The narrative begins in 1836, traveling a dusty path with members of the Five Civilized Nations. A few decades later, the ‘War of Southern Aggression’ would bring divisions, destruction, and change to the face of Indian Territory. Then railroads, following the same path, cut into the land. Tent towns of traders, merchants, and pioneers took root on strips of railroad land. With the beginning of the 20th century and the discovery of oil, a pipeline was initiated at both West Tulsa and the Texas Gulf. Refineries were established in West Tulsa, and at the first meeting of the U.S. Highway Association, a motion made U.S. Route 66 ‘The Main Street of America.’ It was to become a road of desperation and hope for Dust Bowl driven seekers of opportunity and a conduit for military equipment and personnel to supply the Great War. Today it remains an active byway of industry and tourism and a fascinating record of local history as reflected in the four historical plaques. David M. Breed is the author of the text on the four historical plaques, these “Tablets of Tulsa Time.” He is a past ExecuƟve Director for Western Neighbors, Inc., and Executive Secretary for the Southwest Tulsa Chamber of Commerce. He serves in a similar capacity with the Southwest Tulsa Historical Society. He has been involved with development of the Southwest Tulsa Revitalization Plan and participated in the structure and development of the Southwest Tulsa (now Tulsa Route 66) Main Street initiative. David served eight years as a mayoral appointee on the City of Tulsa’s Historic PreservaƟon Commission. In addiƟon, for 23 years, David conducted and narrated day-long urban/ historical Tulsa tours for Leadership Tulsa.
