EMPATHY (EM-PUH-THEE) As the love of his life dumped him, Sarah felt so much empathy for John that she actually felt his pain, and her own heart broke a little, too. WARM-UP Describe a time when you have felt empathy for someone? How did you identify with their feelings? Be specific, and don’t forget to use the vocab word in your response. They were very close, and she was very upset, but I tried to comfort her by thinking of how I felt when I lost my grandparents, and just trying to listen, rather than talk. Please repeat after me….. EPHEMERAL (IH-FEM-ER-UHL) MySpace proved to be an ephemeral social network, as Facebook and Twitter soon took over, and rendered it obsolete. EPHEMERAL: (ADJ.) SHORT-LIVED, OR FLEETING Synonyms: Antonyms: PLEASE REPEAT AFTER ME… •The definition of the word ephemeral is short-lived, or fleeting. CONNECTION: Name at least two examples of bands, artists, athletes, or celebrities whose fame proved to be ephemeral. Why were their careers so short-lived? Example: I think that the cast members from the Jersey Shore have experienced ephemeral fame because they really don’t have anything positive to be remembered for. EXTENUATING (IK-STEN-YOO-EY-TING) After the student experienced the loss of a family member, the teacher deemed the circumstances extenuating, and let her make retake the exam. Extenuating (adj.): serving to make an offense appear less serious. Synonyms: Antonyms: PLEASE REPEAT AFTER ME… •The definition of the word extenuating is serving to make an offense appear less serious. WARM-UP What is the craziest extenuating circumstance that you have ever heard someone use on a teacher to try to get out of doing their homework? Describe it!
