quietness
AKE – BUZZ, SQUEAK & RATTLE
Car drivers react in an extremely sensitive way
to any distracting ambient noises in their
vehicle's interior. Today, noise design and
elaborate vehicle acoustics with negligible
noise levels have become the norm across all
vehicle classes. The noise analysis developed
by AKE-technologies makes it possible to
detect and eliminate potential problem areas
in good time.
2
The design of quiet sounds
In recent years, the automotive and supply industry
has witnessed tremendous advances in technology
that have resulted in the vehicle interior becoming
ever quieter, so that customers now increasingly
perceive noises as annoying, whereas they used
to be obscured. Introducing a new material always
bears a certain level of risk as you never know for
certain beforehand how this material will affect
the noise level in the vehicle's interior. Worse yet,
certain materials will give rise to such undesirable
noises as squeaking or creaking when interacting with other materials. Thanks to our extensive
range of services we are in a position to offer you
the products necessary to satisfy the requirements
of your customers in the area of noise acoustics both now and in the future. With our noise analysis
and solution centre, we have created a dedicated
facility that enables us to graphically present the
latest technologies and services to our customers.

A World First: High Power Shaker
Patented technology: High Power Shaker (HPS)
The High Power Shaker offers high-tech in an ultra-small package. The HPS boasts the exceptionally
low height and weight of 25 cm and 20 kg, respectively. Its tiny footprint makes it ten times smaller than
any conventional electrodynamic shaker. Despite its minuscule size, it delivers 6 kilonewtons, making it
exceedingly more powerful than the competition.
4
Our patented High Power Shaker is a world first in the field of disruptive
noise prevention and detection. The testing bay is used to excite the
vehicle in the bay such that the simulated driving profiles match a drive on
the road. This allows for disruptive noises to be detected and eliminated
in good time.
The High Power Shaker (HPS) is a newly developed,
high performance mobile shaker for the excitation
of vehicles or materials. Generating an impressive
6 kilonewtons of excitation power, the HPS is merely 25 centimetres tall and weighs just 20 kilograms.
Its tiny footprint makes it roughly ten times smaller than any conventional electrodynamic shaker.
Its compact size turns this shaker into a versatile
tool suitable for use in various production environments. Possible applications include subjecting
spring-mounted loads of around 3.5 tons – typical
of luxury cars or SUVs – to realistic vibrations with
real-time control. Even the subsequent integration
into existing test and production lines is a cinch.
The space-saving design of the HPS earns it the
title of the world’s only mobile shaker system. Exceptionally easy to transport, the HPS can be used
anywhere in the world and under any climatic conditions, which translates to analysis results that are
even more significant.
The use of accelerometers mounted on the bodywork via magnets means all movements of the vehicle can be recorded, allowing for the generation
of a so-called 'Drive File’ during a real test drive
along a stretch of rough road. The use of HPS now
makes it possible to accurately induce the same
excitations in the vehicle under laboratory conditions as previously on the test track. The advantage:
Any distracting secondary effects, such as wind,
motor or rolling noises, are completely eliminated.
Plus, the vehicle under testing does not have to
be driven for an extra number of kilometres. Another advantage is that the road profiles can be
reproduced with 100% accuracy - as often as you
require. This offers the added benefit of identifying all relevant noises and taking the appropriate
preventive measures in good time and ahead of the
start of series production.
The new shaker technology enables low-cost road
simulations, thus reducing the number of costly
test drives. Better still, the mobile HPS engineered
by AKE-technologies can be operated by a single
member of your staff. This feature makes the use of
the HPS particularly cost-effective.
Other areas of application are reliability tests, noise
analyses and product inspections.

Extra-low-noise operation
Can be controlled by one operator
By adding a vibrating table made of carbon we managed to take our
component shaker to an even higher level of performance and efficiency.
Producing a positive effect on all parameters, the material properties of
carbon are bound to deliver superior effectiveness when it comes to
defecting and preventing disruptive noises.
The EvoCarb is set apart by a completely revised
design that now includes a patented vibrating table
made of carbon.
The carbon, thanks to its specific structure, affords
the system an exceptionally low weight. Despite its
low weight, the material is distinguished by its outstanding rigidity and perfect stability. What is more,
carbon is 4 times more durable than aluminium. As
an added advantage, the material is also perfectly
resistant to corrosion and temperature. The heat
expansion of the material is barely measurable.
These unrivalled properties of the carbon material
have an immediate positive effect on our new component shaker. The vibrating table we incorporated
into our shaker is made exclusively of carbon fibre.
