Burning candle devastates
ROSE REES-OWEN
Ruth Cole wants to raise awareness about the dangers of leaving
candles burning unattended.
The upstairs section of her
Glen Eden property has been gutted by fire.
Her belongings have become
unrecognisable and among the
items lost was a 300-year-old chest
of draws.
Soot and ash cover everything
and leaves a grey sludge on the
once green carpet. The walls have
been burnt back exposing electrical cords and fluffy insulation
bats. Everything is black.
Yet in spite of the loss she feels
fortunate that herself, her daughter and her two miniature
schnauzer dogs all got out of the
house safely.
‘‘We are all alive – that’s the
main thing.’’
She is also grateful that the
outer walls of her property is
made of concrete resulting in
mainly internal damage.
Firefighters from four appliances battled the blaze at her Shetland St property on May 16 at
6.50pm.
About 20 minutes later the fire
was under control.
Three rooms were destroyed in
that short time – her bedroom, her
daughter’s bedroom and the study
as well as the hallway and
stairwell.
The artist assumes the fire
started because an aroma-therapy
candle was left burning in the
study while she and her daughter
were cooking downstairs.
When the smoke alarms
sounded they thought it was due
to the oven as the alarms often
sound when they are cooking.
It wasn’t until the pair smelt
smoke that they knew something
was seriously wrong.
They left the house immediately and called 111.

‘‘The firefighters did an
amazing job. In between battling
the fire they take the time to talk
to you and give you a bit of a
counselling session.’’
She says this is not the first
time she’s heard of a serious fire
starting because of candles.
In the 1980s one of her friend’s
sons had a party and he decorated the house with burning
candles.
A fire broke out which resulted
in a fatality.
‘‘I want to raise awareness
over the dangers of burning
candles and you should never
leave them unattended.’’

ext week is Attendance
Awareness Week at
Kelston Boys High School,
check out our pg 3 story.
I’m a big fan of this initiative –
I think it’s great that they are
promoting the message that it is
‘‘cool to be at school’’.
Forty-eight boys from Kelston
Boys have 100 per cent attendance
so far this year – that’s a fabulous
result for those kids.
I hope the efforts of student
engagement officer Janice Collins
resonates with the students, their
families and it filters through to
kids from other schools as well.
Regular attendance is vital to
learning as much as possible, not
being in catch-up mode and
making the most of education.
It also sets a child up for adult
responsibilities, such as turning
up to work every day and on time.
I believe parents need to instil
those attitudes in their children
from an early age and it starts
with turning up to school as is
required.
Well done Kelston Boys - lets
hope your positive influence rubs
off on others.

ROSE REES-OWEN
Attend today, achieve tomorrow
is the message at Kelston Boys
High School.
Posters and flyers with inspiring slogans fill the corridors of the
school gearing up for an Attendance Awareness Week starting on
May 23.
Student engagement officer
Janice Collins says, to her knowledge, it is the first in the country
and her long term goal is to replicate it in schools nationwide.
‘‘It’s about celebrating what’s
working well in our school
already,’’ Collins says.
The school has achieved a 94
per cent attendance rate so far
this year but she says there is
always room for improvement
and she wants to bring that figure
up to 100 per cent.
Forty-eight boys have 100 per
cent attendance so far this year.
‘‘There is a connection between attendance and achievement – if a student isn’t at school
then they are going to miss out
and catching up can be stressful.’’
She says vital things can be
missed if the child is absent even
if it’s just one day.
Collins says there is more than
one reason why a student is not
attending and it doesn’t just come
down to illness.
Time off school could be for a
variety of reasons including looking after a younger sibling while
Kelston Boys High School student engagement officer Janice Collins is introducing an Attendance Awareness Week. She
is pictured with Jacob Kim, 17, left, Ayush Kumar, 14, Shemaiah Mose, 14, Nathan Hastings, 13, and Kennedy Limpus, 14,

