Each member has a unique personality and distinctive gifts. Like strands of a precious tapestry, we work together and accomplish extraordinary things in a spirit of love. In the busyness of each day, I sometimes forget to thank the many people who make a difference in my life and the lives of many others. So I take this opportunity on behalf of the Board of “With HOPE Directors and staff, to thank you for your there’s help and faith in HOPE, love, and support. May your service, kindness and generosity keep with your help opening the doors of HOPE for greater there’s HOPE!” abundance and unlimited good. You hold a very special place in my heart. e celebrate 15 years of service to the community by giving God thanks for the dedicated people who use their talents to fulfill HOPE’s mission to Help Other People Everyday. We are grateful for our Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, donors, and supporters. Without you, Hope Outreach Center, Inc. would not be able to help so many. Our world is filled with suffering: natural disasters, man-made disasters, and human tragedies. At times the “bad news” seems overwhelming and endless. It is easy to lose sight of the goodness that exists. Our community is filled with compassionate people who generously respond to the needs of others. These individuals and families recognize that as members of one human family we have a responsibility to care for each other, look beyond boundaries of disagreement, and pursue the common good. When our brothers and sisters suffer, we hurt too. This spirit of solidarity inspires us to volunteer, donate, and use our talents to help people who need a hand up. We commit ourselves and match our talents and resources to causes that resonate in our hearts. In the process, we bring God’s love to our communities and experience joy and peace. This Summer, may I ask you to please remember the many families who are experiencing difficult circumstances due to job loss, disability, health crisis or other emergencies. We urgently need your support to provide the many services they so desperately need to make it through these trying times. HOPE has touched 6597 people’s lives in the 1st half of 2010! Celebrating 15 Years of Service to Our Community! Hope_Newsletter_P3.indd 1 7/26/10 8:26:32 AM Thoughts from Sr. Germana’s “Locanda” E very day, desperate people come to the Center for help. Many are hurt by broken family relationships. Elderly clients suffer because their children neglect them in their time of need. Fractured relationships can trigger depression and make people vulnerable to unhealthy behaviors. Sadly, shattered human relationships often lead to poverty, especially for people living on the margins. I often wonder how much poverty would decrease if society focused more on strengthening family relationships. Whether we are poor or not, the greatest gift we can give each other is to build a strong family life. Healthy families have the strength to overcome life’s obstacles. Dear God: Help our families to love each other the way you love each of us. Strengthen them and give them courage to endure the difficulties of life. Inspire them to help others so the whole world will come to know you and love you. AMEN! New Volunteer Coordinator! W elcome Mary Blake Riester! Mary Blake has joined our team and has responsibility for recruiting, training and scheduling volunteers based on their interests and service opportunities. Mary Blake has spent the past 5 years volunteering in leadership roles for other non profits. She knows how to organize events and rally volunteers for a great cause. She was looking for a position that well matched her organizational, leadership, multitasking and communication skills and found HOPE Outreach Center! “I’m amazed at the huge volunteer base at HOPE. I don’t know of any organization of this size that has only 4.5 employees and carries out their services with the help and support of hundreds of volunteers. It is wonderful that people can see how they make a difference immediately just by visiting the Center.” Call Mary Blake today or email her at [email protected] if you would like to volunteer! There are many service opportunities available and we need YOU! Back to School Drive The annual back to school drive is in full swing. This year we need over 300 backpacks filled with school supplies and a reading book for each child! To learn how you can participate please call the Center or visit www.hopeoutreachfl.org for grade level lists and other details. The Thrill of Success Each week HOPE volunteers meet with students struggling academically, to tutor and assist with homework and projects. Together they accomplished an amazing feat - every student in the program improved academically! Congratulations to our volunteer tutors and participating students! Special congratulations to Coralys, a fourth grader at Fox Trail Elementary who with the help of her tutor, Bernadette Falciglia, won 1st place for her “INVENTION”. She built a gadget that turns the pages of a book for someone who has no hands. Could it be the makings of a future entrepreneur in our midsts?…Way to go Coralys! Hope_Newsletter_P3.indd 2 7/26/10 8:26:34 AM Volunteering With HOPE, A Family Affair N o one was more surprised to discover the vast number of hungry people in Davie than Don & Shirley & Cozine. Though they had belonged to St. David Catholic Church for 20 years they really did not know much about HOPE Outreach Center. After donating canned food to St. David Catholic School at the request of their granddaughters, they decided to visit the Center. “When we saw so many families in need, that bothered us,” Shirley remarked. The empty shelves in the food pantry disturbed them even more. The Cozine family sprang into action by: Don & Shirley’s commitment to helping others seems to have rubbed off. Recently the whole family joined Sr. Germana to clean up the yard of an elderly client facing fines because she was physically and financially unable to comply with city citations. Since then Katie, now 16 and a student at Archbishop McCarthy High, has adopted many of HOPE’s elderly clients. Each month she mails personal cards to let them know she cares. She was elated when one of her “pen pals” responded with appreciation. Both Katie and Sarah continue to, “Do whatever it takes to support HOPE,” a commitment that brings great joy to the Cozine family. ♥ Helping their granddaughters organize food drives in their neighborhood ♥ Paying their grandchildren to do chores so they could purchase food for HOPE “It is such a powerful experience to be a part of HOPE Outreach Center,” Shirley stated. “You have to see what these people do with the little they have. They serve so many people with so few resources!” ♥ Involving the entire family in purchasing and filling backpacks ♥ Adopting families for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and Katie agrees. “Being involved with HOPE has changed the way I see things. All I want to do is help in some way.” ♥ Soliciting donations from people around the country to purchase food for the pantry. “We wanted Katie and Sarah, to learn that it was not only their grandparents’ responsibility to help people who are poor, but also theirs!” $124,554 food distributed by HOPE as of June 30, 2010 Thank you Cozine family for becoming part of the HOPE family. You are a real blessing! With your help there’s HOPE! 111 senior families participating in HOPE’s CARE Program 24,782 lbs. of food donated thru the United Way of Broward’s Project Lifeline!
