TEACHER PREPARATION:
○ Background information (Industrial Revolution, Romantic Era Music, learn to loom, and
simplify process for student use).
○ Challenges: Making the loom procedures student friendly, and time effective.
○ Solution: Use a smaller portion of the loom. Have student “cooperatives” (to model
companies).
● Important terminology for the Loom:
○ Warp: the strings wound tightly on the loom which will hold your work these run vertically
on the loom.
○ Weft: the strings woven horizontally on the loom which create the designs in the textile.
○ Shed: The opening created between the warp used to create the weft.
○ Stick Shuttle: the tool that holds the yarn or ribbon used to create the weft.

Instrument Construction:
Canvas, Coffee Cans, Rubber Bands, Markers
Loom Procedures & Tips:
Use a large gauge/weighted yarn for frame, and
do not use the entire width of the frame.
1) Keep the loom in front of you vertically. Make a
shed by inserting a shed stick across the warp
every other string. Call this Shed #1.
2) Insert the stick shuttle between the strings that
you created with Shed #1 by turning the shed
stick on its side.
3) Push Shed #1 to the top of the loom, and insert
Shed #2 by reversing the pattern. Insert the stick
shuttle between the strings to create the weft.
4) Remove Shed #2 and move Shed #1 back to
the middle of the warp.
5) Repeat steps 24 until your textile is a
satisfactory length. As you get closer to the other
side of the loom, it will be more difficult to lift the
shed stick. You may need to move your thread to
a yarn needle to move it through the warp.
6) When finished, lift the loops off the edges of the
loom. Use a crochet hook to braid the ends, or tie
a string around the loops and cut the edges to
create a fringe.
7) You may use your tapestry to create any kind
of craft here I used it to make a purse by folding
it in thirds, sewing the edges, crocheting a strap,
and sewing a closure on it.