the parents work or the embarrassment of sending a child to
school without food.
Part of her job is home visits
where she tries to address some of
the underlying issues facing a
family.
She wants to raise awareness
about the importance of attendance, spreading the message not
only to the students but to parents
as well.
‘‘It’s about educating our
parents that it’s for their kid’s
future.
‘‘Enabling their child to stay
home is not going to help in the
long run.’’
Students who achieve 100 per
cent attendance during the week
will get a certificate of resilience
plus a prize. Spot prizes will be
handed out to the first boy to walk
into class as well as prizes for
punctuality.
A video produced by students
will show the impact of not
attending school and it will be put
on the website and Facebook page
and shown at assembly.
Milestone for motorway interchange
Two of the five Western Ring
Route projects are now complete.
The Lincoln Interchange and
Te Atatu Interchange projects
were opened by Transport
Minister Simon Bridges on May
13.
They are the first of several
improvement projects to be
opened this year as part of the
Government’s $2.4 billion Western Ring Route.
The $145 million upgrade of the
Lincoln Interchange has widened
and realigned the on-ramps and
motorway exits to improve safety
and traffic flow.
Purpose built bus lanes have
been added and the Northwestern
Cycleway has also been extended
and improved.
The $65 million Te Atatu Interchange project has added an
extra lane in each direction
between Te Atatu and Lincoln Rd,
there are new motorway on and
off-ramps and the Te Atatu
overbridge has been raised and
widened.
Other Western Ring Route
projects due to be complete this
year are the Causeway Upgrade
and the St Lukes Interchange.
The Waterview Connection is
due for completion in 2017.
Once completed the 48 kilometre route will create a
motorway connection between
Manukau and Albany along State
Highways 20, 16 and 18.
Transport Minister Simon Bridges, centre, is joined by students from Rutherford
Primary School at the opening of the Lincoln and Te Atatu Interchange.

Marching to stop child abuse
CATRIN OWEN
An Auckland mother is taking to
the streets to march for Moko on
May 22.
Karis Vesey has been following
the case of Moko Rangitoheriri
and decided enough was enough.
‘‘The nation needs to wake up
about it. New Zealand has the fifth
worst child abuse record in the
OECD and it’s not OK,’’ she says.
‘‘To march is not just about getting the Government, but people
to take responsibility for their
kids.’’
Vesey is a support worker at
Women’s Refuge and has
organised a march in Auckland
which has empowered mothers
around the country to organise
marches too.
Moko
Rangitoheriri
was
subjected to repeated child abuse
by his carers for two months prior
to his death.
He was hit, kicked, bitten,
thrown, dropped and stomped
which led to his death in Taupo
Hospital on August 10, 2015.
His carers David Hawera and
Tania Shailer pleaded guilty to
manslaughter on May 2 and will
be sentenced on June 27 at the
Rotorua High Court.
The Sensible Sentencing Trust
is aiming to ensure the death of
Moko is not in vain.
Trust founder Garth McVicar
says the trust would turn Moko’s
death into a catalyst for change.
Karis Vesey is marching for Moko on May 22.
‘‘The assaults were premeditated and prolonged fitting all the
criteria for murder.
‘‘The fact the Crown has
accepted a guilty plea of manslaughter smacks of collusion of
the highest degree and is symbolic of New Zealand’s horrific
level of child abuse,’’ McVicar
says.
Moko’s older sister Anna did
her best to protect him from the
abuse but she couldn’t save him.
Anna was only 7.
On the day Moko died, the
caregivers forced her to kick him
otherwise she too would be
beaten.
Vesey encourages people who
choose to march to wear blue not

just for Moko but to take a stand
against child abuse. The Auckland march will begin at Aotea
Square at 1pm on May 22 and
slowly make its way down Queen
St to Queen Elizabeth Square.

we

‘‘Family violence has to stop. End of
story. It’s well past time to do something
about it.’’
SPOTLIGHT ON FAMILY
VIOLENCE
As the statistics grow in West
Auckland for family violence it is
time to have a look at ‘why?’.
Yes, we have organisations
that collect the statistics and work
hard to support victims of
violence.
When we see an average of 600
family violence reports over three
months in Waitakere, one must
ask is this ‘‘an old bone we are
chewing on?’’.
I can recall witnessing
domestic violence in the 1960’s,
my brother in the 1950s.
We were not aware that it was
labelled as such. It was just the
way it was.
I am talking only of West
Auckland as this is the area that
the Women’s Centre Waitakere is
involved in.
When we talk to our clients it
appears that some form of family
violence is experienced, but
accepted.
So are we loving in the wrong
way? Are we lacking love and
appreciation?
Do we need to educate our
children from a very young age? Is
our interpretation of love
confused?
Are we teaching fear rather
than empowerment? Do we have
access to the correct resources?
Are we having positive
outcomes or are we dealing with
the negative by putting a plaster
on the wound?
As for the stats, Waitakere
police processed a shade under
6000 family violence reports in
2015 for the Waitakere area.
This year has begun with an
average of approximately 600
reports for the months of January,
February and March.
Who is controlling our
happiness? Or are we adopting
these ‘ideas’ from others?
It is important to reflect on the
ideas we are adopting and the
ideas we are handing over to our
children.
It takes a community to raise a
child. Are we?

CARE ON OPEN ROADS
There have been about 600 reports of
family violence in West Auckland
during January, February and March.
I am an old lady, 86, and was
anguished to discover that I
needed a pacemaker.
Once in Waitakere and North

doctors, nurses and staff were full
of warmth and kindness. I marvel
at their skill and dedication.

