The Muscogee (Creek) people were removed, like so many
others, from their ancestral home across the southern states
to Indian Territory, where they made a home out of necessity. The history of these people extends far back to their
ancestral Mississippian Mound Builders, continues through
the forming of the Muscogee Confederacy during European
contact, and their eventual removal. The Trail of Tears may
have ended where Tulsa was founded, but Tribal Government, art, language, and scholarship of the Muscogee people
continue. Experience the history and contemporary culture of

Get Your Kicks on
Route 66
Journey along the Mother
Road with Ken Busby, the self
professed Culture Czar of northeast Oklahoma. This country’s
most iconic highway connects
east to west from Chicago through
432 miles of Oklahoma including
down Tulsa’s 11th Street, eventually traveling into Texas, New
Mexico, and Arizona, ending at
the Santa Monica beach. “America’s Main Street” inspired music
from Bobby Troupe with his Get
Your Kicks on Route 66, the television show Route 66, and
of course John Steinbeck’s novel Grapes of Wrath and Jack
Kerouac’s On The Road. Blending knowledge of history and
culture, Busby will share many of the characters known for
their involvement including the ‘father’ of Route 66, Tulsa’s
Cyrus Avery. Route 66 landmarks are plentiful and will be
discussed, from the giant Blue Whale near Catoosa to the
“Cadillac Ranch” near Amarillo to the Wigwam Motel in
Holbrook, AZ. Special guest speakers, including Teresa Miller
and Michael Wallis, will focus on various unique features from
architecture to food along Route 66 to current day collectibles
including classic motel postcards, road signs, and even vintage
gasoline pumps.
Ken Busby is the ExecuƟve Director & CEO of the Route 66
Alliance. Previously, he served as ExecuƟve Director & CEO
of the Arts & HumaniƟes Council of Tulsa for twelve years.
Prior to that, Busby was the Director of Development for Tulsa

serving as Membership Director and Director of

a dual Bachelor of Arts degree in communicaƟon and French from the University of Tulsa. He

“Anything is possible one stroke

in the industry. This course will explore six independent

available, the filmmakers will join the OLLI class to answer
questions. Films include:

The Tablets of Tulsa
Time
The Southwest Tulsa Gateway to
Historic U.S. Route 66 has recently
been commemorated with four
plaques describing Tulsa’s unique
contributions to the story of this
famous road. The narrative begins
in 1836, traveling a dusty path with
members of the Five Civilized
Nations. A few decades later, the
‘War of Southern Aggression’ would
bring divisions, destruction, and
change to the face of Indian Territory.
Then railroads, following the same
path, cut into the land. Tent towns of
traders, merchants, and pioneers took
root on strips of railroad land. With
the beginning of the 20th century and
the discovery of oil, a pipeline was
initiated at both West Tulsa and the
Texas Gulf. Refineries were established in West Tulsa, and at the first
meeting of the U.S. Highway Association, a motion made U.S. Route
66 ‘The Main Street of America.’ It
was to become a road of desperation
and hope for Dust Bowl driven seekers of opportunity and a conduit for
military equipment and personnel
to supply the Great War. Today it
remains an active byway of industry
and tourism and a fascinating record
of local history as reflected in the
four historical plaques.
David M. Breed is the
author of the text on the
four historical plaques,
these “Tablets of Tulsa
Time.” He is a past ExecuƟve Director for Western
Neighbors, Inc., and Executive Secretary for the
Southwest Tulsa Chamber of Commerce. He
serves in a similar capacity with the Southwest
Tulsa Historical Society.
He has been involved

and development of the
Southwest Tulsa (now

Street initiative. David

Imam Ederer
Jan Figart presents Great Decisions, America’s largest discussion
program on world affairs. The program model involves reading
the Great Decisions Briefing Book, watching the DVD and meeting
to hear from the topic experts and discuss the most critical global
issues facing America today.
Middle East Alliances
As alliances in the region are constantly shifting, the U.S. has found
itself between a rock and a hard place. In a series of conflicts that
are far from being black-and-white, what can the U.S. do to secure
its interests in the region without causing further damage and
disruption? Topic Expert: Dr. Robert Donaldson, Former Tulsa
University President, Professor, Political Science, TU.
The United Nations
This year marks a halfway point in the organization’s global effort
to eradicate poverty, hunger and discrimination, as well as ensure
justice and dignity for all peoples. But as the UN’s 193 member
states look back at the success of the millennium development goals,
they also must assess their needs for its sustainable development
goals. Topic Expert: Professor Rodger Randle, Director of Center
for Study in Democracy and Culture; former Mayor of Tulsa.
Climate Change
In the past few years, the American public has become more aware
of the damage wrought by climate change. From droughts in the
west to extreme weather in the east, a rapidly changing climate
has already made its footprint in the United States. Topic Expert:
Jan Figart, Associate Director and Senior Planner, Community
Service Council of Greater Tulsa.
Cuba and the U.S.
The U.S. announced it has begun taking major steps to normalize
relations with Cuba. American and Cuban leaders today are trying
to bring a relationship, once defined by antithetical ideologies, into
the 21st century. Topic Expert: Professor Rodger Randle, Director
of Center for Study in Democracy and Culture; former Mayor
of Tulsa.
Migration
As a record number of migrants cross the Mediterranean Sea to
find refuge in Europe, the continent is struggling to come up with
an adequate response. Today, with the number of displaced people
at an all-time high, a number of world powers find themselves
facing a difficult question: how can they balance border security
with humanitarian concerns? Topic Expert: Jan Figart, Associate
Director, Senior Planner, Community Service Council of Tulsa.
The Rise of ISIS
Born out of an umbrella organization of Al-Qaeda in Iraq, the
so-called Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) burst onto the
international stage after it seized Fallujah in December 2013. Still,
the question remains: What is ISIS, and what danger does it pose
to U.S. interests? Topic Expert: Imam John Ederer, Islamic
Society of Tulsa.