The use of this material slashes the weight of the
table from formerly 60 kg to 20 kg, resulting in a
tremendous boost in performance. This weight reduction makes it possible to test components with
a dead weight that can now be higher than ever
before. In addition, the rigidity and extraordinary
durability of the carbon guarantee a power transmission into the component that is of enormous
magnitude and precision.
Highly resistant to corrosion and environmental
degradation, the material used in our patented
shaker makes the shaker perfectly suitable for use
in a climatic chamber. This level of aptitude, in turn,
allows for simulation tests under all kinds of conditions. Boasting a space-saving design, our actuator
delivers unparalleled performance in the smallest
of spaces, making it versatile enough for a host of
different applications.
Our EvoCarb allows for the testing of a large variety
of components that are used in various different
industries. Our shakers are equally well suited for
testing components and assemblies that originate
in the automotive or in the air and space industry
and can even be used for white goods.
The intricate design of the EvoCarb allows you to
raise the centre section of the vibrating table separately. Smaller components can be tested without
the need to oscillate the entire table. In this position, the small vibrating plate is given additional
support to ensure that the power is still transmitted
with perfect efficiency.
In spite of its singular capabilities, the EvoCarb
is whisper quiet while in operation. Its negligible
noise output makes it possible to pinpoint potentially disruptive noises and enables our customers
to find the appropriate solutions at an early stage.

High Power Shaker
Technical details
Frequency / Hz
from the controller through the amplifier can be
transmitted perfectly to the High Power Shaker, allowing for test results that are of impeccable quality and produced at peak performance.
Distortion / %
The signal-to-noise ratio signifies the technical
quality of the desired signal. The higher the SN the
better the transmission of the desired signal. An SN
>90 dB indicates that the amplifier is of premium
grade as, in this case, the desired signal passing
Frequency / Hz
The harmonic distortion factor (distortion) is a
measure of the unwanted distortions that occur
in originally sinusoidal alternating waveforms and
that are caused by the non-linear behaviour of a
device (amplifier - shaker). The lower the harmonic
distortion factor the higher the quality of the device processing the signal.
8
Thanks to the exceptionally low harmonic distortion
factor of <0.05% up to 100Hz and <0.5% up to 3kHz,
high-power test signals can be processed with utmost precision at extra low levels of distortion. As
a consequence, the amplified test signals can be
passed on to the High Power Shaker with pristine
quality, ensuring the best possible test results.
The signal-to-noise ratio measured with effective
values in the useful spectrum up to 3KHz, based
on the A-weighting curve, amounts to more than
95dB at a signal-to-noise bandwidth of 250KHz.
Equally remarkable are the distortions measured
as an expression of the harmonic distortion factor
because the total of all harmonic waves ranging
up to 22KHz fall below 0.5% in relation to the respective fundamental frequency and do not even
exceed the limit of 0.05% when the generated signals are of a particular low frequency ranging up to
100KHz.
Consequently, the exceptionally low-noise and distortion-free output signal of the amplifier makes
the control of vibration systems employed for testing vehicles in the high engine power class almost
entirely noiseless, which is a paramount requirement when it comes to testing vehicles for disruptive noises at specific levels of excitement.
Moreover, the consistency of the values measured across the frequency range suggests that the
measuring results recorded during all types of vibration tests will be dependable.

Application in the real world
Climatic chamber & acoustic chamber
The shaker systems engineered by AKE-technologies are the ideal choice
for use in climatic and acoustic chamber. A host of vehicle manufacturers
have already put their trust in this system as it allows them to perform
simulations under various different conditions. This versatility guarantees
disruptive noise analyses that produce even more meaningful results.
10
Climatic chamber
Acoustic chamber
Its resistance to corrosion and environmental degradation make our shaker the system of choice for
applications in climatic chambers. Our actuators
are fit for continuous operation under any type
of environmental conditions. Even if operated 24
hours a day, our High Power Shakers will retain
their original condition along with their peak performance capability.
Boasting an exceptionally compact design, resulting in a remarkably small installation space, our
shaker will pare down the operating costs of your
climatic chamber as it shrinks down the space required for the chamber.
Another welcome benefit is that it helps keep the
initial construction cost comparatively low. Thanks
to our shakers’ resistance to climatic influences,
there is no need to embed the actuators in the
foundation or to perform civil engineering works.
Their suitability for tests under climatic and temperature conditions that range from -40°C to
+80°C promise analyses that will deliver meaningful results.
The need to carry out costly test drives during the
development phase is eliminated completely. Our
systems allow for the simulation of all types of
road and climatic conditions.