THANKS TO HOSPITALS
May I say a thank you following
my hospital visits.
Country roads are a challenge to
pedestrians or public transport
users due to drivers lack of
responsibility on open roads –
speed dominates.
I have family that live in a
remote area so bus travel is used
to get to school. It is a daily risk
when leaving home, sad to say.
We all complain about
regulations but never learn to
accept one has to live with order,
not chaos in communities.
Councils should display more
warnings of bus pick up and drop
off zones in less built up areas.

Down to earth
and out west
Diane Stevenson, 65, manager Redwood Park
Golf Club in Swanson
What do you like best about
West Auckland?
I like the people. There is a Westie person – they are funny and have
a quirky way of looking at the world
which I just love. Westies are people
with their feet on the ground, no
pretensions, this is what you get.
How long have you lived here
and where are you originally
from?
I moved from Ohura in the King
Country to Massey in 1990 and a
week later I started at Redwood
Park. I moved to Castor Bay three
months later and I have travelled to
work all of that time and the people
of this club have been the reason
why.
What do you like least and
how can we fix it?
The thing that has frightened me
most over the years has been the
violence. It’s pretty scary stuff, not
just in West Auckland but
everywhere. To fix it I think we have
to start with children at preschool
age, making sure they are safe and
understanding what is acceptable
and what is not. If children live with
violence they will be violent.
Where’s the best place to buy
dinner in the west?

And who does the best fish ‘n’

Redwood Park caterer Lawrence
does the best fish ‘n’ chips. They are
brilliant, lovely and crispy and
beautiful.
Who is the Kiwi you admire
most – and why?

Motorbike charity raising
money for disabled kids
SARAH ROBERTS
A group of motorcyclists are
putting on their helmets for a
good cause.
Around 60 Bro-Ccaab club
members gather regularly to
help raise money for children
with disabilities or in abusive
family situations.
Founder biker Julz Lee, who
lives in Titirangi, came up with
the idea about eight months ago.
Now the Facebook page for
Bike Riders Optimising Children’s Charities Abuse and
Bullying (Bro-Ccaab) has close
to 900 members.
It is the only registered
biker’s charity in the country.
‘‘I just thought to myself
there’s too many children slipping through the cracks who
need our help,’’ Lee says.
Lee won a Kiwi Local Hero
Award in 2015 for helping children and their families in West
Auckland.
She can relate to the
struggles they’ve had in life
because 17 years ago she
suffered a stroke.
‘‘It was just a couple of
months before my wedding day
and now I can’t even remember
getting married,’’ Lee says.
‘‘I was also paralysed in my
arm and my right leg and I had
to learn how to talk again with
six months of speech therapy.’’
The stroke was her inspiration to start a motorcycle

needy children. The club works
to ensure all children have the
chance to grow up with equal
opportunities in safe environments.
It hosts rides for its
members, runs volunteer raffles
and auctions to help raise funds
for three main charities –
Homes of Hope, Muscular Dystrophy Association of New Zealand and Kidney Kids NZ.
The latest ride was to help
raise funds for a boy called
Nikora, who suffers from brain
damage and spastic cerebral
palsy as a result of being shaken
when he was a baby.
Riders took to the roads,
from Papakura to Morrinsville,
in April and raised $2000 to put
towards Nikora’s medical costs.
Lee also helps organise the
Pink Ribbon motorcycle ride for
the New Zealand Breast Cancer
Foundation.
Over the past three years
she’s helped raise more than
$13,000 for the charity.
Go to bro-ccaab.com or email
Julz on director.broccaab@

support the charity or become a
member.
Better building consent process
Improving building consent
processes is the aim for Auckland Council amid an unprecedented building boom.
It aims to speed up approvals,
reduce costs and ensure consistency.
‘‘A near 12 per cent increase
in building consent applications
and over 130,000 building
inspections is the present
reality as we review the
demands on our regulatory
services,’’ regulatory director
Penny Pirrit says.
Already underway are plans
to tailor processes according to
the complexity of the consent
‘‘It’s not just about
speed and costs but
the quality of
service.’’
Penny Pirrit
with simple applications, such
as carports and garaging being
turned around in five days to a
set fee, subject to a quality application.
‘‘We’re looking at a service
from a perspective of a customer
experience. It’s not just about
speed and costs but the quality
of service and consistency of
decisions,’’ Pirrit says.
Online consent applications
are already being trialled with
some customers as the programme develops, speeding up
approvals and reducing costs for
both the customer and the council.
Additionally, the council is
training staff and professional
groups in better practices.
‘‘The quality of the application is a primary requirement
to achieving speed and reduced
costs,’’ Pirrit says. ‘‘One of the
big challenges we face is the
poor quality of some applications.’’

