The Main Battles of The First World War Investigation: Explore the main battles of the First World War. Pupils will learn more about key battles, make notes and produce a whole class timeline. You could print the worksheet or the students can create a similar table in their books. The Lesson 1. Introduction Explain that there were a number of long, arduous battles during the First World War. Revise who was fighting against who using information from the Overview of the First World War pack on addysg.llgc.org.uk/ww1. 2. Explain that the fighting during the war was primarily on two fronts, the Western Front and the Eastern Front. Most Welshmen fought on the Western Front. 3. Explain the task. Investigative work; the pupils will collect information on 4 of the battles by filling in the worksheet below. 4. The pupils will attempt to gather as much information as they can in bullet point form about these First World War battles using The Main Battles of the First World War pack. 5. Distribute 4 battles for each group to investigate. Give each group enough time to read and note the information given in the packs on their worksheet. 6. Plenary - At the end of the lesson the whole class will come together to place these battles in order and form a timeline. The groups can then explain something about the battles they have been investigating. Organisation Print the PDF or distribute an iPad to groups/individuals and give them 4 battles to investigate. This task can be done either in groups or individually.