Acoustic test chambers enable the precise measurement and evaluation of noise emissions or disruptive noises by a combination of an outer noise
enclosure and a sound absorbing lining on the inside of the chamber.
Acoustic chambers consist of high-efficiency noise
cancelling wall and ceiling panels, high-quality
acoustic doors of customised dimensions, noiseless LED lighting, inlet and outlet silencers, integrated cable ducts and soundproof cable
passages.
The chambers can be equipped with wedge-type
and planar absorbers that are designed, respectively, for semi-anechoic and highly sound-absorbing acoustic test chambers.
We partner with TS-tech, as they have the capacity
to provide us with complete turn-key acoustic test
chambers. We discovered that their chambers create the environment our AKE systems need to perform disruptive noise tests with flawless results.
We are capable of providing our customers with a
one-stop solution: AKE shaker systems housed in
the acoustic chamber - this combination promises Buzz-Squeak and Rattle analyses that produce
results of particular significance.
Anti-friction coatings dispensed by
anti-friction coating systems
The application of anti-friction coatings with AFC systems made by AKE is
the safest and most effective way to avoid disruptive noises. A quiet interior with no disruptive noises is THE distinguishing quality feature in the
vehicle industry - a standard that is assured by our anti-friction coatings.
Anti-Friction Coating
Anti-Friction Coating
Anti-friction coatings are a proven means for preventing the stick-slip effect and, hence, disruptive
noises. They offer an easy and sustainable way to
stave off creaking and squeaking. The application
of the transparent dry lubricant is recommended
especially for hard plastics, e.g. for contact points
between ABS/PC, POM, PP or leather/foil.
Disruptive ambient noises brought about by the
stick-slip effect can be caused by the irregular
surface structure found in some combinations of
material. The application of AFC on this material
evens out the surface and counteracts the stickslip effect.
We provide AF-Coating systems that coat components with supreme efficiency. Modular workpiece
carrier systems allow for the treatment of different
components on one system.
The process-optimised coating process assisted
by fully automatic robot control ensures uniform,
reproducible quality and cost-effective production.
The integration into upstream and downstream
production lines is completely effortless.
Compared to other options, the application of anti-friction coating offers numerous benefits when
it comes to preventing disruptive noises. Completely colourless, the paint does not affect the
appearance of the vehicle interior in any way, as
it is applied with perfect accuracy at the contact
points by our high-precision dispensing systems.
What is more, the coating is fully resistant to temperature and dimensionally stable. Other materials will lose their effectiveness over time as they
change their shape or shift their position. Over the
course of the vehicle’s life these changes may deteriorate into unpleasant disruptive noises.
Dry lubricants offer a slew of possible applications
for which we, in collaboration with our customers
and partners, will always find the solution that
suits our customers best.
We have the know-how necessary to guarantee
perfect material compatibility and reduction of
friction and wear, as well as cleanliness and a long
service life.
11
Single AFC system
Our single anti-friction coating system is made up
of 12 workpiece carriers and one AFC robot. The
components placed in this machine are coated
from the bottom. Designed to prevent the socalled overspray phenomenon, an extraction system is fitted in the immediate area of the coating
process. This extraction system fitted on the unit is
connected to the hall extraction system. In another production step, the components are dried by
means of a circulating air system.
The insertion and removal section can be designed
as combined or standalone stations.
The AFC system is fitted with 2 paint containers.
One 2 litre container is located directly above the
robot. The paint is refilled automatically through a
10 litre paint container that is housed on the system's exterior. This arrangement ensures a constant supply of paint to the robot, effecting uniform application of the coating.
Incorporated into the system is a cleaning station
that is designed to clean the dispensing equipment. In concert with the flow control, the cleaning station ensures that the application process
produces a coating of flawless quality.
Dual AFC system
The operation of the dual AFC system engineered
by AKE follows the same principle as the single
system described above.
One major difference is that this system comes
with 2 robots. Another difference is that the work-
12
piece carriers are twice as large as the ones used
in the standard system. These design tweaks allow
for the production of larger quantities in the same
amount of running time.
AFC clip system
A special type of anti-friction system is the AFC
clip system.
This system allows for the integration of an additional assembly process that is designed for clips.
The system also subjects this assembly process to
a test. This procedure is used primarily during the
machining of door trims.
The clips are fed to the position where they are
incorporated into the door trims by a vibratory
feeder that is built into the system.
The AFC clip system is, furthermore, composed of
a handling robot that is designed to remove the
parts from an upstream system such as a die-cutting or riveting machine.
The components placed inside this special system
are painted from the top. The extraction system is
housed directly below this station and connected,
just as in all other AFC systems, to the hall extraction system.