Fence put in after
bridge safety fears
TOM CARNEGIE AND ANNA LOREN
Parts of a much-loved bridge are to
be closed after standing for more
than a century.
The Old Mangere Bridge is
deteriorating and the NZ Transport
Agency is to install a fence to keep
the public from walking along its
sides.
‘‘This will allow a 5.8 metre wide
path through the full length of the
bridge to continue to provide walking and cycling access, while removing weight off the outer sections of
the bridge,’’ Auckland highways
manager Brett Gliddon says.
The fence will be in place by
June. It comes after structural
inspections showed ongoing deterioration in the bridge’s condition.
A large load on the edges of the
bridge could place it under enough
pressure to pose a risk to public
safety, Gliddon says.
Two wide bays in the stronger
sections of the bridge will remain
open for fishing.
The agency will monitor the
bridge’s condition to determine whether any further action is needed.
The Old Mangere Bridge was
built in 1914 and has been deteriorating for many years.
It was restricted to pedestrian
access in 1985 and underwent
strengthening works between 2005
and 2011.
Its replacement, a joint project
between the agency and Auckland
Council, is set to be constructed once
consents are confirmed.
It will be 250m long with a clearance of 4.8m at high tide.
Construction will take 24-27
months and is intended to tie in with
the East West Connections project.

Lady Barbara Harvey is joining the

hopes the rest of the nation will
stand behind her.
The wife of former Waitakere
City Council mayor Bob Harvey is
the new patron of Family Action,
based in Henderson.
The registered charity provides
counselling, for both adults and children, outreach services to those in
family violence situations and a refuge centre for women and children
needing to flee their home.
‘‘This is a nationwide
issue and something
needs to be done
about it.’’
Lady Barbara Harvey
‘‘Family violence is a stain on the
New Zealand psyche and it needs to
stop,’’ Harvey says.
‘‘I don’t think this is just a West
Auckland problem. This is a nationwide issue and something needs to
be done about it.’’
Young girls need to be
empowered from an early age to
understand that violence is not okay,
Harvey says.
The Glen Eden and Karekare resident practiced as a midwife in West
Auckland for 20 years and through
her occupation she came across
people from many different family
backgrounds.
Harvey, who is a mother of five, is
also a marriage celebrant.
Family Action chief executive
Michelle Clayton says the number
one cause of family violence is drugs
and alcohol, followed closely behind
overcrowding in houses, and poverty.
‘‘Children can be hiding in fear
when their father goes out to a bar
because when he comes back he will
give everyone the biff and that’s not
okay,’’ she says.
Family Action Henderson is the
busiest centre in the country helping
people with family violence, board
member Linda Cooper says.
‘‘People in West Auckland know
to come here to get help and that is
great, but it is also true to the saying
‘we’re better than this’,’’ she says.
Family Action has around 1500
clients from West Auckland.
The registered charity was

He wanted to challenge the smoke

WDHB defended its decision in

The appeal decision says that
allowing smoking on any hospital

the basic obligations of healthcare

not a breach of any rights or

WDHB chief executive Dr Dale

An appeal challenging the smoke
free policy of the Waitemata District
Health Board has been dismissed.
Two psychiatric patients and a
former nurse challenged the smoking ban by way of judicial review,
saying it was a breach of human
rights.
In a decision released on May 11,
the Court of Appeal upheld the ban,
which prohibits smoking inside and
on the grounds of all Waitemata District Health Board (WDHB) sites,
including its mental health units.
The Court of Appeal supported
the policy, saying it addresses the
need to reduce smoking and
exposure to second-hand smoke.
Barrister Richard Francois argued a smoking ban was inhumane
and contributed to patient suicides
by forcing them to withdraw from
nicotine when they were already
unwell.
‘‘They’re locked in a room and
told they can’t smoke cigarettes in a
time they’re under extreme stress,
have been hauled away from family,
friends and employment,’’ Francois
says.
The appellant who challenged the
ban, known as ‘‘Mr B’’, was a former
WDHB patient and involved with the
mental health unit for nine months.

