VMI Opens 2009-10 Season Against Military Rivals Army
Keydets Start Year at Cameron Hall for First Time in Four Years
The 2009-10 Keydets return 10 lettermen from last season’s remarkable campaign that saw the team post the second-most wins in
school history (24), the most conference wins in school history (13) and reach the Big South Championship Final for the second time
in three years.
VMI returns starters Austin Kenon and Ron Burks, two of the team’s tri-captains. Kenon, a junior from Virginia Beach, led the Big
South with 3.72 three-pointers made per game, while his 16.3 points per outing ranked sixth in the league. One of the deadliest
perimeter shooters in the nation, Kenon will be counted on to pace the Keydet offense this season. Burks, a sophomore from
Mitchellville, Md., stepped in as a freshman and started all 32 games at the point. Burks led all returning Keydets in assists last season and may have been most valuable at the defensive end of the floor. He showed his defensive versatility in VMI’s back-to-back
postseason wins last March, limiting Big South All-Conference power forward Joseph Harris (Coastal Carolina) to just six points
before harassing Liberty shooting guard Seth Curry (Big South Freshman of the Year) to just 10 points two nights later.

Several key reserves from last year’s squad will be asked to take on larger roles in 2009-10. Sophomores Keith Gabriel and
Michael Sparks were the team’s fourth and sixth leading scorers last season, and will see an abundance of minutes this year. Gabriel
thrived as the team’s sixth-man last season, averaging 13.0 points and 2.8 3’s per game. Sparks displayed his shooting touch down
the stretch last season, 10.8 points per game in a nine-game stretch in February last season. Other key returnees include senior point
guard Adam Lonon, the third of VMI’s tri-captains, whose 75 career games and 58 career starts are tops on the team, and junior forward Hunter Houston, who missed the first half of his sophomore season before breaking out with 18 pts. against CSU in his season
debut, helping VMI to a three-point victory.

The Keydets have added three freshmen to the mix, and though the class may be short on numbers, it is long on talent. Forward
Stan Okoye, a Raleigh native, will look to continue the program’s string of impact players from central North Carolina. Okoye averaged 20 points and seven rebounds as a senior, helping lead Knightdale to three consecutive State Playoff appearances. Forward
Nick Gore is a local player from nearby Waynesboro, Va. whose shooting touch will be key to his playing time. Gore was named
First Team All Mid-Atlantic Prep last year, shooting 56% from the floor and 42% from beyond the arc. Guard Joe Carr hails from
Houston, Texas, where he led The Woodlands to a 27-2 mark his junior year.

Last Meeting with Army: Trailing by 14 points with less than 15 minutes remaining, VMI went on a 21-4 run that propelled the
Keydets to a 62-55 victory over Army at Christl Arena on Sunday, Dec. 21. The win gave VMI (9-2) its eighth win in their last nine
games, the program’s best such run since 1990.
Army (3-8) forced VMI into one of its worst halves of the season in the game’s opening stanza, with the Keydets shooting only
4-of-22 (18.2%) and committing 13 turnovers. Trailing by just three at the half, VMI endured a 16-5 Army run to start the period,
falling behind 39-25 with 14:15 remaining.
VMI answered with a 21-4 run thanks to seven three-pointers, taking a 46-43 lead when Keith Gabriel hit his third-straight
three-pointer with 7:30 remaining. That lead held up the rest of the way, though Army cut the lead to one down the stretch.
VMI shot 52% from the field and 53% from the three-point line in the decisive second half, pouring in 10-of-19 from beyond the
arc. The Keydets held a 38-34 advantage in rebounds overall, marking the first of three D-I opponents VMI out-rebounded last year.
The win marked the fewest points the Keydets scored in a victory under head coach Duggar Baucom.

