Dear Iroquois Families, I am happy to report that this has been one of the best starts to a school year we’ve ever had. On behalf of the staff and the school district I thank each of you for your support in making this a great beginning. I also welcome all our new families. As we move into our third week I want to remind families of a few items. The first is MAP testing will still occur next Monday and Tuesday. I know it seems early to MAP test but the Fall MAP scores are critical for first quarter instructional planning. Transportation pickup and drop off times require patience and communication. I want to thank everyone for their active participation in keeping those times of day calm and safe. Families that rarely have problems are those that make plans in advance and communicate those plans to everyone in the family. Successful plans usually include where and when (time) to meet, and also having a back up plan in case you are late or not in the pick up spot you typically are in. Please take some time to verbally discuss the plan your family has for pick up and drop off times. Busing is different at Iroquois than most schools because ICS is a community school and we service ALL of Des Plaines. We are not a neighborhood school and being located on the South side of town really impacts our ability to have short transportation times. It is likely that our district will be adding a sixth bus to reduce overcrowding and long run times; however this will not happen until the second week of August. Once I have confirmation I will communicate directly with all families who will benefit from this addition. Finally, today I met with all middle school students to discuss dress code for school. As a father of a freshman I can assure you that I am very aware of the dilemma one faces when trying to guide fashion choices with a teen. We have some basic expectations at ICS regarding clothing. When clothing choices interfere with other students’ ability to learn, students will be asked to change their clothing. Parent contact will also be made in order to support best choices for school. Clothing that disrupts the school environment includes: gang related or affiliated clothing, alcohol and cigarette advertisements, crude or non-‐school appropriate logos and sayings, and clothing that exposes or displays private parts of the body or undergarments. What students wear to school is a decision. If the clothing is inappropriate for school, students will be sent to the office to call home for a change of clothing or offered a gym uniform if parents cannot bring school appropriate attire. Your support in this matter is greatly appreciated. Respectfully, Dr. Michael Amadei Principal July 28th