Award-winning
childcare centre
raises benchmark
COLLEEN HAWKES
Forget any preconceived ideas
you may have about a modernday childcare centre.
Chrysalis Early Learning Centre in Avondale, designed by
Collingridge and Smith Architects and built by Keola, shows
just how much has changed.
The eco-friendly centre has
just won a gold award for Blockhouse Bay-based Keola at the New
Zealand Commercial Projects
Awards.
The head-turning, crescentshaped building wraps around
two protected trees – a 100 yearold English oak and a pohutukawa – to create a giant cocoon, or
chrysalis.
Owner Darius Singh says he
wanted ‘‘parents, families and
children to walk through every
corridor, walk around the playground and just say wow’’.
"We were between a bit of a
rock and a hard place, with heritage trees on one side and yet we
had to design a centre that could
fit in 150 children.’’
Architect Phil Smith says his
vision for the build was to take
this chrysalis idea and to inter-
‘‘We were between a
bit of a rock and a
hard place, with
heritage trees on
one side.’’
Darius Singh
pret that into a built form.
‘‘The shape was derived from
the trees, and we tried to respect
these and put in a protective barrier, which then became the playground. The building just naturally wrapped around the
playground. Everything was
about this layering process.’’
The building has 31 gridlines
radiating from the crescent shape,
with 100 ‘‘sails’’ on the exterior.
‘‘As you walk through the
building you will get a whole
series of transformations that will
lead you through from one side to
another,’’ the architect says.
‘‘That feeds through into the
idea that the kids transform as
they come through from the age of
one to five.’’
Classrooms are large and open,
with floor-to-ceiling structures
enhancing the cocoon analogy.
Chrysalis Early Learning Centre in Avondale, built by Keola, has won a gold award at the New Zealand Commercial
Projects Awards.
Indoor-outdoor flow is continuous, with adjustable glass doors
opening onto the play area.
This features an ever-changing
maze and a natural palette of
materials.
There is also extensive native
planting, an edible garden and
fruit orchard.
‘‘It’s not just about a showy
building, however,’’ Singh says.
‘‘The inventions flow right
through to the curriculum and the
actual learning that happens
here.’’
And then there are the trees,
which create the ultimate playground, with a fort-like structure
around their base.
The centre has eco-friendly features including solar power and a rainwater
recycling tank.

Going after the traffickers
ALASTAIR LYNN
Millions of women worldwide are
modern day slaves to sex trafficking.
But the fight against this
exploitation of poverty is not a
simple one.
If one woman can be saved, she
can easily be replaced by another.
Sheena Duffy had a first-hand
insight into the struggles undercover investigators face.
The Tearfund marketing and
fundraising director has just
returned from an eye-opening
visit to Bangkok’s infamous red
light districts.
‘‘It was extremely hard seeing
the women there,’’ she says.
‘‘I felt like crying and not just
for the trafficked women. The way
they were presented and what
they were wearing, it was just like
a shop.
‘‘Some were there by choice
but many definitely would have
been trafficked and had no
choice.’’
Tearfund funds and works
directly with the charitable trust
Nvader.
The non-government organisation has a strong presence
throughout Thailand combating
sex trafficking.
Duffy spent time visiting bars
that undercover investigators
operate within and took part in a
pseudo sting.
Understanding the parameters
Tearfund marketing and fundraising director Sheena Duffy got a first hand glimpse into the sex trafficking underworld.
their partners work in helps
determine how to best utilise
resources, Duffy says.
‘‘You don’t get to smell and see
and observe the community that
they’re operating in until you’re
there on the ground.
‘‘This is always a consequence
of poverty,’’ she says.
‘‘A lot of these women think
they’re going to get a job but as
soon as they arrive they now have
Glen Eden Fruit Shop
to pay this debt from their accommodation, food and travel.
‘‘The people who have brought
them know where these women
have come from; they know their
family, so there is no choice.’’
Of the 21 million people
trapped in slavery, sex exploitation makes up 22 per cent of all
trafficking.
Duffy says the challenge is not
just about rescuing women, but
hitting the issue at its core.
‘‘The brothel owners are the
ones we need to prosecute.
‘‘If one girl is rescued she can
be easily replaced.
‘‘But if we get the brothel
owner and they get convicted for,
say, 10 years then that’s hundreds
of women that could be saved.’’

Horror stories of building boom
In brief
FLU SHOTS
Pharmacies in West Auckland are

Life Pharmacy Henderson, in

MARIA SLADE
The steel framing of a two-storey
house bolted to nothing and a site
which failed 19 out of 27
inspections are the kinds of horror stories Auckland building
officials come across every day.
Auckland Council is failing
around 30 per cent of inspections
as the city experiences an
extended building boom.
The substandard work his
team comes across is ‘‘frustrating’’, manager building control
Ian McCormick says.
At one site the steel framing
holding up a house was wider
than the foundation it rested on
and therefore not bolted to anything.
At another the framing had
been levelled by packing untreated timber under it.
‘‘The person who did that was
an idiot,’’ McCormick said.
These sorts of errors should be
picked up by the Licensed Building Practitioner overseeing the
job, but many are working on
multiple sites at once, he says.
‘‘There’s people out there who
think we [the council] provide
quality control on the job… In
actual fact it’s the designer and
it’s the builder’s fault, it’s their
responsibility.’’
Council inspectors have the
ability to shut down a job and
make the developer do remedial
work.
Auckland Council is working with industry bodies to lift standards on building sites.
At one property where a temporary retaining wall had not
been built as required, the council
ordered that 48 truckloads of
material be brought in to make
sure the neighbouring house
didn’t collapse.
But once the remedial work
was done the builder could

NEW ALARMS
Smoke alarm upgrades will help
save people’s lives, but also the
planet too. Housing New Zealand
has put new smoke alarms in all
of its 64,000-plus properties. The
project has taken around a year
to complete, chief operating
officer Paul Commons says. It
saw around 275,000 existing
nine-volt alarms replaced with
new, longer-lasting units. The
new alarms have a 10-year longlife battery and needs less
maintenance. Commons says the
alarms will still be checked every
six months as standard and
tenants will also be able to test
the units themselves with a push
of the button. The old smoke
alarms will be heading overseas
to be recycled.

