In the conclusion of the two-part story that began on “Chicago Fire,” the Intelligence
Unit races to find those responsible for the hospital bombing. Lindsay and Antonio
(Sophia Bush, Jon Seda) look for a connection to a Syrian diplomat who was receiving a transplant, but they find none. Olinsky (Elias Koteas) finds a promising lead,
but the team has to work fast, as there may be more bombs. Marina Squerciati also
stars in the new episode “8:30 PM.”

Oliver reflects on
‘Last Week’
“Last Week
Tonight With John
Oliver” premieres
Sunday on HBO.
John Oliver’s HBO series, “Last Week Tonight,” premieres Sunday, April 27. And a month before the show
would bow, Oliver hadn’t a specific clue as to what he would be doing opening night.
“It is an odd situation,” Oliver says, taking in a majestic view of the Empire State Building. “The jokes
we will tell on the first show have not happened yet, but we are building a machine to be flexible enough to
trivialize vastly important stories.”
Though he has goals and a strong concept, Oliver could not say for sure what his show will be because it is
predicated on the news.
“We did our first technical show last night,” he says. “I did GM, the recall of 5 million cars, the ignition
problem they knew about. It was between 12 and 303 deaths. They say 12; 12 is their defense.”
In a month, this could be bigger news, or it could have faded. Oliver did not know – no one does – but
he’s relishing taking the news as it comes.
“The idea is we can do anything,” Oliver said. “We are not going to get told to not do anything. You have
to survive by your own moral compass – and mine was probably broken in 1995 – and an innate sense of
decency, and mine was probably lost when I was 6.”
Oliver did a terrific job when he filled in as host of “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” last summer, and
he credits that stint for leading to the new show. The Sunday show will be “as loose as possible,” he says.
Oliver isn’t planning to do a monologue but wants “pre-taped segments because we have extra time,” he
says. “We can make it a virtue rather than a curse. It should be possible to be reactive to stories.”
For instance, given Russian President Vladimir Putin’s occupation of Crimea, it’s not inconceivable that he
might fancy annexing another country. Oliver ponders the possibilities.
“Putin could wake up and say, ‘Warsaw looks good this time of year,’ ” Oliver says and starts laughing at
the prospect – the comedic prospects, not potential wars.
“As we have been gaming out hypothetical shows, we are working out which stories go away because the
meat is picked off their bones or if there is something to tackle, whether there is still a deeper story,” he says.
As far as guests, Oliver does not want reality show contestants, starlets or the usual red carpet brigade. He
does, though, want policymakers.
Had the show been on the week he was chatting, Oliver would have tried to have on a Ukrainian
ambassador or someone in the NSA.
“I like to take serious things and treat them with none of the gravity they deserve,” he says.

•What sort of a person is Meg Fitch, a tech
CEO raising her sister’s child?
She’s a tough cookie. She’s probably one of the
tougher women I’ve played. She’s much more
mainstream that I’ve played before. I’m thinking
about various other roles ... like Miss Havisham
from “Great Expectations,” Stella Gibson from
“The Fall,” and Scully (from “The X-Files”), all
the tough, complicated women that I’ve played
... she’s probably the most mainstream of them.
That’s interesting, in and of itself, to play a
contemporary, powerful American woman.
•Do you know any women like her?
She’s coming from Washington, but from what I
understand, it’s a different world in Washington
that I’m not familiar with, but it’s hopefully
something that I can intuit accurately enough.
But I know a lot of strong women, and I’ve met
a few in the business world and stronger women
in the creative arts. I think I’ve met a couple of
women that could be her sisters. I think Meg
commands that kind of attention.
•What’s it like to play a woman like that?
Only one other time have I played a character
who would command that attention walking into
a room full of very powerful people in their own
right. That’s an interesting power to have; it’s a
fun power to have.
You put it on when you’re on set, but it’s all
in the world of make-believe. The heads are
turning, the backs are straightening, have been
told to do so. It’s not suddenly because I get to
behave this way, that people go “Woo!”
Meet alternate
‘Mother’ ending on DVD
Q: Is it true that another version
of the ending of “How I Met Your
Mother” was filmed and will be
available on the DVD set? – Gary
David, Jupiter, Fla.
A: There will be an alternate-ending option,
and according to series co-creator and
executive producer Carter Bays, it very well
could have ended up as the one that was
shown on the air when the Jason Segelstarring CBS sitcom concluded its nineseason run last month. It was between that and the one that did
air, both of which were ready to go ... and you can judge for
yourself which you prefer when both Season 9 individually and
a complete series set are issued on disc this fall.
Q: On March 29, the season finale
of “When Calls the Heart” aired on
Hallmark Channel. Will this series
be continued? – Elem Freeman,
Elverson, Pa.
A: An official renewal hadn’t been issued
yet at this writing, but every indication is
that the Erin Krakow-starring show will
get a Season 2, cemented by the fact that
the finale hit a series-high rating. That’s the
kind of growth network executives look for.
Also, Hallmark Channel officials didn’t hesitate to note “the
incredible outpouring of support from dedicated fans on
social media.” That, too, is a major factor in keeping a show
going these days. Hallmark is a relative newcomer to the
original series game, so anything that gives a show that sort of
audience traction isn’t likely to be dismissed.
