13.1.17 Irregular shapes Coral PDF File

Activity
This week our mathematical focus has changed towards shape. We began by exploring 2D shapes and how we could
use a shape’s properties to define and name it. This was particularly useful when we were presented with irregular
shapes. Often we see shapes in their ‘regular’ form – this is where all the sides are the same length. Can you name the
shapes below?
Following on from this we saw how some shapes are symmetrical. This means that they have two halves that are
exactly alike. We tested a range of shapes by folding them in half and sorting them into symmetrical and not
symmetrical (asymmetrical). You can have a go at completing this snowflake – make sure each half is exactly alike!
In Computing we were again using Textease Turtle. We were given different
algorithms to input into the computer these would program the turtle to draw a
shape. With our newfound shape-naming prowess we wrote down the shapes we had
drawn.
We would like to welcome Miss Waters to Coral class - she will be with us until halfterm!

You could practise your shape and symmetry skills by playing this game
http://www.topmarks.co.uk/symmetry/symmetry-matching
You could do a shape walk around your house and write a list of the shapes you find. Remember to spell
them correctly.

Challenge 2
How many sides would 5
triangles have?
Can you show your working out?
How many sides would 5
octagons have?
Can you show your working out?
Challenge 3
How many
squares can you
see in this
picture?
Our handwriting is improving greatly, but as practise makes perfect we thought it would be helpful to
keep up the good work…
