The Official SUNALTA Community Newsletter I MAY 2015 7 COUNCILLOR, WARD 8 EVAN WOOLLEY P.O. Box 2100, Station M Calgary, AB, Canada T2P 2M5 Phone: 403-268-2430 The Future of Secondary Suites in Ward 8 On May 11 Calgary City Council will vote on a proposal to reform and improve the process by which homeowners in wards 7, 8, 9 and 11 can build safe, legal secondary suites. Currently, many who wish to build a legal suite must first apply directly to Council to change their land use designation before being able to move on to the development and building permit stage. Partly as a result of this clunky and burdensome procedure, approximately 16,000 Calgarians have decided to skip the proper process entirely and build illegal, often very unsafe suites, about which the City knows little. In fact, there may be many more than 16,000 illegal suites – but because they are illegal, we just don’t know. We do know, however, that only 550 citizens have gone through the hoops and built legal ones. The bylaw amendment to come before Council in May will remove the first step of going to Council, and it’s just one part of a larger reform. At the end of March we approved the recommendations of a Council working group to make the legal secondary suites process easier, faster and more accountable. These recommendations include a registry, reduced red tape, and better enforcement. Now, I’ll be the first to admit that secondary suites reform in Calgary is not an easy subject. While I campaigned on this issue, and have fought hard since taking office to cut red tape, improve and expand our affordable housing supply, and bring thousands of unsafe living spaces up to code, I still recognize that the issue is complex, difficult and divisive. Many residents in areas with R-1 or R-C1 zoning fear that their neighbourhoods will change irrevocably, that the increased density will cause traffic problems, or that parking will become more and more restricted. But these things are already occurring because of illegal suites, and as a result we have a much harder time dealing with them. I believe that the reforms that have passed and those that are being proposed are fair and reasonable, and form a good start in making secondary suites better for homeowners, renters and communities. Indeed, if 8 Council votes for the bylaw amendment to reform the secondary suites process on May 11, we will be acting upon the advice of dozens of reports, and upon the evidence from virtually every other major city in North America. JOIN US for an e vening ‘p resentation & con versation’ on: We’ve been behind the ball on secondary suites for far too long. It’s time to move forward, move intelligently, and move now. The Olmsted Legacy & Calgary’s Urban Communities: I hope you’ll support me on this reform. If so, or if not, I want to hear from you. As always, you can contact my office by phone (403-268-2430), email ([email protected]) or on my website (www.calgary.ca/ward8). The Father of Landscape Architecture, Frederick Law Olmsted BY THE LIGHT OF THE MOON Gardening by the phases of the moon May 6 First Quarter (waxing) Moonlight is strong, encouraging leaf growth. It is a good time for planting, especially two days before the full moon. Take cuttings from plants you wish to propagate. Fertilize as close to the full moon as possible. May 14 Full Moon (waning) As the moon wanes, the energy is drawing down. Strong gravitational pull but moonlight is decreasing putting energy into the roots. May 21 Last Quarter (waning) Decreased gravitational pull and moonlight. A resting period. Take cuttings from plants you wish to propagate. Dry herbs, flowers and fruit. If you want to control growth or encourage rooting, perform the necessary activities during the waning moon. May 28 New Moon (waxing) Increasing moonlight, lunar gravity pulls water up encouraging plant growth and proliferation. Grafting, transplanting, re-potting, and watering. Gather herbs used for essential oils. Oil content is more concentrated at this time. Last Quarter May 21 When: Thursday, May 21 6:30 - 8:00 pm New Moon May 28 Location: Scarboro Community Hall 1727 - 14 Ave SW Through Frederick Law Olmsted, the practices of landscape architecture and environmental design were founded. Having designed such famous parks as Central Park in New York City and Mount Royal in Montreal, his legacy was carried on by the Olmsted Firm which was hired by the Canadian Pacific Railway to design the Calgary communities of Scarboro, Sunalta, South Mount Royal and parts of Bridgeland! These remain examples of the Olmsted principle of “creating a feeling of community through environmental design”. A strong community design facilitates a strong community bond. Please plan to attend. Common names include lemon grass, barbed wire grass, citronella grass or fever grass amongst many others. It is