Created by Ronvé O’Daniel, The LAB Workshop is a creative songwriting and
performance intensive, focused on preparing and cultivating skills of young aspiring
writers, actors and performers. In a time where performers are required to have multiple
skill sets, The LAB is the breeding ground to develop these skills.
SAMPLE CURRICULUM:
CLASS ONE: CREATIVE WRITING I: MUSICAL THEATRE LYRIC WRITING
OVERVIEW: Students will learn the basics of musical theatre songwriting and apply it to their
own creative writing and performance. Students will explore song structure, melody, rhyme and
other necessary tools to guide their process.
SETUP AND SUPPLIES:
Length of class: Full length class: 3 hours.
Size of class: 20-30 students.
Materials needed: Paper, pencil, playback system – Phone with music playing
capabilities, tablet device, speakers to amplify sound, stereo system, etc.
Optional: video playback device (access to YouTube)
CLASS STRUCTURE:
1. Introduction of Instructor – go into detail about experience.
2. Types of Musical Theatre songs: I Want Song, Ballad, Soliloquy, Metaphor Song, List
Song, Comedic Song, Story Song, 11 O’Clock Number – Play examples and discuss.
Break down songs – discuss song structure, action, form, etc.
3. Warm Up – Stream of consciousness writing exercise.
4. Teach Scansion – What is scansion?
5. ACTIVITY: Remix a nursery rhyme with same scansion pattern.
6. Teach song structure, rhyme, hooks, and action. Breakdown songs – discuss examples.
7. ACTIVITY: “Step Up Ya Vocab” (Finding words that rhyme and creating your own
rhyming rolodex.) Discuss “Perfect Rhyme” versus “Imperfect Rhyme”.
8. BIG ACTIVITY: Write an original Musical Theatre song of instructor’s choosing.
Instructor will assign the type of song that will be written as well as the subject matter.
Focus on Objective/Intention. Who are you speaking to and what are you looking to get
from whoever you’re speaking to? Apply song structure, hook, rhyme and action.
Note – The class layout above is meant for one 3 hour class. If class is spread out over the
course of multiple days, the class can be adjusted accordingly.