Debt consolidation has pros and cons
GOLDEN RULES
ROB STOCK
[email protected]
❚ Take on debts only to buy
necessary things
❚ Never enter debt without a plan to
clear it fast
❚ Aim to be a collector of interest, not
a payer of it.
Money talks
T
here’s an intensive debt
consolidation television
advertising campaign under
way.
It’s been sparked by the sale of
GE Money to an Australian
lender, resulting in a name
change for the New Zealand
business to Gem Finance.
Gem specialises in debt
consolidation loans, which are
loans taken out to repay a whole
bunch of loans the borrower
already has, rolling them into a
single loan that is easier to
manage.
Naturally, it wants to tell the
world about its product, and its
new name.
My belief is that all of us have
certain advertising hates. I
especially dislike the ‘‘My BP
story’’ kind of advert, you know
the kind that tell trite little stories
designed to warm the heart
towards the advertiser.
I don’t know about you, but my
‘‘story’’ with service stations is a
straightforward one of me trying
to give them as little of my money
as possible.
When my household went
down to one car two years ago, my
petrol station story became a
happier one from my perspective.
But even more than petrol
station story ads, I dislike TV loan
adverts.
The cherie bonhomie, lenderas-your-friend style of TV debt
advert masks the truth about
consumer debt: It impoverishes
borrowers to enrich lenders,
exposes borrowers to risk, and
inflates the cost of things.
If I could wish a debt
consolidation ‘‘story’’ on any
fellow human it would be this:
She/he never needed a debt
consolidation loan.
By definition, people who take
out debt consolidation loans have
problem levels of debt.
The dual aims of debt
consolidation should be to clear
the debt quickly, and to reduce
the fees and interest the borrower
pays to a minimum.
There are plenty of debt
consolidation loans available, and
plenty of lenders, including

the pros and cons of debt
consolidation loans.
It says people usually debt
consolidate at a lower interest
rate, but spread repayments over
a longer period of time so the
weekly or monthly payments are
smaller.
The negative of spreading
payments over a longer time is
that the borrower pays more
interest, and is at risk of
defaulting for longer.
Taking on a debt consolidation
loan also results in a new one-off
establishment fee. If that is added
TOP CASH PAID
to the loan, the interest bill rises
even more.
Lenders specialising in debt
consolidation loans often charge a
higher rate than the bank, and
borrowers should pay attention to
whether there are early
repayment charges.
These are the things you
should consider if you find
yourself with a debt consolidation
‘‘story’’ developing.
But make sure the story has no
sequel. It should end with the
words, ‘‘and she/he lived happily
debt-free ever after’’.

Urban migration book
wins non-fiction award
A Ranui author has taken out a coveted
national book award for her work on Maori
urban migration.
Melissa Matutina Williams won the E H
McCormick Award for General NonFiction, for her book Panguru and the City:
Kainga Tahi, Kainga Rua at the 2016
Ockham New Zealand Book Awards.
The awards were announced on May 10
at the Auckland Town Hall.
Her book focuses on dispelling myths
around urban Maori migration.
Williams spent more than a decade
researching the migration of Maori from
her ancestral home Panguru, Northland to
Auckland.
There was an idea that urban migration
led to the breakdown of Maori communities, Williams says.
‘‘I wanted to show that people didn’t just
move to the cities and fall apart,’’ she says.
The project began as a PHD thesis and
eventually turned into a 300-page exploration.
Recorded personal histories and photographs reveal the richness of experience
Maori had upon moving to urban areas.
Williams takes home $2500 as a prize.
The winner of the Acorn Foundation
Literary Award was Stephen Daisley for
his novel Coming Rain. It is the country’s
richest writing prize worth $50,000.
Author and historian Melissa Matutina Williams took more than 10 years to write her award-winning