commonly used in teas, soups, curries, soap, perfumes, and as a medical herb. Citronella oil is used commonly in mosquito repellent products. Lemongrass tea is made by using two to three chopped stalks steeped in a pot of nearly boiling water. This tea is principally taken as a remedy for digestive problems, diarrhea and stomachache. It relaxes the muscles of the stomach and gut and relieves cramping pains and flatulence problems. It also eases menstrual cramps. It has been linked to increasing the body’s ability to repair damaged connective tissue such as cartilage, ligaments and tendons and is thus recommended for these types of injuries. It helps in reducing stress by its calming effect and promotes a good night’s sleep. This herb is said to be helpful in alleviating anxiety and depressive symptoms. It helps to strengthen the nervous system and may thus be useful for conditions such as Parkinson’s disease. It has antioxidants like beta-carotene that scientists believe can help prevent cancer. A small study done at the University of Wisconsin revealed that some people taking prepared lemongrass capsules, about 140 mg daily for three months, noticed a reduction in cholesterol levels and that their cholesterol levels returned to their original high levels when they stopped taking the preparation. This indicates that lemongrass may help reduce cholesterol in certain individuals. However, more research is needed. Lemongrass oil has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. A massage using this oil soothes aching muscles. However, it may produce allergic reactions in some people and may also interact with certain medications, so it is best taken after talking to a health care practitioner. Kosha Vaidya, MBBS, CH CHT Mount Royal School These past couple months at Mount Royal have been busy for all our hardworking students. Expectations for Grade 7 students are higher than ever! We are all super determined to get great marks and practice good study habits. The grade nines have been working hard and are really good role models for our grade 7 and 8 students. At Mount Royal, we like to have fun! All the students are very fortunate to have cool speakers, events, special science labs and clubs to participate in. We have been participating in some super awesome experiences. One of the cool things we are participating in is a university of Calgary athletic study. Every day the students write down what physical activities they did the previous day, whether it’s jogging, sports, active games, or a simple walk around the block. The students get tested on their ability of being an athlete; they had to balance on a pad, run back and forth for a long period of time, see how high they can jump, and be weight and height tested. One of these fun things we grades sevens have been learning about is the foundations of our country and the war on the Plains of Abraham. On March 12th, 2015, 7a and 7b went outside and re-enacted the war on the Plains of Abraham between the French and British for colony territory in the sports court in the back of Mount Royal where skittles represented the lives of the ancestor soldiers who fought to make our country what it is today. “The British won and the French lost and the people who died had to lie on the ground” says a grade 7 student. Moving on to the role models of our school, the grade 9s had two fun and influencing guest speakers come to our school: On January 26th, Canadian astronaut Robert Thirsk came to Mount Royal to teach the Grade 9 students about his experiences in space. He talked about his time in space and how important and interesting his job was. On March 12th, a guest speaker named JJ Boucher came to Mount Royal to teach the Grade 9s about the Circle of Justice. Circle of Justice is, for example when someone does something illegal, they have to go to court and prove themselves innocent or go to jail, but the Circle of Justice is an organization that connects with people to understand their feelings, thoughts and actions and why they did what they did. We have had a great year so far at Mount Royal with our fun activities and all our guest speakers. We know that the rest of our year continues to be as fun and interesting. - Written by students in 7A 12 MAY 2015 I Great News Publishing I Call 403-263-3044 for advertising opportunities Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre Alberta Health Care AHS Addictions Hotline ATCO Gas – 24 Hour Emergency Calgary HEALTH LINK 24/7 Calgary Police – Non Emergency Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter Child Abuse Hotline Child Safe Canada Distress/Crisis Line ENMAX – Power Trouble Kids Help Phone Poison Centre - Alberta Suicide Crisis Line HOSPITALS / URGENT CARE Alberta Children’s Hospital Foothills Hospital Peter Lougheed Centre Rockyview General Hospital Sheldon M.