Integrated into the clip system are 2 independent
shuttle systems including a component fixture.
This design brings about an optimisation of the
machining processes.
AFC rotary indexing table
The AFC rotary indexing table works in a similar
way to our single system.
This AFC system features four integrated workpiece carriers.
The singular design of this system, again, allows
for a combination with other assembly processes
such as the insertion of clips into door trims.

Disruptive noise prevention from A to Z
HPS Light
Our HPS Light is a shaker that has been specially
designed for micro components. Its unique construction makes mounting the components quick
and easy. The compact design of the HPS light
provides for ultimate mobility and usability. Sporting a diameter of merely 160 mm, our shaker ranks
among the smallest of its kind in the world.
Notwithstanding its diminutive size, our AKE shak-
er is the strongest actuator in its class. The power
transferred into the component is exceptionally
high and transmitted with maximum precision.
Meaningful analysis results are guaranteed.
The HPS Light, furthermore, sets itself apart by its
quick assembly and low energy consumption. The
system requires a 230 V, 50 Hz power connection.
Stick-slip analysis
The phenomenon where two materials, excited
by vibrations, do not move in sync, but slide over
each other in a cyclical sticking and slipping motion is referred to as the stick-slip effect. This phenomenon is widely regarded as the main cause of
disruptive noise generation in the vehicle interior.
Disruptive noises generated by the stick-slip effect
predominantly occur in places where parts made
of plastic, leather, rubber and glass come into contact and rub against each other.
Vehicle acoustic engineers are faced with the
challenge of tracking down points of contact
14
which foster the stick-slip effect at an early stage
in the development phase. To support engineers
in mastering this challenge, AKE-technologies offers a compact, mobile stick-slip test stand, which
allows them to perform an objective evaluation of
a broad range of material pairings. This test stand
comes standard with the option to continuously
adjust travel speed and downforce. The test results satisfy the requirements set forth in the VDA
230-206 standard and established by various automotive manufacturers.
The all-inclusive package by AKE
Noise Recording System
The Noise Recording System is used for recording and analysing disruptive noises. The software-based solution designed by AKE-technologies offers a way to perform a realistic analysis of
this data. All information can be reproduced and
compared as often as necessary. Structure-borne
noise or airborne noise can be accurately located
and subsequently be eliminated.
Inline Testing
Our shakers are not only suitable for installation as
external testing bays. One of the major advantages our systems offer over the competition is that
they can be incorporated directly into the production flow. This seamless integration is achieved by
arranging the actuators below the corresponding
production area and by testing the vehicles for
potentially disruptive noises during production or
immediately thereafter. Inline testing is optimised
for series production and delivers meaningful results for each vehicle under testing.
A principal advantage of this approach is that the
testing is always 100%. Before coming off the
conveyor belt, every vehicle is subjected to a test
for disruptive noises.
Our system is characterised by its automated
docking feature. As soon as it has reached its
proper position, the vehicle is put through a noise
analysis. The testing period is exceptionally brief,
and the system will display possible solutions immediately after performing a thorough analysis.

Ziegler-Instruments - expert knowledge serving as the perfect complement
Ziegler-Instruments’ mission statement:
“We think ahead! And assist our customers with
systems and engineering services in the field of
perceived quality, primarily in the area of vehicle
interiors.
We focus mainly on our customers’ perception of
sounds and noises. Squeaking and rattling noises
result in a dramatic degradation of perceived quality. Making use of CAD modelling, we eliminate critical contact points as early as the developing stage,
effectively avoiding any potential risk of disruptive
noises.
Supporting this approach are systems that have
been designed to test for material compatibility,
and, thereby, avoid the stick-slip phenomenon.
The stick-slip effect needs to be prevented as it is
largely responsible for the generation of undesirable disruptive noises. The SSP-04 was developed
specifically for the objective measurement and
evaluation of stick-slip phenomena. The SSP-04
satisfies the requirements of the VDA-230-206
standard and of numerous additional test specifications of brand-name OEMs.
Our cooperation with our partner AKE-technologies has enabled us to guarantee disruptive noise
prevention along the entire supply chain. For the
purpose of quality assurance, we perform tests for
disruptive noises using shakers designed for vehicles or components. The supply chain is rounded off
by special coating systems that apply anti-squeak
paint to the components in the vehicle interior.
As the leading service providers in the field of perceived quality, we and our partner AKE feel responsible for pushing the involved technologies to the
next level of development. We constantly strive to
find the most economically feasible technological
innovations and solutions. We operate globally and
owe our strength to the great wealth of our ideas.”
