Year 13 Leavers Ball
Wellington Barn, Calstone, provided the perfect backdrop to the Year 13 students’ Leavers Ball, the girls looking
resplendent in their beautiful dresses and the boys looking very smart in their sharp suits.
An excellent meal was served followed by wonderful desserts! The disco then got started and students and staff
danced the night away!
A big thank you to everyone who helped with the organisation of the evening and good luck to Year 13 and Year 11 on
their exams.
Year 11 Celebration Ball
Year 11s arrived by every mode of transport imaginable including a tractor, tank, double decker bus, motorbike,
horse box, motor cycles and even a horse and carriage.
All the students looked dazzling. A wonderful evening had by all at Grittleton House.
Ten Tors 2017
Over the weekend of the 6th and 7th May 28 Sheldon students successfully
completely the Ten Tors Challenge on
Dartmoor. It was the best participation we
have had, with Sheldon lucky enough to
secure 5 teams for the event and one of the
most represented institutions. Twelve Year
10 students took on the 35 Mile challenge
in two teams, both successfully completing
in very good time. Twelve Year 11 and 12
students took on the 45 Mile challenge, also
completing comfortably. In addition we had
6 Year 12 and 13 students taking on the 55
Mile challenge, a hugely demanding test of
endurance, who completed in an excellent
time. Walking from 7am on the Saturday morning until as late as 11pm on the
Saturday evening, then getting up at 5am the next day; all teams were finished by just after 2pm, the earliest all teams
have completed. Ten Tors is a real test of mental and physical endurance, ability to work well in a team and cope with
a pressured and challenging environment. All those who completed deserve massive congratulations, not only for
completing, but then still having the spirit to cross the finish lines in a variety of fantastic fancy dress.
A massive well done to Megan Heath (35), Natasha Hole-Jones (35), Owen Cook (35), Emily Whitham (35), Ewan
Turnbull (35), Jack Timberlake (35), Jess Warn-Bromley (35), Naima Islam (35), Jerry Shirazian(35), Tom Young (35),
Alice Bennett (45), Poppy Jabelman (45), Harvey Johnson (45), Joe Hunt (45) Matt Jones (45), Jack Joiner (45), Ed Dyer
(45), Toby Bond (45), Kit Stainthorpe (45), Jordan Cole (45), Tom Harris (45), James Nicholson (45), Anna Sheppard
(55) and Morgan Stevens (55). A special well done goes to Fleur-Jade Howson (55), George Rich (55), Rosie Bailey (55)
and Marcus James (55) who became the first Sheldon students to complete all three events.
For anyone interested in next year’s training it begins again in November – in the meantime speak to Mr Page or Mrs
Goldsmith if you are interested.
Mr Page
Congratulations to Poppy Daly from Year 11 on her London College of Music results. Poppy gained a
Distinction...96% for her Music Theatre Grade 7 exam. Her teacher Hillary Newman told Poppy that it is only the
second time that one of her students had attained 96%. Well done Poppy!
SHELDON SCHOOL’S NEWSLETTER
HEAD-ITORIAL
The last two weeks have seen Year 11s and then Year 13s depart, as they embark on their important examinations. The
GCSEs are now in full swing and the A Levels will begin in earnest after the half term break. As part of marking the end
of their education, both year groups had a celebration ball and both were blessed with excellent weather so that hairdos,
dresses, suits and all their finery could be properly admired. The respective occasions at Grittleton House and Wellington
Barn were excellent and highlighted just what lovely young people they are. We now hope that they will come up trumps
in their examinations and wish them every success.
When we return, we will be no doubt be caught up in the run-in to the General Election, which takes place on the Thursday.
As I write, the election campaigning has quite rightly taken a back seat following the shocking and very sad events in
Manchester. The deaths of so many young people plus scores injured rather puts everything else into perspective, but the
spirit shown by the people of Manchester demonstrates that normal events must continue, even if the mood is inevitably
more sombre. At Sheldon, we are looking forward to our own Question Time Hustings in the Sixth Form Centre: all three
parliamentary candidates for Chippenham will be put under scrutiny from Year 12 student Toby Shirazian who has organised
the whole event and will be chairing a debate. The assembled audience will also be putting their questions, which I hope
will inform them ahead of voting on June 8th. Temperatures are set to rise for the end of the week and I am imagining that
the exchanges will be heated too. An exciting way to end the half term.

Year 10 History Trip to Berlin
Last weekend, a group of 40 Year 10s travelled to Berlin to learn about
German 20th Century history, specifically during the Second World War
and the Cold War. We visited several significant places including the
Topography of Terror, Hitler’s bunker, Sachsenhausen Concentration
Camp, the German History Museum, and the Stasi Prison. Our personal
favourites were the memorials to persecuted Jews, Homosexuals and
Gypsies during the Holocaust; we felt that they were thoughtful and that
the architects were brilliant in the way that they represented each group.
Overall, the trip was very well organised. We all came away having learned
a lot about German history and considered many important issues, such as the persecution of
minorities. It was an excellent supplement to the GCSE course.

The Governing Body is pleased
to announce that Sue Brentnall

Congratulations to Sue and

their willingness to play an active

For instance, the website gives very clear advice on
what else your child might be able to access on the internet
via their games console, and what measures can be put in
place to counter inappropriate or potentially unsafe use.
With exam season very much upon us, it also suggests suitable
strategies for insuring distractions from computer games are
kept to a minimum.
