Plagarism Policy

City Gateway Plagiarism Policy
Why?
At City Gateway we pride ourselves in enabling you to develop your knowledge and skills in order
prepare you for the workplace. To create a training environment that mirrors the professional
environments we are privileged in working with we have created the following policy. In order to
make the most of your time with us, we ask that you read and sign your agreement to this policy.
What is plagiarism?
“Plagiarism is consciously or unconsciously passing off the work of others as your own. In practice,
you are likely to be guilty of plagiarism if you fail to note the origin of any material which is not your
own original work. This does not mean that material you derive from research cannot be used in
your work, only that you must say where it has come from and who the original author was. It is
therefore important that, where your enquiry is dependent on the work of others, you
acknowledge the fact through a bibliography and, where appropriate, within the text or as a
footnote. It is your responsibility to avoid plagiarism and to take steps to ensure that all external
content is carefully recorded and acknowledged.”1
How is it monitored?
During your programme of learning you will be assessed both by your tutor and your assessor who
visits you in placement, if you are on an apprenticeship. Both will check your work randomly to
ensure it is your own work.
As you complete each unit of your qualification you are asked to sign a declaration on your
evidence record sheet that “evidence provided is all [your] own work” 2.
As part of the Quality Assurance process your portfolio of evidence will be sampled by the Internal
Verifier. Your evidence will be checked for plagiarism at this point and may be rejected for
submission to the exam board if plagiarism is found.
Consequences
If plagiarism is found by your Tutor, Assessor or the Internal Verifier you will be asked to re-do the
work you plagiarised and you will be expected to attend a meeting at City Gateway and this will be
communicated to your placement employer. Plagiarism will not be tolerated at any point of your
programme of learning. If further instances of plagiarism are found this will lead to a disciplinary
meeting and can ultimately result in termination of your participation in the course.

If you need to quote directly from a source then you should reference the work. You should also list
the source in your bibliography. Take a look at the following examples as a guide.
A direct quotation should be written inside speech marks: “I am quoting from an author.”
You then select References from the Ribbon at the top of Word, and select Insert Footnote. This
will add a small number at the end of your quotation and insert a number at the bottom of the
page. You then type in the name of the author, the name of the source (book, article, website), and
the year it was published.
Once you have finished producing your document, you should create a Bibliography. This is where
you list all the sources you have used.