Season Opener at Home a Rarity:
VMI kicks off its 2009-10 campaign at Cameron
Hall, a rarity for the program of late. The last time that
VMI opened a season at home came back on Nov. 21,
2005, when VMI lost a 53-49 contest to Army in the
team’s first game under head coach Duggar Baucom.
Overall, the Keydets have fared well in home openers, winning their first home game of the season nine of
the past 10 years, with only the 2005 setback against
Army breaking the string.
VMI Escapes Army With Low-Scoring Win:
How bizarre was VMI's 62-55 win at Army last
Dec. 21?
It was the fewest points that the Keydets had scored
and still won under head coach Duggar Baucom. The
previous low for a win under Baucom came, not surprisingly, at Army on Dec. 8, 2005 in a 72-63 victory. The
last time that VMI scored 62 points or less and still won
the game came on Feb. 21, 2004, when the Keydets
scored a 61-52 decision against Liberty.
Army forced VMI into one of its worst halves of the
season in the game's opening stanza, with the Keydets
shooting only 4-of-22 (18.2%) and committing 13
turnovers. It was the fewest field goals that VMI had
scored in a half in nearly five years, dating back to a 4932 loss to Coastal Carolina on Jan. 26, 2004 in the lowest-scoring game in Cameron Hall history.
Key Stats
After connecting on only 3-of-16 (18.8%) threepointers in the first half, VMI made 10-of-19 (52.6%)
from distance in the second half. VMI, meanwhile, made
only five two-point field goals and 13 three-pointers in
the contest. That is the largest difference between three's
made and two's made since losing to Cornell 99-94 on
Dec. 1, 2006, when the Keydets hit 19 three-point field
goals and nine two-pointers.
Williams & Holmes Selected in 2009 NBDL
Draft:
A pair of former Keydets were selected in the 2009
NBA Development League Draft, held on Thursday, Nov.
5. In the third round, Reggie Williams ’08 was selected
by the Sioux Falls (S.D.) Skyforce, while Travis Holmes
’09 was taken by the Utah Flash in the event’s sixth
round.
Williams (Prince George, Va.) spent last season with
JDA Dijon Bourgogne, averaging 12.7 points, 5.3
rebounds and 2.5 assists for the French club. The alltime leading scorer in VMI, Big South and Virginia
Division I history, Williams led the nation in scoring in
both his junior and senior seasons, while he also ranks
among the top six in VMI career rebounds, assists, steals
and three-pointers made.
Last season, Holmes (Charlotte, N.C.) became just
the ninth player in NCAA Division I history to amass
1,500 points, 500 rebounds, 300 assists and 300 steals
in his career. He helped lead the Keydets to a
historic season in 2008-09, beginning the year
with a stunning 111-103 win at Kentucky, when
he poured in a team-high 30 points. VMI went
on to a 24-8 mark and the program’s second
Big South Championship Final appearance in
three seasons, and Holmes was honored as an
All-Conference performer by the Big South.
Holmes’ twin brother, Chavis (Charlotte,
N.C.), meanwhile, is averaging 13.5 points and
1.8 steals while hitting all 20 of his free throws
for Caja Rioja in Spain, helping lead the club to
a 4-2 start. Holmes was selected to the First
Team in the Big South Conference and the
NABC District 3 last season, the same accomplishments Williams earned the year previous.
Chavis capped his career by becoming the first
player in Big South history to total 2,000 points,
300 rebounds, 300 3-pointers and 300 assists
in his four years in the league.
The selections of Williams and Holmes
mark the first time that players from VMI had
been selected in the NBDL Draft in the league’s
nine-year history.
High-Scoring Keydets Join Elite List:
VMI topped the nation in scoring for the
third consecutive year in 2008-09, averaging
93.8 points per game. With that effort, the
Keydets become just the third program to lead
the nation in that category three straight years,
and the first to do so since Loyola Marymount
from 1988-90. Furman also led the nation in
points per game for three consecutive seasons,
accomplishing the feat from 1953-55. No team
has ever led the nation in scoring for four
straight years.
In 2006-07, VMI shattered Troy's existing
mark (11.86) by hitting 13.39 three-pointers per
contest, one of five NCAA all-time marks set by
the Keydets that season. Last season, the Keydets
averaged a stunning 13.69 treys per game, setting the new mark.
VMI now owns five all-time single-season
NCAA Division I records, including those for
three-pointers made (442), three-pointers made
per game (13.69), three-point attempts (1,383),
three-point attempts per game (41.9) and steals
(490).
Road Warriors:
While VMI’s overall wins (24) and home
court wins (13) each counted as the secondhighest totals in school history last season, the
Keydets did set a new school record with 10
road wins in 2008-09.
That total was highlighted by non-conference wins at Kentucky, Army and Campbell,
while the team also went 7-2 away from
Cameron Hall in Big South play. VMI scored
historic wins at Liberty and Winthrop in league
play, while also knocking off the Flames in a
neutral site Big South Semifinal matchup at
Radford’s Dedmon Center.
Keydets Advance to Final for Second
Time in Three Seasons:
VMI put an impressive cap on its unforgettable season last March, advancing for the second time in three years to the Big South
Championship Final.
In the Championship, televised on ESPN2,
the Keydets jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the
first two minutes thanks to a combined 10 points
from Austin Kenon and Chavis Holmes. Radford