Matthew logs into a world of opportunities
New Zealand College of Chinese Medicine
Secure your future in a rewarding
& respected profession
Matthew Siaopo has entered a world of exciting opportunities he
scarcely knew existed until this year.
The quiet 18 year old from Onehunga is the proud winner of a
two-year, $20,000 Vodafone Creative Technologies Scholarship,
which has allowed him to pursue a Level 6 Diploma in Information
Technology at the New Zealand School of Education (NZSE).
‘‘I finished high school last year but wasn’t too sure about the
tertiary options available or what was the right fit for me,’’
Matthew says. ‘‘I applied for the scholarship because technology
has always interested me and I wanted to study something I was
familiar with.’’
Unlike his experience at school, which he admits lacked focus,
Matthew enjoys coming to class at NZSE’s School of Creative
Technologies in Avondale.
The brand new purpose built campus provides a fresh impetus
to IT studies, with the use of technology to enable and support
high quality learning and teaching.
This ‘‘flipped classroom’’ environment provides a world of active
learning where student engagement and student-teacher
interaction increases, resulting in better graduate and career
outcomes.
Matthew represents the new face of Maori and Pacifica youth
who are taking to IT in a big way.
‘‘The scholarship programme opens up doors to young people
who would not typically pursue tertiary education or perhaps be
able to afford the fees,’’ he points out. ‘‘My success in IT has
inspired members of my whanau who now see new avenues for
study and employment for themselves.’’
Thanks to this scholarship, Matthew will have the opportunity to
experience first-hand the workplace models of the future, with
access to academic mentors, work experience placements and a

Improve your hearing now!
epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins
University in Baltimore says the
general perception is that hearing
loss is a relatively inconsequential
part of aging. But recent findings,
Lin adds, suggest that it may play
a much more important role in
brain health than we’ve previously
thought.
Fortunately, there’s a potential
upside. If this connection — shown
in several recent and wellregarded studies — holds up, it
raises the possibility that treating
hearing loss more aggressively
could help stave off cognitive
decline and dementia.
Applied Hearing has been
offering free initial hearing testing
to 50+ Kiwis for over 50 years as
a public health initiative. They
were the first private hearing aid
clinic in New Zealand.
Principal Alan Ferguson says,
‘‘We pride ourselves in getting
those with hearing aids to enjoy
them, and provide the services
required to maintain that benefit
throughout your life.’’
With clinics from Kaitaia to
Invercargill, most Kiwi’s can
access Applied’s first class
services and affordable prices.

Hearing loss is a troublesome fact
of life for more than 400,000

independent research, may
increase the risk of cognitive

By the time Kiwis reach their
70s, two-thirds have hearing loss
and yet only about 20 per cent
wear hearing aids.
‘‘The sooner you do something
about hearing loss the better and
wearing your hearing aids is
essential,’’ Applied Hearing’s

Shabby treatment
from Aussie netball
JOSEPH ROMANOS
Sports talk
L
eopards don’t change their spots –
Australian netball chiefs have been
typically ruthless in their dealings
with New Zealand over the future of
the trans-Tasman championship.
Australia have often lauded it over their
smaller cousins in sport.
Strange to think that in 1908 and 1912 a
combined Australasian team entered the
Olympic Games and, what’s more, in 1908,
New Zealand walker Henry Murray was the
team flag-bearer.
Such generosity from our neighbours
ceased long ago.
Australia finally fronted for a cricket test
against New Zealand in 1946. It was played
on an appalling pitch at the Basin Reserve,
and didn’t last two days. Not until 1973 did
Australia consent to play another test.
In the intervening years they kindly sent
B teams and let New Zealand teams play
their state sides.
Even now it’s difficult for our cricketers
to get a fair shake of the dice – when was
New Zealand last invited to play in the
prestigious Boxing Day test in Melbourne?
The ANZ netball championship has been
running since 2008.
Four Australian teams have won it and
only one New Zealand side, the Magic, in
2012. The Australians win more than twothirds of their matches against New Zealand
sides.
Now the Australians plan to drop New
Zealand and run a 17-week domestic
competition involving eight teams.
New Zealand had leverage previously,
because Sky Television was a major backer
of the event.
Now Fox Sports and the Ten Network are
on board, so it’s goodbye New Zealand.
The Australians seem happy to operate in
splendid isolation, just as they have in
Aussie Rules.
Perhaps they think their new netball
competition will be like cricket’s IPL, or the
English football premiership, with overseas
stars bolstering a domestic competition.
Whatever happens, it will suit Australia,
not New Zealand. It will cause international
netball to become absurdly lopsided, but the
Aussies don’t have the vision to be
concerned about that.
It’s interesting comparing netball’s
thinking with other sports.
In Super Rugby, New Zealand teams have
won 13 of the 20 competitions.
Only one New Zealand team, the
Hurricanes, have not won it.
By contrast Australian teams the Force
and the Rebels, South African teams the
Stormers, Kings, Sharks and Cheetahs,
Argentina’s Jaguares and, of course, the
new Sunwolves of Japan have not won it.
There have been no gripes from New
Zealand, which embraces the international
nature of the event.
New Zealand’s team in the National
Rugby League, the Warriors, have made two
finals, in 2002 and 2011, since their debut in
1995.
‘‘The Australians seem
happy to operate in
splendid isolation, just as
they have in Aussie Rules.
Perhaps they think their
new netball competition
will be like cricket’s IPL,
or the English football
premiership, with
overseas stars bolstering a
domestic competition.’’
Apart from those efforts, the Warriors
have been pretty undistinguished, but
league officials value their presence.
The Phoenix have not made a final since
their A-League football debut in 2007 and
there was serious talk recently of dispensing
with them, but they have hung on.
They enhance the A-League, even in their
bad years.
The Breakers had an inauspicious
beginning to their NBL basketball
experience, losing nine of 10 games at one
point in their debut season, 2003-04, and
finishing last the next season.
But the NBL persisted and the Breakers,
a crack side, have now won four titles.
They just needed time.
What a pity Australian netball wasn’t
patient enough to learn that lesson.

