Track fencing speeds up
SPEEDWAY
THE contract to replace track
safety fencing at Arunga Park
Speedway has been awarded to
Alice Springs company MPH
Carpentry and Construction.
Work on the new fencing
will begin next week and
should be finished by the end
of July, allowing the popular
motorsport facility to reopen
to the public.
The NT Government committed $1.85 million to upgrade
the facility with a new track
safety fence and an upgraded
water reticulation system.
The speedway has been
Tennis
closed since late last year because of safety concerns associated with the damaged fence.
After more than 40 years
protecting competitors and
spectators, the concrete safety
barrier collapsed in several
sections following heavy rains
at the end of 2015.
A tender has now been advertised for Stage 2 of the upgrade at the complex, to
replace the water reticulation
system.
The existing water reticulation system has a number of
leaks because of its age, with
the tender due to close at the
end of this month.

ALTHOUGH most sporting clubs weren’t
happy with the town-wide cancellation of sports
last week, MPH Vikings coach Roy Graham
believes his side has benefited from the extra
week’s rest ahead of their match with Stormbirds tomorrow evening.
The club sits second on the Southern Zone
Premier League table after two rounds and Graham believes the extra week off has given his
young side the chance to regroup after defeat in
the FFA Cup last Wednesday, adding that the
club’s impressive start to the season can be attributed to his young players’ performance.
“ ... It gives us a bit of time to regroup after the
loss to Celtic; two weeks of training and correcting where we went wrong in the FFA Cup has
been good for us I think,” Graham said.
“I think it is mainly the young kids coming
through that are driving our team to be honest.
We’ve got four under 16s really out to prove
themselves and they’re playing really well and
snapping at the older A Graders’ heels, who are
starting to wake up to the challenge.
“The kids want to take their spot and everyone wants to retain their spot as well so it’s
working really well.”
MPH Vikings got the better of Stormbirds
when the two sides met in round one of the
competition which sparked a poor start to the
year for the club, with Stormbirds losing their
next two fixtures by a combined score of 18-0,
but Graham believes the league needed to be
guarded against a wounded Stormbirds side.
“I think everyone needs to be wary of Stormbirds because they haven’t really put out their
strongest team yet,” he said.
“The first round they put out a strong team
against us and we only clipped them 1-0 and I
think they’ll rattle some people.
“I’ve warned the boys against complacency
because they’ve had a rough run in the FFA cup
when they were playing with nine. When they
have 11 on the park they are a genuine threat.”
The two sides do battle in the late fixture tomorrow evening, from 7pm at Ross Park.
In the early fixture, Scorpions will be looking
to continue their unbeaten run when they take
on Celtic in a grand final rematch.
Scorpions are the only side not to have lost a
match across all competitions this year, including an impressive 4-1 win over Celtic.
Celtic meanwhile are starting to hit top form
after their slow start to the year with recent wins
over Stormbirds in the Premier League and
MPH Vikings in the FFA Cup showing that the
2016 premiers have the ability to challenge anyone on their day.
The two sides go head to head at Ross Park
from 5pm.
