’s the only stand-alone inpatient
hospice facility in Washington, Greene and
Fayette Counties.
The main lobby of the Hospital underwent
a facelift that included new flooring, new
furniture, and updated public restrooms. In
addition, the Auxiliary’s Gift Shop underwent
a facelift.
Our pharmacy and nursing units implemented
PYXIS, an automated medication management
process that supports our goal of safe, timely
care.

The Lemieux Foundation, in partnership with

in the Dr. E. Ronald Salvitti and Constance
Salvitti Center for Emergency Care. Austin’s

Why I Give
“They sent me a photo of the kids using the iPads in
their therapy. It was so nice to see the impact your
money really has.” - Genevieve Russell
Gen Russell’s belief in the hospital led her to establish a fund that will
support a variety of programs for years to come. Each year Mrs. Russell
chooses where to direct the interest generated from the fund. “The
Foundation staff contacts me, and we discuss where the money would
be the most beneficial.” This past year, she directed the money to the
Children’s Therapy Center to purchase iPads for the kids.
“Our hospital is top notch!” As a long supporter of The Washington
Hospital, and many other local charities, Mrs. Russell said she believes that
having a strong local hospital is important to a community.
“The Washington Hospital is one of my favorite charities. My husband
(Scotty Russell) was on the board and I really believe in it.”
After a few inpatient stays here over the years, Mrs. Russell says she’s
always received good care. “The nurses have always been so nice to me.
And when you’re sick, that means a lot.”
Gen also appreciates that she doesn’t have to drive far to receive care.
“We have so many good doctors and a good variety of services so you don’t
have to go into Pittsburgh when you have an emergency or if you need
surgery.”
Mrs. Russell is happy that her support will continue to help the hospital
enhance its programs and services and keep them close to home. “It’s
peace of mind knowing that the care is local – we have it all here.”

annual gifting to include the Washington Hospital Foundation’s

When I moved here from Chicago
in 2004, I heard many positive
aspects of the Washington Hospital’s
reputation for care in the community.
Unfortunately, I heard almost as many
opposing views. During the past eight
years while visiting hospitalized friends
and colleagues, I have observed, firsthand, a level of care and competency
that is impressive and nonpareil.
Compounding this focus on healing
those in need was a new awareness
of the Washington Hospital’s true reach
into the community. In 2006,
I became a member of The Wilfred
R. Cameron Wellness Center and was
amazed by the amount of downstream
and upstream health services (physical
and aquatics therapy, children’s special
needs aquatics therapy, nutrition and
wellness counseling) that are available
to members and the community.
I could see that many lives were touched
and changed by the considerate and
conscientious work of the associates of
this network of health services.
There are many levels of need that I see
in the community, but this initiative by
the Washington Hospital Foundation
is richly deserving of our support.
Today, I see the considerable role that
the Washington Hospital plays in the
healthcare needs of this community and
want them to be able to grow and invest
for the years ahead. My membership
in the 1897 Society helps make that
possible.