Dreams of Cup glory continue out west
SIMON SMITH
Most West Auckland football
clubs are still in the running to lift
the Chatham Cup in 2016.
The first round was played at
the weekend – with Ranui
Swanson, Oratia United, Waitakere City, Te Atatu and Waitemata all making it through.
Premier club Bay Olympic had
a bye and will also play in the next
round from June 4 to 6.
Not so lucky are Glen Eden
and Lynn-Avon who lost games
and are now out of the competition.
In the Women’s Knock Out
Cup, Lynn-Avon go through due
to a bye but Bay Olympic are out
after getting walloped 9-0 by Central.
Both the male and female competitions are styled on England’s
immensely-popular FA Cup.
Teams from across New Zealand fight it out in knock-out style
for four rounds, followed by quarter and semi finals and a grand
final on September 11.
The Chatham Cup has been
contested most years since 1923.
Waitakere City won it three
years in a row from 1994 to 1996
and has since made the final three
times, including in 2013.

In brief
WYNYARD RETURNS
Tai Wynyard is looking to once
more take out the under-18 FIBA
3x3 World Championships. The
18-year-old from Massey was in
the New Zealand team that
rocked the basketball world last
year when it won the
competition. Wynyard is the only
returning player from that team
to compete in Kazkhstan in June.
Coach Anthony Corban is also
returning. ‘‘Obviously having the
MVP of the tournament from
2015, Tai Wynyard, back in the
squad this year is a massive help
to what is otherwise an
inexperienced group,’’ he says. ‘‘In
2015 we arrived well off the radar
of pre-tournament predictions
and lifted our on-court
performance several notches for
knock out basketball, but we
won’t have that luxury this time.’’
Wynyard plays for Kentucky
University but is currently in the
country to attend a training camp
for the 3x3.
It will be Carl Pracey’s first time representing New Zealand when he mans the oars this August.
PHOTO: GETTY IMAGES
Pracey’s technique earns him the stroke seat
SIMON SMITH
Five years of early morning starts
and hard rowing is paying off for
Carl Pracey.
The Titirangi 18-year-old is in
the eight-man boat to compete at
the World Rowing Junior Championships in Rotterdam this
August.
It is the first time in eight
years that New Zealand has sent
an eight to the event, Pracey says.
Also in the squad is fellow
West End Rowing Club and Auckland Light Blues member
Jonathan Winter.
Before heading to the world
champs, the pair will attend a sixweek training camp at the Rowing
New Zealand High Performance
Centre at Lake Karapiro.
Pracey says when he first
started the sport at Mount Albert
Grammar School in 2011 he
wasn’t a great rower, but he had
good technique so was made
stroke seat at the stern of the boat.
It’s an important position as
the other rowers follow his
rhythm, pace and race plan.
The New Zealand team will not
be the strongest at the world
champs so will focus on rowing in
synergy, he says.
‘‘If someone is out a quarter of
a blade then the boat is heavier
than it should be.’’
Pracey has to pay the $10,500
cost of competing himself and
has set up a Givealittle page to
help.
West End Rowing Club in
Avondale has bred champions,
with 2012 Olympic gold medallist
Mahe Drysdale and this year’s
Olympian Stephen Jones hailing
from it.
AIA CHAMPIONSHIP WIN
A footballer from Te Atatu was in
the team that won the final of the
AIA Championship in Tottenham.
Ethan Galbraith is a member of
the New Zealand side of
Birkenhead United players who
defeated Indonesia 2-1 on May 8.
Indonesia took an early lead but
NZ equalised with a penalty kick
just before half-time. The game
was won in the penultimate
minute with an impressive run to
the goal. The competition is the
first of an annual football
tournament that is open to all of
insurance company AIA’s
markets.