VMI earned the #2 seed in the 2008-09
Big South Championship, the best seed the
Keydets had earned since joining the Big South
Conference.
The team's #2 seed was also the best positioning that VMI had in a league-wide (nondivisional) tournament since the 1977-78 season. (VMI was the North division's #2 seed in
the Southern Conference Tournament in 199596).
Interestingly, that 1977-78 tournament
was also the last time that a postseason game
was played at VMI, when the Keydets defeated
seventh-seeded Davidson 95-80 at "The Pit."
Last season, the Keydets defeated Coastal
Carolina 96-76 at Cameron Hall in the
Quarterfinal round of the Big South
Championship.
Baucom Named NABC District 3
Coach of the Year:
VMI head coach Duggar Baucom earned
District 3 Coach of the Year honors from the
National Association of Basketball Coaches
(NABC) last March after leading the Keydets to
historic 24-8 season.
Baucom, who was also included as a
finalist for the last year's Hugh Durham Award,
given annually to the top mid-major coach in
the country, led the Keydets to their best season
in over 30 years in 2008-09. The team's 24
wins were the second-most in school history,
while Baucom took VMI to its second
Championship Final appearance in the past
three seasons.
Kenon Consistently On Target:
In only his second season on post, Austin
Kenon ranked among the national leaders in 3point shooting.
The sophomore finished last season
ranked sixth nationally in 3's made per game
with 3.7 per outing. Kenon has now played in
48 career games, and already has 176 career
three-balls (3.57 3pg), shooting 39.5% from
distance.
He currently ranks fifth in VMI history in
three-point percentage in his career. Kenon is
32 made 3's away from becoming eligible for
the Big South's and NCAA's career marks

regarding three-pointers. At his current numbers, Kenon would move into the top position in
3's made per game in the Big South while ranking 10th on the NCAA all-time list. With his
current percentage, he would also place seventh in career 3-point % in the Big South.
Turnovers Tell The Story:
A key to the Keydets' success last season
was the team's ability to win the turnover battle.
Not only did the Keydets lead the nation in
turnover margin (+9.5), but VMI did not lose
the turnover battle in a single game last year.
Additionally, the team's turnover margin
increased to +10.3 in Big South games.
The squad forced at least 15 opponent
miscues in each contest last season, and caused
10 more turnovers than they committed in 15
games, going 12-3 in those games.
In Big South play last season, the Keydets
averaged only 12.1 turnovers per game while
forcing 22.4 per outing. Overall, VMI was 234 when outscoring its opponent in points off
turnovers.
A December to Remember:
Entering the month of December, VMI was
off to a strong start at 4-2, including the
Keydets' stunning, season-opening win at
Kentucky.
But what VMI accomplished in December
was remarkable. The Keydets went 6-0 during
the month, running their overall record to 10-2.
Big South Standings
Included in the victories were Big South wins over
the reigning co-regular season champions,
Winthrop and UNC Asheville, as well as comeback wins at Army and at home against
Richmond.
The last time that VMI had an undefeated
month of at least four games came in 1976-77.
The Keydets not only went 6-0 in December of
that season, but followed that up by going 10-0
in January.

VMI Rings In New Year In Style:
Thanks to a late 15-5 run on New Year's
Eve, VMI knocked off Richmond 73-70 last season. The victory was the Keydets' second in three
seasons over the Spiders, and the team's first win
over UR in Lexington since Jan. 21, 1991. It
marked the first time VMI had ever posted 10
wins before the dawn of the new year.
